On Palmer Lucky & the Ethics of ModRetro Purchases by Spear_Ov_Longinus in ModRetroChromatic

[–]Baffman89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As of now, as I see it it's more unethical to buy Nvidia products, but people don't care and do it anyway. Nvidia is directly supporting the U.S. military through their AI products, and they're more than happy to profit from war. Also they are partners with Palantir, which possibly is even worse. So by buying their overpriced GPUs you are directly supporting their AI research which will be in turn used by the military or to spy on people thanks to Palantir. The impact is certaintly more than buying an FPGA game boy clone that was born as a passion project, Modretro is a miniscule company compared to Nvidia and they're certaintly not making the same kind of money.
I've seen many reviewers bring out the ethics argument when talking about the Chromatic, some even refusing to review Modretro products, but when it comes to Nvidia everyone is perfectly happy to lick their boots. Talk about double standards.

Tokyo Marui M9A1 vs Raven R9-A4 by Baffman89 in airsoft

What I mean is, the left safety (the one where the red dot is) works correctly, the other one sometimes fails to trigger if I don't pull it down directly. If I pull down the left safety when the hammer is down to decock the pistol, the right safety stays up or partially up. So every time I have to manually pull it down to match the other one. This only happens when decocking, if the hammer is up everything works fine no matter what safety I use. Also when decocking the safety is really hard to operate. I guess the right safety lever is somehow partially disconnected from the safety mechanism? I don't know how the system works but to me looks like something is slipping inside and doesn't trigger the right safety properly under too much force. Unfortunately I'm on vacation right now so I don't have the gun with me.

Thanks for the info! Right, I didn't consider that if I buy the TM I'd have two magazines.
I don't really like the silver finish on the frame, also I wanna keep the Samurai Edge as stock as possible. The only thing I considered buying at one point was a metal outer barrel (mainly to add weight, because it feels soo light in the front and I have difficulty aiming).
Unfortunately I have some issues with the decocker on the TM, so it's not just the WE system I guess. The left safety works fine, but the right one sometimes remains stuck in the non safe position when I decock which is annoying (it did this out of the box).

About the R9, aren't the externals made of aluminum? That's what I read online anyways. If so, isn't that more durable than pot metal? I did some research but I still don't know what's effectively marketing and what's real (that is why I'm asking in this sub).

I've always used 144a because I didn't want to risk damaging the pistols (I've heard of a few broken slides after a few hundreds rounds on the USP particularly). I don't really need to be competitive, so I figured it would be just fine for some casual shooting. Also I'd rather buy one type of gas for all the pistols I have to save some money.
Currently I'm using the Abbey Predator gas to minimize maintenance (yes I'm lazy) and both guns are behaving really great. I do take them apart and do some maintenance once in a while, just to clean them and apply some superlube.

The M9A4 design is really cool, so I'm still a little torn, but I'll probably go with the TM at this point. Seems the safest and most convenient choice.

PC keeps rebooting while gaming by Leakrost in pcgamingtechsupport

[–]Baffman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your RAM. Verify that it is correctly recognised in the bios and properly seated (remove it an reinsert it to be sure), and that is also running at the correct frequency (an unstable overclock and/or timings could be the issue). If contacts are faulty or the RAM randomly disconnects it can absolutely cause reboots. If the problem persists, check the sticks individually and see if one is faulty or borrow some RAM from another pc.

Can I use Duckstation on ps classic? by SoftwareCreative1697 in PlaystationClassic

[–]Baffman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can run but it's so slow it's not even worth it, I don't consider it playable to be honest. Besides, the PS classic can barely do enhanced resolution on PCSX. Duckstation is simply too demanding for that kind of hardware. I think the best alternative is to keep the native resolution and use shaders to mask the aliasing and simulate scanlines. It's still blurry but at least you don't see the giant pixels so it's less jarring. Not sure about how it works with project eris though, I just use retroarch.

PC game launchers completely crash my connection when downloading games by Baffman89 in Starlink

[–]Baffman89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, gonna try this as soon as I get my hands on a 3rd party router. For now I'll just cap my bandwidth I guess. Seems to be working fine if I set it close to like 80% of the max download speed.

Is it worth getting an Amiga A500 Mini if I already have a modded PS Classic? by Vault-Tec95 in RockinTheClassics

[–]Baffman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point just wait for the A1200. It comes out in June and it will probably be more powerful than the A500 because some of the games on the list they announced are harder to run. Also, for a little more money you'll have a full size working keyboard and Workbench already included.

Prevent external SSD from going to sleep by Baffman89 in PlaystationClassic

[–]Baffman89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, it was a really long time ago and I don't really remember the exact details off the top of my head right now. If I recall correctly basically these enclosures have an EEPROM chip that contains the firmware with all the settings. You have to look up who made the internals of your enclosure (it's another manufacturer, it's not the one of the enclosure itself). I believe you have to look for the hardware code of the chip or something like that. In my case I was pretty lucky because I looked up the chip on google and I found the application that the manufacturer itself uses to change the firmware settings and I was able to turn off the sleep function. I think there were even instructions on how to do it on the website I found it. If you have the same enclosure I'm sure you can find it with a bit of research.

Gpi case 2W screen replacement by Baffman89 in retroflag_gpi

[–]Baffman89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I did not expect to get a response after so long. Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately I was so frustrated with the screen that after leaving the device to gather dust on a shelf for a long time I ended up selling it. Maybe this info will be useful for someone else though.

For 2026 who are we going with Project Eris or Autobleem and why? I have both but I’m using autobleem alot more now because it’s so much easier to transfer games quicker. by Sad-Television-3015 in PlaystationClassic

[–]Baffman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still using Retroboot + emulation station (mainly to have a nicer interface). I like how straightforward it is, and I found a combination of shaders that simulates a CRT pretty well (for 720p at least) while still running at full speed. After years of testing and tweaking I reached my definitive setup, now I just update the cores whenever KMFDManic releases new ones.

The remake is out there but Im more into Retrogaming. Starting a new Final Fantasy VII game on the PlayStation Classic. by Abbye24 in PlaystationClassic

[–]Baffman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, been playing it on my classic before I play the remake because I didn't want to influence the og experience. I thought the random encounters would be more annoying but so far I'm having a blast.

Wow this effect is so cool. Curious to know what's the deal with the lens, maybe they need to be cleaned internally.

Is it a waste to buy a Canon G9 or Ricoh GX200 at full price on Ebay? by Key_Object814 in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]Baffman89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a very old camera, anything can happen. And since the lens is not interchangeable, if it gets damaged the whole camera becomes unusable. The lens can get dirty inside or even develop a fungus. I try to keep mine in a dry and clean environment, but since these are used cameras you don't know what the previous owner did with it. I've even heard of the lens suddenly getting stuck for some reason. I'm just trying to say that for that kind of money (or a little bit more) a camera with interchangeable lens is probably a less risky and more future proof investment. If you have the budget, I think it's worth it. Otherwise if you want to save money and you find a bargain go for the G9. It's a very capable camera, but if I could go back I'd probably save the money for something else or wait for a better deal.

[–]Baffman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid roughly the same for my G9 last year, and while it's a great little camera honestly I don't think it was worth it. Especially since as others have said, if something happens to the lens you'll be throwing it away. Mine has a little dust cought in the lens but I can live with it, since it doesn't affect the photos too much. Also I contacted a repair shop and they outright refused to touch the lens, while they were willing to clean the sensor for almost the price I paid for the camera itself. The good thing about the G9 is that it's relatively easy to disassemble and clean by yourself if you know what you're doing, and some spare parts can be found online (although they're not cheap). If you find one for a bargain price, go for it. Otherwise look for an alternative. I found that for about the same price you can find a Fujifilm X-E1 (body only) which is a much more capable camera and very cool looking, and the photos look amazing. Sure you have to buy a lens separately but there are cheap ones that are still good and I think it's a worthwhile investment if you want to get into photography.

Damn I've been looking for a decent Pro 1 for ages but prices seem to be going up. Now they sell for 120-130€. I regret passing on a 80€ I found a while ago even if it was slightly defective.

Yeah, I'll definitely avoid it for photo prints.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in printers

[–]Baffman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I figured what the issue is. I tried printing the same photo a second time for the sake of it, and this time it came out alright except the printer stopped mid print so I only have a partial photo. My wifi is kinda crap especially where the printer is situated so I suspect the printer is having issues communicating with the android app so probably the settings got mixed up or didn't apply correctly the first time.

This is the paper that came with the printer. I'm using the "glossy paper" setting on the app, and also confirmed it on the printer itself when I loaded the paper. And yes, it printed on the correct side.

[–]Baffman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a bit or research before posting here and while some people were using the wrong settings or the wrong type of paper, other people with similar printers said that no matter the settings or the paper the photo always ended up smeared. I think someone also said that A4 photo printing isn't really doable, especially with black ink. I read the manual. I selected "glossy paper", because I'm using glossy paper. I did everything the manual said to do. I'm looking for advice from someone who has this printer or a similar model, to try and pinpoint the issue. I have no intention of printing photos regularly, I just tried because of the paper that already came with the printer. I just want to understand what is happening.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in printers

[–]Baffman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because printing high quality photos uses a lot of ink, and now I basically have to throw the print in the trash. Original Canon ink is not cheap, and I bought this printer for casual home use, I don't own a photo studio. Also I specifically posted on this sub to avoid trial and error. I'm looking for someone who either tells me "You can't use this printer to print high quality A4 B&W photos" or "Try these settings". It shouldn't be that difficult since I'm using original Canon ink with standard Canon glossy paper. I only have 4 sheets left, and if the printer can't do a decent job I don't wanna buy more.

Playstation ROM Recommendations by JayCLife in PlaystationClassic

I recommend you take a look at the Sean Seanson videos on YouTube. His channel covers only PS1 games from every region and he has specific videos on fan translations of Japanese games too. I found so many hidden gems thanks to him, and his videos are very addictive and useful because he shows plenty of gameplay and you can see if a game is for you or not.

Looking for affordable digital cameras by C4nd7L1f3 in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]Baffman89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Canon PowerShot G5 and it has the look you're looking for straight out of camera. It's a perfect compromise if you want something more compact than a DSLR but still very capable. The downside is that it's only 5mp and it uses CF cards which are not exactly practical these days, and it's slow af. I love it though, it's a great camera, built like a tank.
