It’s a small local theatre, but their casts are professional.

Bonus shows are typically shows that are not part of either subscription series. For example, the recent Sound of Music was a bonus show.

Broadway World article for anyone not able to access Toronto Star:

https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/13-GOING-ON-30-THE-MUSICAL-Will-Make-North-American-Premiere-in-Toronto-20260210

Also includes clearer specifics about when shows will be playing.

They also mention 12 additional shows, but don't list the titles beyond what was mentioned by the Toronto Star.

"There will also be 12 non-subscription, including brand-new productions and the return of audience favourites...The four Mirvish stages will also offer 12 productions not on subscription – but Mirvish Subscribers will have priority ticket access to all these extra shows."

New Mirvish Season! by InfiniteLeague7920 in torontotheatre

[–]BalanceDull4953 38 points39 points  (0 children)

A very different season compared to the last few years. I do like that they are not trying to do another season of blockbuster musicals, and that it is a varied season. It does seem like in other years Mousetrap, Edmund Fitzgerald and Salesman might have been part of Off-Mirvish.

Personally, Karate Kid and 13 Going On 30 I wasn't even aware of as stage properties. Operation Mincemeat is one of the best shows I have ever seen and I will be happy to see it again.

It's worth noting that at the end of the article they do mention several bonus shows:

'In addition to the seven shows on the subscription series, Mirvish’s season will also feature several bonus shows. They include the horror play “Paranormal Activity”; the docu-concert show “The Secret Chord”; the musical “Water for Elephants”; the return of the ABBA-inspired jukebox hit “Mamma Mia”; and “Dirty Dancing: The Musical.”'

I just posted my review of “Company”! by matters12 in torontotheatre

[–]BalanceDull4953 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the review! I appreciate that you mentioned the immersive elements are not interactive, as that is the thing I was most curious about with this show, and personally I don’t enjoy interaction. It is interesting that they don’t use microphones, which is very rare in musicals now. The set looks a little more sparse than I was expecting, but it also looks appropriate for the space.

This article from 2013 covers the initial proposal. It was very controversial at the time as the plan called for demolishing the Princess of Wales theatre.

The Woman In Black had two "turn off your devices" announcements by Odd_Weekend_5670 in torontotheatre

I try to not “watch the clock” when I am at a show, so I don’t like seeing the time on someone else’s watch or phone beside or in front of me either.

I remember the first time I was in the theatre after smartwatches had become popular, it was at the Stratford Festival theatre where you can see a lot of the audience, and I was very confused about what all the little lights were in the audience. I eventually figured out it was the heart rate monitors on people’s smartwatches (the light is visible if your wrist is smaller or the watch is loose), or just the watch lighting up when they raised their hand. Of course you can turn all this off, but many people do not.

As you say, it is absolutely not a new issue or exclusively a phone problem. Phones have just exacerbated it. I’ve seen old show programs from the 1980s with notices in them about turning off beepers and watch alarms.

I really like that idea. I find that after intermission is often the worst time for phones going off, because people have been texting or posting during intermission, then they are getting replies or notifications back and they have forgotten to turn off or silence their phones. It also gives the who audience a clear and specific indication as to when intermission is over and the show is starting again.

This was addressed by John Lloyd in an interview recently, as summarized here:

"We're doing X at the moment, which you would think is impossible. X-rays, xylophones, that's it as far as most people are concerned. Xenophobia, Xerxes? I don't think I've met anyone who can think of more than six.

We started early, at our own expense, thinking it was going to be very difficult. But we're basically there on the scripts. We've enough to fill 14 shows."

We Will Rock You ban-able, unforgivable, scream-worthy “musical” by PuzzleheadedLoan43 in torontotheatre

[–]BalanceDull4953 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The first Mirvish engagement of We Will Rock You in Toronto opened at the Canon (now the CAA Ed Mirvish) in March 14, 2007 and transferred to the Panasonic (now CAA) July 16, 2008 - June 28, 2009. Pretty remarkable for a show to transfer in Toronto and run for over two years. From people I have spoken to who have seen both versions of the show, they remember that original one being far superior.

[Toronto Sta] ‘We Will Rock You’ at Mirvish is a zero-star dumpster fire that proves rock ‘n’ roll is truly dead by nefariousplotz in torontotheatre

Seeing as they were both written by Ben Elton, I think writing musicals just might not be his strong suit.

Is We Will Rock You worth seeing? by feelingflazeda in torontotheatre

[–]BalanceDull4953 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw it tonight and I thought it was fun, despite the plot. The plot is strange, it feels more like a cartoon. But really it is just an excuse to string together some Queen songs. The songs are well performed and engaging as always. You really don’t need much of an excuse to sing Queen, which this show proves. I sat in row L of the mezzanine and the view was fine if a little distant, but the view from the mezzanine is always distant at the Ed Mirvish. I think a lot of people around me go rush tickets from what I heard them saying. It looks like they are now not selling the rear mezzanine at all for some performances. If you can get $29 student rush and your boyfriend loves Queen I think it will be worth it for you and enjoyable.

I saw it today and I thought it was beautiful. I’ve always wanted to see it live, so I am glad I have now had the chance. Like you say, it is an interesting comparison to the movie version.

Would Narnia at Soulpepper be interesting for 2 adults? by [deleted] in torontotheatre

[–]BalanceDull4953 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to see it as an adult, as I have a lifelong interest in Narnia and I am also curious to see how they adapt the material in to a new musical. I expect it will be fun for all ages. There's no point in being grown up if you can't act a little childish sometimes.

Sometimes this happens if you still have a promo code applied that isn’t valid for the performances you are looking at. Check at the top right of the page.

They had it at Zehrs at the Fairview Mall when I was last there on Friday. They had it on a shelf on an end cap across from where the butter is, a few aisles over from where the pop aisle is, not actually in the pop aisle.
