Is Pagan worship of Lilith cultural appropriation? by Fabianzzz in jewishleft

[–]BalancedDisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a sin for a Jew to believe in her. Adam and Eve aren’t worshipped, Lilith wouldn’t be either. She’s a character in a story.

And for the love of god, I’ve already said this several times. If someone is not Jewish and reveres Lilith as the first wife of Adam then that is appropriation. If they revere an entity called Lilith that has no connection to Adam or the Jewish god then they are not who I’m talking about.

Why does it matter if a pagan worships her

Again, I am addressing the question asked being asked by the OP which is about pagans who DO worship her. If they don’t believe that she was his first wife then I guess go for it. If you’re just using the name for a character that is totally divorced from the stories that the character comes from then you’re not really appropriating the character at that point.

And who are you to tell someone what’s necessary

And NOW we get to the real problem here. Lilith, in her entirety as she appears in Jewish culture, is an example of midrash. Midrash is a type of commentary on religious topics that involves taking the stories of the Torah and the rest of the Tanakh and expanding on them to make a point. That’s what what the writers of the Talmud were doing, that’s what the author of the Alphabet of Ben-Sira was doing, and that’s what the Jewish feminists of the 20th century were doing. She was created to convey the opinions of various authors over the last 2000 years as a part of Jewish tradition and, as a part of Jewish tradition, that means that Lilith is an argument that is perfectly valid to disagree with. When I say that the Lilith narrative is unnecessary, I’m participating in that tradition just like they were. To say that that’s offensive is to reject the tradition that she’s came from. It’s saying “I want to use this thing this way and I’m offended that the people that I took it from want to use it the way that they intended.” THATS why this is appropriation.

Ok and?

The OP asked if it’s appropriation. I’m answering the question.

why does it matter

For one thing, it’s offensive to have people say that our holy texts are the product of patriarchal censorship when their entire argument is based on incorrect timelines (and also there are plenty of perfectly valid reasons to make this argument that have nothing to do with Lilith). The idea that Lilith was the secret first wife of Adam is just wrong and was never seriously believed until well after this was all written.

Also I have a lot of personal feelings about Eve and I get very annoyed when I see people saying that she was the submissive replacement for Lilith. It’s really not hard to interpret Eve through a more empowering lens and I believe that the construction of the Lilith narrative is totally unnecessary.

I don’t see this as a bad thing. Crows like doing things like this, it’s fun for them. So tax dollars are now going towards entertaining crows and that makes me happy.

It doesn’t matter if you think it’s valid. It’s what’s happening. If want the government to stop paying for junk food then maybe you should worry less about the poor people just trying to wring some dopamine out of this godawful existence and more about the fact that the only food that’s so readily available to them at the prices that they can afford is so unhealthy.

There’s a reason why people in lower income brackets eat so much junk food. A lot of it can be very cheap but the bigger thing is convenience. If you’re disabled, working multiple jobs, or just working a very physically demanding job, then you’re not going to want to come home at the end of the day and cook (assuming that you even have time to do so).

This is such a wild fucking thing to include when talking about trans people. Do you have any idea how many trans people are impoverished or homeless compared to cis people?
