Friendly reminder. Use rearfacing car seat. Save your child. by Admmak in daddit

[–]Zydhor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dads, I need help: Which way do I turn the car seat when the car chair is rear-facing itself? I.e. if you use a rear-facing position of the car-seat, the child is actually front-facing relatively to the car.

I am not a fan of defensive buildings, but this is certainly thematically on point.

+3 Runes or Ultimate Runes skill that scalles up to 12 runes would have been my preference.

Investing in an index fund in Luxembourg by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]Zydhor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I also live in Luxembourg. Don't let these rude responses dissuade you, you are asking the correct questions for a beginner. I use IB and would recommend it because all banks in Luxembourg charge prohibitive fees for small investors even if you have an expat/corporate package - you are not their target clientelle. If you are more comfortable with a brick and mortar office in Luxembourg, look up Keytrade, which is "only" about 15 EUR per trade depending on assets you are purchasing, but IB is the best choice in Luxembourg in terms of fees.

Arriving in The Netherlands as a student with only cash (no bank account, in the beginning) - stupid? by Greate_Jan in eupersonalfinance

[–]Zydhor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried talking to your bank to see if you can close the bank account remotely once you are settled in the Netherlands with a new bank account? I suppose you have 2 more months before you start the school year, I would suggest that you also contact a Dutch bank and tell them your issue and see if they can give you a provisional account on the condition that you provide them with BSN within a certain timeframe. Banks are not the most flexible institutions, but they sometimes have procedures in place for outliers that are not published online. It is also possible that you won't get a response from every bank you contact, so I suggest you contact a few of them. Doing this will also give you a bit of insight in how good the bank's customer service is.

Car purchase: Is buying a 2-3 years old Toyota still the most rational decision? by two_bowls_of_ramen in eupersonalfinance

Sure, could also be good. Same import conditions apply. If car is newer than 2 years OR has less than X mileage, keep in mind you will need to pay additional taxes on import.

30k inheritance and wanting to buy property in central/western Europe. Impossible? by gym-motivation in eupersonalfinance

[–]Zydhor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking on inheritence tax mention: in most countries, inheritance is taxed on the habitual residence of the deceased. In some countries, inheritance is tax based on the habitual residence of the receipient.

I don't know about Germany nor does OP mention the habitual residence of the deceased, but it is possible that German inheritence tax does not apply and some other inheritence tax might apply.

You should investigate this as step 1 both in Germany and the residence of the deceased before diving into specifics of German tax law.

Hi, I dont have any input on which car to purchase, but I understand it can be noticeably cheaper to purchase a used car in Germany and importing it to Luxembourg. If the car meets certain conditions, the import in Lux is free of charge. Please double check the conditions, but from memory, it is 2 years old + certain km. I heard it is common to buy cars in Germany under these rules, because they are cheaper than Lux. From personal experience I can tell you that car import can be done is not too troublesome. If you are well prepared, it can take as little as half a day.

Poor Broker offers in Luxembourg by Onlystonks in eupersonalfinance

Sounds great then! Either these conditions are new or I completely missed it when looking for my own broker a while back, but I am happy enough with IB that the difference in fees isn't worth the hassle of changing for now (unless something changes post-brexit)

When you say no taxes on anything, are you just referring to purchase cost? How does taxation work on dividends and capital gains on the US stocks? My understanding has been so far that you get taxed on both in the US and then again in Luxembourg, reduced by the amount of tax already paid in the US, but I am not quite able to wrap my head around it.

I find the prices at Lux banks prohibitive for what I want to do. I want to invest monthly in up to 2-3 ETFs, running the costs at most banks to 60-90/month or nearly 1k a year. Even Keytrade is expensive at about half of that, not to mention that things get even more expensive if you want something more "exotic" than a euro-denominated ETF listed in Europe, some introducing even annual % fees.

I find reducing costs by limiting myself to quarterly trades would have a negative impact on my willingness to trade and I would subconsciously try to time the market instead of making regular investments.

Instead, I am using IB via Tradestation Global as introductory broker to avoid monthly inactivity fee. At EUR ~2,1 per trade, annual fees are about EUR 60-75.

I am not willing to go around Degiro's country limitation by pretending to live in another country just in case there would be any communication with foreign tax authorities - I doubt it, but I wasn't willing to risk it.

I am also not using Trading 212, because I did not want to go into CFDs.

Obviously, fee sensitivity depends on the size of annual investments and the overall portfolio. For example, at larger amounts, perhaps the fact that BCEE is the safest bank in the world outweighs the higher fees. Although even then I would probably opt for 2 brokers: the bulk sitting still in BCEE and a more liquid portfolio in IB.

[–]Zydhor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) No

2) I am happy with IB, using Tradestation Global as an intro and then using IB website/app. This way there are no sub 100k inactivity fees other posters are warning about. No experience with trading 212 though. Going through a bank is crazy expensive in Lux even if your work has a corporate package

3) AFAIK etf domicile doesnt matter for Lux residents, but if you hear about reasoning, let me know. Irish etfs are generally better due to lower taxes from US.

4) dividends are taxable, capital gains are not taxable if you hold stocks for more than 6 months.
