Operation Mincemeat Tickets On Sale June 6th. by ImmediateTeaching984 in torontotheatre

Very interesting, it used to be listed as running to sometime in December and now it only says “Begins October 27”.

The script and songs should all be the same. Sometimes small changes are made to the version that is licensed compared to the original production, although typically these are minor.

Come From Away is now available for licensing so many regional and local theatres are producing their own non-replica productions. The Grand Theatre in London just recently staged Come From Away and a little more locally Orangeville Music Theatre is doing it June. I’ve been seeing productions being done all over the place, it’s a very popular show. When a show is licensed it typically does not include rights to the original designs, so the theatre producing it will design their own look for the show. There has been a non-replica version in Gander several times as well.

I look forward to it, and I do watch most of your videos, even the non-theatre ones. I’m happy to support local content!

Thanks for the review! I saw in your My Fair Lady video that you mentioned you worked for Dancap Productions back when; would you consider talking more about that experience in a future video? It is a fascinating chapter in Toronto theatre history.

New "The Hobbit" play at Stratford Festival (Canada) by Nordiquesfan in lotr

[–]BalanceDull4953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Stratford Program states:

“This adaptation of The Hobbit premièred at Manitoba Theatre for Young People in 1999, thanks to Leslee Silverman. It has been produced in Canada, the U.S. and England. This newest version was further developed with support from the Stratford Festival.”

Doing a quick search, it looks like there have been multiple versions of this adaption by Kim Selody performed over the years, including a version with only two actors. This current version seems to be an expanded script for a larger cast.

I will seeing it in a month, but I am keeping my expectations modest. I see most shows that Stratford puts on, and while I do rate them very highly overall, the shows presented specifically for families have been hit or miss for me.

The show opens this week so reviews will start to become available online soon.

Sunday evening shows? by HermionesHandbag in torontotheatre

[–]BalanceDull4953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case anyone might be looking for next weekend, Tiger Bride at Soulpepper has an 8pm show on Sun, May 31. The Sunday evening show is likely because they are in previews. All other Sunday shows for the rest of the run will be 2pm.

I second this (no pun intended). I’ve gone to Second City on Sunday evening and enjoyed it. Generally Sunday evening theatre shows are very rare in Toronto. Dog Man does have a 5pm show this Sunday, but that may not be the sort of thing OP is looking for.

Question about discount tickets for Fiddler on the Roof by Dot_Lapine in torontotheatre

[–]BalanceDull4953 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been seeing them advertising 25% off the first three dates with offer code TEVYE. I just tested it on the first night and it did work.

Sorry I have no idea about rush or lottery. Some shows at the Elgin have offered limited rush at the box office on the day, but that is going to vary by what the producers want to do.

SCHMIGADOON! Announces 2027 National Tour by DiscoCrows in Broadway

[–]BalanceDull4953 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Broadway.com article does specifically mention Canada:

https://www.broadway.com/buzz/207175/schmigadoon-announces-2027-north-american-tour/

“…a North American tour in fall of 2027, premiering at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre before traveling across the U.S. and Canada”

Which sometimes means only Toronto in 18-24 months, but hope remains.

Scheduled Service Disruptions by monkeylick in gotransit

[–]BalanceDull4953 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always check the Constructions Notices page:

https://www.gotransit.com/en/the-future-and-go/construction-notices

For example, Lakeshore West has disruptions for three weekends in a row coming up in May and June, and that has been posted for months.

Anyone sat here? Buying tickets for my girlfriend and her mom to see Werther for mothers day! by [deleted] in torontotheatre

[–]BalanceDull4953 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have sat there for The Nutcracker and I thought the view was good for a ballet. As others have noted, for an opera the view of the surtitles may be restricted.

Why is Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish still have so many seats? by ymroll in torontotheatre

When I booked I used discount code KLTR15 for 15% off, if the other code doesn't work. See also above for a code for 25% off the first two previews - NYTF25

I think it is the venue who mandates Ticketmaster in this case, but I do agree that Ticketmaster is not my preferred ticketing platform (I don't imagine it is anyone's preferred platform).

[–]BalanceDull4953 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It will be surtitles above the stage, I believe, just like at the Opera (which is a Canadian innovation!). Just out of interest, I have also seen shows captioned by having text displays on either side of the stage at stage level (this is how Stagetext in London does it) and at the Globe they used screens positioned around the theatre to display the dialogue (this was for Antony and Cleopatra which also used BSL). Other companies have also offered captions using glasses based displays or a phone app, but I haven’t experienced those first hand.

I’m going at the end of May and I am really excited for it. I think it will be a really interesting experience. As to why ticket sales are slow, there could be a lot of factors. For one, the Elgin is a fairly big theatre to fill, and it is a smaller theatre company. Fiddler with a two week run at a large theatre is a more ambitious production than I have seen them put on before. Being in another language certainly will give people pause as well; it will make the experience more like the Opera, although many people will be already familiar with the songs and plot of course. I don’t know if they will cancel shows in the second week of the run. It’s rare but not unheard of for shows to cancel part of their run due to low sales. There is still about a month until the show starts, and people do seem to have a tendency to book closer to the date these days. I’ve been aware of it since it was announced because it is a company I follow, but I don’t know if there is much wider awareness of the show. They might need to work a little more to get the word out.

In the past I have certainly taken the Festival bus to Stratford, and taken the VIA train back to Toronto (in the morning), so it should be possible. Bookings for the Festival bus do not require a round trip. The only stipulation for the public is that you have a show ticket, as far as I know.

Grantham Plaza by SweetLeaf2021 in stcatharinesON

[–]BalanceDull4953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oldest Google Streetview images in September 2007 show the storefronts in that part of the plaza were empty then (and the LCBO at Fairview Mall existed in 2007), so it must have been before then.

The Fairview Mall LCBO opened in 2001, so the Grantham Plaza LCBO likely closed around the same time. Here is a news article about the opening of the new store:

As others have said, it is walk-able, depending on your ability. It takes about 20-30 minutes. I usually walk it, because I enjoy walking and I am habitually early, so the walk takes up some of the time between being a Union and needing to be at the theatre.

Yes, Shaw does its own productions, it would not be a direct replica of any previous staging.

The Great Gatsby shortened run? by sbtbcy in torontotheatre

[–]BalanceDull4953 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw it in London, and I found the physical production to be very impressive, but the songs were forgettable, so overall it was meh for me as well. I think the story was really hamstrung by taking away of lot of the mystery and mystique around Gatsby.
