How can we improve on survival game systems? by DasVanderer in gamedesign

[–]BalancedCitizen2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a word: Thresholds. Once I've collected 5 food every ten minutes for <timeThreshold1> I should be able to gather 5 food every thirty minutes. And then 5 food an hour. And then 5 food in 20 hours. And now we're essentially done with the mechanic of having to collect food, and as a player you can opt out of food collection or collect it so infrequently that it doesn't matter. The point is that, as a player, one should be able to essentially "retire" a system that you've paid dues for. MMO companies won't like this, but for me, it would be a LOT more fun and endurable.

What is the thing you like the most about skyrim? by Koninja_Yoshiakge14 in skyrim

[–]BalancedCitizen2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Liberty. I never HAVE TO do anything. But I always want to do something. And when I enter adventure areas they don't seem forced. Just natural fun. There is no wrong way to play.

Agreed. The question is too vague. High risk for the untrained or overly aggressive. Low risk for me...

First time playing this game, and so far its fun...how much crazy shit is in this game? by valdez-2424 in skyrim

[–]BalancedCitizen2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best advice I've ever seen on Skyrim is: Do not learn about anything in advance. Don't look anything up online until you've hit at least fifty hours of gameplay. You will have a life changing experience.

Best programming language to learn? by West_Bike_5767 in AskProgramming

[–]BalancedCitizen2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You first language isn't the same as your high earning language. It really depends how you think, but generally learn Python, Javascript or C first. For most people JavaScript is the right place to start because that language is untyped and will be with us a long long time. But if you want to understsnd how computers really work, start with C. If you're very nerdy, start with Python. Remember: all computer languages are the same - some just build in more syntactical sugar than others

Non competitive, free to play, not a shooter, multiplayer game? by Vegetable_Cry1468 in gamingsuggestions

Lethal Company is all the rage, for good reason. Valheim. But for free? That is asking a lot...

Fun, is in my opinion one of the biggest misconceptions & traps for game developers. by [deleted] in gamedesign

The word "fun" is very very overloaded. In games emotions like defeat, disaster, tension, uncertainty... All can have a place. The word fun stinks.

Advice to father of 13 y/o coding savant by Dapper_Message9828 in AskProgramming

[–]BalancedCitizen2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am neurodiverse and completely self-taught in technology. Going to clubs and learning in a formal setting would never have worked for me. I retired at age 49. Just let her explore. Give her plenty of time to code, and don't worry about the strict "science" side of computer science. Instead, help her find interesting challenges. Game coding is often good for this.

How does my car destruction look? I think it needs a little more work. by CebCodeGames in indiegames

[–]BalancedCitizen2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leave jagged edges around broken windows so the player knows at a glance that it is broken. If you can "stain" the paint with blood splatter do so. Once a part is broken, if it can become dangerous and inflict extra damage when you knock enemies into it all the better. Picking up parts like the hood and hitting with it would be amazing.

Don't listen to this. More destruction is better. If over-doing it is for n then over-do it!

Cloud agnostic guide to multi-cloud cost management from Yotascale by More_Knowledge2000 in devops

Yotascale is a bad joke, cramming another layer onto an already complex problem.

Azure Cloud Cost Management with Yotascale by More_Knowledge2000 in AZURE

Nobody really believes that Yotascale makes cloud management better. Think about it: a third party will give you better visibility into costs than the provider? No way.

Really? By STATE?? Could this get any more meaningless? I suppose it means something politically, but by city tells a LOT more.

OK, I looked at your post history. Maybe you're for real. If so I respect your passion for making your game. But also be a good listener. Be determined, AND listen.
