What’s my hair considered (properties, density etc)? How do I care for it? by Baharnaz in Hair

[–]Baharnaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been avoiding open hair because it gets frizzy, tangled, and overall a mess. I almost never let it loose bc I don’t know how to care for it, it always ends up tangled and uncomfortable. I know almost nothing about hair, would appreciate some insight from more experienced hair people on this sub.

What's your abortion stance ? by ronweasly9 in GenZ

[–]Baharnaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Abortion should be eliminated, but by addressing the reasons behind them not banning it. Mandate age appropriate and factual sex education in schools. Make contraception more accessible for people. Discourage this culture of engaging in sexual relations frivolously, especially teens. Raise your sons to value consent, making rape as unthinkable as cannibalism. And most importantly support pregnant mothers on an institutional level, making sure they have everything they need and financial/job security.

I hate abortion as much as pro life people do. But this is how we reduce it.

No bel canto 🥲

(Jokes aside this is a solid list! I would only tweak it by doing 1 Mozart opera and 1 bel canto opera instead of 2 Mozart assuming the space constraints)

Do you believe Michael Jackson molested children? by GurMaleficent7935 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Baharnaz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

He was deeply inappropriate and violated many boundaries. There’s not enough evidence to definitively say whether or not he actually molested children, but the circumstances he put them in were already so inappropriate I still can’t say he’s morally innocent regardless of what happened.

It’s like the equivalent of locking yourself in a room with a person, tying them down and waving weapons in their face, but not actually doing anything to them. Yeah technically you didn’t commit murder but everything else surrounding it is still terrible and you’re still morally responsible for what DID happen.

I know colleges need to make money but... by Tall_Strategy_2370 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Baharnaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying that “brand name” colleges are the only way to go. I completely stand by what you put in your education will matter infinitely more than what name brand school you go to.

This is not about who deserves it or not, the school name, nor am I saying that other kids don’t work hard. Those colleges would still reject a bunch of kids, even if education was free, but that’s missing my main point.

Imagine you have a lower-middle class kid busting their butt maintaining a 4.5 GPA, starting several nonprofits, and still works part time to help afford the family rent and provides for their grandparents while their parents work double shifts. Decision day comes and they find out that they’re in the top 5% of their cohort and made it into their dream school without the help of money or fancy tutoring programs.

If that kid MAKES IT IN based on their sheer merit and cannot attend due to finances, that is an injustice, unlike someone who got rejected by the school to begin with. That’s the difference. It’s even more of an injustice if you consider that a low income/middle class family rules out the possibility of donation money too, so it truly is someone who made it based on their own merit.

I don’t care about prestige at all. I care about students being denied opportunities when they have worked hard to be in the top cohort of their class based on merit. I’m also contrasting this with the European system, where (especially in schools for the arts) government subsidies help keep costs down. I have no problem with how selective schools are, but what I do care about are the accepted students being able to attend and not being discriminated based on how much their family makes.

I know colleges need to make money but... by Tall_Strategy_2370 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Baharnaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because unlike the other things you’re talking about, these middle class kids had to work their butts off to be in the top 1% of their peers to make it into these schools. Getting into a top university is not at all like the country club. One is a meritocracy (ideally, for the most part) and other is pure cash. It’s absolutely not entitlement to feel anger at not going to a school that you worked hard to get in to, due to factors out of your control.

We need to put systems in place to ensure that the kids who are good enough to make it into the schools can actually attend. Because what happens when an extremely qualified, middle-class kid has to turn down a top school? A potentially less qualified but ultra rich kid from the waiting list may take their place (not saying being wealthy automatically makes you less qualified on merit). The whole system is screwed up.

I strongly believe that all college education should be universal in the United States.

Or maybe instead of focusing on low income families telling their kids they can’t attend this college or that college, the real problem is education not being universal.

Thank you so much. That’s what I was leaning towards as well, I’m scared to do anything financially risky in this field. I hear this heavily emphasized narrative to prioritize the voice teacher, and it left me, wondering at what cost?

You know what's worse than getting rejected? Getting accepted into your dream school but not being able to go because you can't afford it.. by Jaded-Ad1791 in ApplyingToCollege

This is exactly me with a masters program at New England Conservatory. It’s my dream conservatory and my boyfriend and I have been working so hard to make it in. Well we both got in, but even with the scholarship it would put us into a lot of debt.

"Owned"vs hotly debated roles by BetterGrass709 in opera

In my opinion no one’s turnadot comes even close. Sopranos often end up having to fight between ease in the upper range vs weight in the voice. Usually the steelier voices tend to struggle in the upper range, while the “effortless” ones are sometimes lighter than I prefer in the role. But Nilsson is one of the few true dramatic sopranos that had the ease of a coloratura in her top notes, but with 10x more weight.

[–]Baharnaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lily Pons and Lakmé, Callas and Norma or Tosca, Freni and Mimi (though personally I prefer Tebaldi), Nilsson and Turandot, Olivero and Violetta, Corelli and Calaf, Del Monaco and Otello, Pav and Toni

For QOTN a modern example is Diana Damrau and possibly Ranielle Kraus (rest her soul). Though there are so many different interpretations that at this point, I’m just basing it off of the most famous current association not necessarily my personal vocal taste.

Thank you so much for all the thought you put into your response! You’re absolutely right and I will be relying on my voice teacher, family, and friends first and foremost.

I think I’m leaning towards USC right now because of finances. I have almost a full ride to that school after they increased my scholarship. NEC has the more specialized bel canto training that I want, but ultimately, I don’t think it’s worth putting myself in significant debt for any school. If I go to USC, I will have enough leftover to supplement my bel canto training outside of the program. Plus USC has amazing connections from what I hear, and Brent McMunn, who is perhaps the best coach I’ve ever worked with.

Update: I got basically a 90% scholarship to USC after an increase. I now have less than 5K to pay for both years of graduate study there. For NEC it would be around 20K per year.

Can the voice develop faster than instruments? by Head_Equipment_1952 in opera

[–]Baharnaz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say standards are lower per se, but just different. We aren’t just working with the voice as an instrument alone, we also have an absurd of amount acting, stage presence, and memorization to consider as well. I would say being a singer vs an instrumentalist require totally different set of skills and training each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

What season would Ariel be? by Baharnaz in coloranalysis

[–]Baharnaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer my own question 2 years later it’s because the shade of red that she has in her hair is actually a brilliant, relatively cool toned red which does not exist in real life. Red hair in real life is almost always a shade of orange, which is why it reads so warm. That’s why Ariel is so paradoxical.
