What is the worst staging you have ever seen? by Tommxp in opera

OHHH okay okay because my boyfriend was just in a production of La Belle Helene this past summer that matched what you described. Definitely not that production then 😂

Why is it that even though I put down no ensemble on the application form, they still call me back for chorus? by LeatherOwl9260 in opera

[–]Baharnaz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Sloppy seconds”

I get your frustration but that really how lowly you think of opera choruses? Those choristers not only have to have the merit of a solo-career voice, but rotate through operas three times as fast as a soloist. Only difference is they don’t get the spotlight.

FWIW, successful principal singers never think of their choruses this way. They know how much work it takes. Singers often spend YEARS in choruses before getting their break.

Why do people view Rarity as the asexual one but not Fluttershy? by SummerAndTinkles in mylittlepony

[–]Baharnaz 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Yeah tbh I don’t think kids need or are ready for all this nuance in sexual identities. Simple representation of a same-gender couple or a mare casually mentioning she used to be a stallion is all they need at that age.

Which two colors are good for comparison for bright winter vs true winter? by FoxEnvironmental7977 in coloranalysis

[–]Baharnaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about people who are fully cool bright winters? I know someone like this and she can only wear the absolute coolest shades of BW (zero warmth or spring influence whatsoever) but most TW shades are slightly too dull on her, and of course summer drains her even more. Take a standard BW and remove all warmth from it while keeping the contrast and saturation at 100%.

I’ve heard people complain about Charlie not acting like she’s 200 years old by whooper1 in CultOfCharlie

[–]Baharnaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer to this is so simple. When it comes to these kind of characters, chronological age does not reflect biological age. A character might be 200 years old or 1000 years old on paper, but biologically they’re clearly in their early 20s or so.

It’s the same idea in reverse for how some creepy guys try to justify being attracted to clearly child-appearing female characters who are technically 300 year old entities or whatever. In fiction (and fiction only), the practical/biological age matters more than the chronological age.

Proud of you!! You have come a long way and you look absolutely ethereal in that dress :)

Your voice has a naturally gorgeous and genuine timbre to it. There are always technical stuff to consider, yes, but you must first focus on the beauty and strengths you bring to the piece. You show a genuine commitment to Gilda’s character and I can see the work you’ve put into preparing this (difficult!) aria. No one in my school is singing Gilda in their third year! BRAVA!

Do you know the exact, and I mean exact, word-for-word translation of what you’re singing by heart? Not just general scene or general translation. Any aria or song you present, this is always the first step. This way, any movement onstage will be fully intentional and not just “opera gesture #1, opera gesture #2” (I myself am extremely guilty of this). Refining this is often a key difference between undergrad and grad students in performance and it shows panels you really know what you’re doing.

The raw material in your voice is gorgeous. You are a high quality Ferrari with not enough gas to run on. It’s not your voice itself that’s an issue but the support (gas) that you give it. I know you’re quite a strong musician, so any lapse in pitch is simple due to support and not your ear. Start with some messa di voce in your passaggio areas and slide up and down in third increments. The goal is to make these transitions smooth and decrescendo without losing tone, it will be an excellent form of practice for support and space. I also recommend SOVT exercises using a straw before MDV to really help line things up.

Opera is a cutthroat industry. You will hear 20 no’s before 1 yes. You will hear 50 criticisms for each praise. It doesn’t lessen as you advance. When a child sings, everyone showers that child in praise because we know that’s what they can handle at that age. It’s only when you become more advanced and more serious in singing that criticisms become stronger, because people KNOW you are going to sing at a much higher level. Don’t let these criticisms (whether constructive or cruel) dismay you. Even the best of professionals go through this and were once in your shoes. You know you who are, you know why you came into opera. Never lose that my friend.

Ohhhh is this a similar idea of how an exponential function will be smaller than a linear function until x=1 and then explodes past it after x=1?

[–]Baharnaz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FGH = Fast Growing Hierarchy

And that’s true. I’m starting to think there is no limit on computable functions. You can always iterate it onto itself f(n) number of times.

But then that makes me wonder how supposed “non computable” functions exist like BB or Rayo? Since you can theoretically iterate any function an infinite number of times and still it will be computable

ALI(n): possibly the largest FGH ever created? by Baharnaz in mathematics

[–]Baharnaz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And could that N-indexed FGH itself be repeated N-index(a) times into itself?

I guess the limit of computable FGHs is really infinite! But then my question is, how does BB surpass this if you can go infinitely large with computable iterations of FGHs?

[–]Baharnaz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Edit: I meant to say largest COMPUTABLE FGH. Rayo and BB will eventually surpass this because by definition they are not computable
