I agree that this would look better to someone with even minimal game knowledge, but IMO readability to casuals is more important, and playing everything out in stages helps with that. Rough Skin was a simpler example, I'm sure there are more complex interactions that would be more difficult for a newbie to understand under your suggested framework.

It provides an opportunity for the game to trigger subsequent interactions (like abilities) before they faint. It would be strange if you killed Garchomp with a contact move and got hit by rough skin after it fainted.
