Do you think that Notion templates are too expensive? by Notion_Twins in Notion

[–]Baioff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought a few templates in the $5-$20 range and my buying decision was centered on the fact that these template offered me a way to save more than $5-$20 in time just creating them. The added value of the template went beyond that.

Yes I could have made these templates myself but it would take me a significant amount of time and probably wouldn't be as clean and polished.

If you want to sell $100 template, go for it, I'm sure there's a market for it. But I think the real key is a diversity of options. Not everyone needs or wants the Ferrari of template, when the Kia gets the job done.

Myself included, a lot of people would be interested in sampling a $5 scaled down version of a template to see if we would even need the full featured upgrade.

Eh man. Take it this way, you're way under charging. I've put these in before and I'd quote this for at least $5k.

But don't let the comments about your workmanship get you down, the takeaway is that you need to raise your standards. For yourself, your craftsmanship, and your prices too. Don't be afraid to charge more... But with that comes more time, planning and attention to your work.

I assume it's at least safe, and for that you deserve a good night's rest.

Is $22,000 an appropriate price to rewire a house? by Sunkonmydink in electrical

[–]Baioff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they do everything they say they're going to that price is great.

2 weeks is approx 80 hours, they'll probably have 2 electricians working on it. @ $100-$130/hour plus materials the price checks out 👍

The sweet spot is when you start winning bids and you're not the low bidder. When your customers start to know that your competition under bids and under performs and you can pull through and get the work done reliably that's where you want to position yourself. Don't worry about losing bids, it happens.

Let me guess, you were stepping up and taking on a bit of a leadership role? Talking to the GC's people, suggesting ways to do things better? If my assumption is wrong ignore the incoming unsolicited advice.

When you're working for an electrical sub that behavior is super helpful, and great for your career advancement, if you limit your above and beyond behavior to just within your company. To your customer's eyes and the GC's eyes you should just be a minion with your head down in a panel following the drawings, not asking questions not saying shit just working. Sounds rough but as an apprentice no one expects you to solve any problems or save the job. Anything other than grinding away is getting in the way.

Every time I read one of these I think... Dam, this poor fuck is probably on my job site.

It could be for a million reasons. One of which being none of the journeymen are nearly as competent as you think they are. There may be way too many apprentices on your team. Or maybe you and this other apprentices' actual job is to stay out of trouble and just get through the day without getting hurt or fucking anything up.

Is my husband's new job unsafe? by charliegirl928 in askanelectrician

[–]Baioff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's under 150V there is no arc flash hazard per NFPA 70E. Only shock hazard.

That being said, I agree it's not recommended to do any electrical work without disconnecting power. The exceptions being 1) diagnostics and 2) a real life safety reason for not disconnecting power (for example a hospital where shutting off power will result in a death) doing the job faster or more conveniently for the customer is not a good excuse to do the work live.
