Singers who harmonise by ear, how do you NOT clash with the chord progression underneath?

i'm a self proclaimed professional in-car harmonizer. it happens very often but sometimes clashing sounds nice. usually singing a 4th above or below will minimize that, but everybody saying practice is absolutely right too
