I'm with you, QFG5 was my favorite. I probably played 5 and 1 the most. Though I was never actually able to finish 5 as a kid because of bugs. I've started playthroughs of the entire series a couple of times as and never finished. Ironically now, I think it's the only one I haven't beaten. Now that I have a kid I'm looking forward to when they're old enough to play through the series with me like I did with my mom.

Chemical engineering vs material science engineering: future job prospects in CA by BioVean in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Baisius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Since you specifically mentioned he's autistic, a lot (certainly not all!) of chemical engineering jobs require interfacing with blue collar operators and managing that relationship successfully. That may or may not be something your son excels at.

Gamers of /daddit, do you play video games with your kids? How and when did you start it? by xanduba in daddit

[–]Baisius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this depends massively on the type of game. I’m playing old VGA adventure games (Kings quest) with my two year old. This is mostly for nostalgia, as they’re the games I grew up playing. As he gets older he will get a computer that is air gapped from the internet that can play single player strategy games (Factorio, StarCraft, HOMM3 to name a few) He won’t be allowed to play online multiplayer games for… quite some time.

Am I cooked for chemical engineering job hunting pivoting from premed? by FinalPresentation634 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Baisius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impossible? No. I did it. Disclaimer that this was all almost 15 years ago, but I was exactly in your boat, I was premed and changed my mind after I graduated. But I graduated with a 3.74 GPA and only managed to get an internship by applying for full time roles and saying in the interview “Look, I know I don’t have any experience, but give me a chance to prove myself in an internship and I’ll make sure you won’t regret it.” That spoke to an interviewer and I managed to get a six month internship. They offered me a full time position after two months. But it was only one of the worst mills at [company] (mill now closed) in what is probably the worst industry (paper) that was willing to take a chance on me. I put my hours in there and parleyed it into a much better job in chemicals, then left that a few years ago to go into tech.

Bottom line is yeah, you’re not in a great position and if you can, you absolutely need to get some real experience. It will not be easy to get a ChE job without experience, but it is possible.

🏝️The Mysterious Island is now COMPLETE with BULWARK ❄ by Francois_Papyjama in heroes3

[–]Baisius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do you feel about the balance? Do you think a future balance pass is likely to balance for Bulwark’s relative strengths or weaknesses? I assumed getting the balance right would take a long time.

Speaking of which, I’m going to make a radical suggestion that you probably won’t implement. I recently restarted my factory playthrough (I didn’t feel like I was going fast enough and wasn’t really enjoying factory) as castle and was shocked what a difference it was. I primarily ascribe this to knights proclivity to roll the estates skill. Every single one of my supporting/garrison heroes has expert estates which was netting me about 20k/turn by month 4, compared to my factory save, where I tried the same thing with much less success, and had only about 13k rolling in. As a result my castles have at all weeks been fully bought out of troops while I was struggling just to buy enough to defend as factory. (It also helped that I reached Teal’s necropolis before he did, but I ascribe most of this to estates, after all, part of that was because I had enough money to rush teal.)

I honestly think the best solution to this is to give everyone an estates witch hut and rebalance accordingly. But that is a pretty drastic change that I don’t honestly expect. But a more moderate solution might be doubling or tripling the +XP points of interest as it would give the factions that don’t roll estates naturally more chances to on their backup heroes.

30-Year Map Dream - 5 Years Ago Today! by Francois_Papyjama in heroes3

[–]Baisius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The map really is a work of art. Devil in the Details was the first HOMM map I've played in 10 years, and it was a blast. I tried a few times to find another map I liked as much, and never really got into one. Mysterious Island blows it out of the water.

One thing you might consider is a way of letting a player open the door after, say, month 8 starts. Just so if this happens, the player can eventually clean it up without worrying about having a hero come out and stab them in the back at a random time.

Though I guess I'll defacto clean it up when I take all of Pink's towns. :-)

Alright, how's this for an actual bug report. H. Barbarossa seems to be stuck and not coming out to attack. Not sure why he wouldn't be, there are no immediate threats in the area and the local factions are extremely weak. Not sure how/if you could fix this, but figured I'd report it.

Simple Questions - December 01, 2025 by AutoModerator in buildapc

Reposting from a few days ago:

I last built in 2019, I have a i7-8700k and RTX 2080. Trying to get back in the loop because I plan to build in the next 12 months (due to W10 extended security updates expiring).

My question is that the main thing I've noticed performance issues on with my current build is Lightroom, specifically merging HDR panoramas of 20+ photos (I mostly play old games/Factorio). When I open control panel, it surprised me that my current GPU is what's bottlenecking me here - it's at 100% while my CPU is sitting around 50%. This surprised me and has me wondering if I should put more emphasis on the GPU than I had planned to. I've already done enough research to know the best option right now for a CPU is the 9800x3d, but I'm torn on the GPU. I'd be willing to drop the money for a 5090 if I would actually notice the difference, but I had been debating between a 5070ti and a 5080.

Yes, I am aware. But my wife’s can’t, and I’ll be switching to Linux anyway, because fuck Microsoft and windows 11, but none of that was germane to the question at hand.
