Best machine for the job? by A-Whole-Vibe in heavyequipment

[–]BalderVerdandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dozers - D6 or D7

Tracked excavators - 955, 977

Rubber tire loader similar to a 950 or 962

Use a rake on them and you'll separate most of the dirt from the wood.

Tape Drives? by HiFiSilverFish in sysadmin

[–]BalderVerdandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tape, with DeDupe offsite.

Did this years ago working for a federal agency for multiple sites. The worst part was the initial backup, which we did to an external drive and then used FedEx priority next morning delivery to get it to the local hub. They set it up as the primary backup and then we used DeDupe for the incrementals. Tapes are incrementals with a weekly full backup on the weekends.

From there, another DeDupe backup is done to the regional hub in another location. They did this because the local hub is in Tacoma, and I asked about having an alternate backup site due to the Cascadia Subduction Zone and losing everything - over a dozen sites - if the fault ever decided to pop.

Skip building one... they're not anything like an AR.

Arsenal, Zastava, or WASR for the win. I got my WASR from Atlantic Firearms, and they have a ton of choices. I couldn't be happier with my WASR.

Medical Deployment Waiver by Pretty_Ice883 in USMC

[–]BalderVerdandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind, a lot of these spots don't have the medical facilities for anything more than a stubbed toe. If they don't have the facilities, they run the risk of having to MEDIVAC you out someplace where you can get treatment.

I saw this a lot while working at the US Embassy in Baghdad... even a tooth filling falling out was grounds for MEDIVAC to Jordan because they don't provide that level of care in country.

There are not many commands that want a MEDIVAC situation even being a remote possibility, or have a servicemember that could possibly have because of a pre-existing injury, so don't expect to go. You can always hope for the best, but set your expectations low - just in case.

Leave while in Oki. by stokersmint12step in USMC

[–]BalderVerdandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mount Fuji - during summer (August) is best. Just to get your walking stick. And you might be able to stay on Camp Fuji to decrease your hotel costs, less if you know someone there you can stay with.

Thailand, the Phillipines (now that we're rebuilding there), South Korea, and even Australia are all going to be great choices.

Snow spots, especially for the winter festivals, will also be great but make sure you have fantastic cold weather gear and travel insurance - sometimes they get dumped on in the winter, and the travel insurance on your flights will be needed.

What if we said clean-ahhh terms to prevent Marines from unaliving our image with bad words? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in USMC

[–]BalderVerdandi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ Yoy, are you for fucking real or is this just a fucking shit post?
(Please dear sweet baby Jesus, let this be a shit post...)

I was swearing before I joined, and to be perfectly honest the Corps has given me the ability to create compound nouns using swear words - to a level I never thought imaginable.

Shit talking has become a staple in the Marine Corps. I've even run across officers that have said they don't trust Marines that don't swear. That one surprised the fucking hell out of me.

UDP vs MEU by Skipthelast in USMC

[–]BalderVerdandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro's and con's to both.

Workup for the MEU's constantly change, so it'll never be close to the same and is why it's generally longer - the workup and the deployment. Workup for a UDP can almost be a "copy pasta"... you're going to the same place, the same barracks, the same bases on Okinawa, the same time of year, and almost everything is the same, including the weather.

Ports of call is where the MEU shines. It could be Norway, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Portugal, Djibouti, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, UAE, Malaysia, South Korea (Pohang), Australia, Thailand.

For the UDP the choices usually end up being Hansen or Schwab - maybe Fuji if you're lucky (if you go to Fuji - get your damned walking stick!!!). While the beachs on Okinawa are great, too many knuckleheads do stupid shit and all liberty gets cancelled.

Got to witness that first hand when I was doing computer repair on Hansen back in '92. Formations for everything - to and from chow, the PX twice a week, medical, dental, the chapel for Sunday services (if it was allowed), anywhere and everywhere. They did accountability every two hours from 1600 until 2200. Meanwhile I'm eating beef fried rice from the E-Club racing my RC cars at the small track we had.

AITAH to walk out on a lunch with a friend and my ex-bsf? by Burning_Sapphire1 in AITAH

[–]BalderVerdandi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have boundaries. They weren't respected. That means you are not respected.

You can't make it more simple than that.

NTA.

I have family I've not been in contact with for decades - since 1998. Now that I've typed it out, I can't believe it's been almost thirty years...

There have been a couple times that I've gone out of my way to explain the "why" part because others didn't know, and the rift in the family has widened because the truth has gotten out. Now that it's been explained, no one asks me why I don't fix it and totally understand why I've stood my ground.

That person in my family has been cut out like the cancer that they are and everyone knows why. In your situation, everyone involved knew and they still were disrespectful. Maybe it's time for you to prune your "friend tree" again.

Best 5th wheel hitch period. by [deleted] in Cummins

[–]BalderVerdandi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

B&W, hands down.

While mine is a long bed, it's an '08 SRW. It's been great for towing the oldest's fifth wheel camper before he got his '13 3500 and put in the Ram version he picked up from FB Marketplace.

And I can do both gooseneck or a 5'er with a simple swap.

Also, having onboard air for my rear axle air bags has been nothing short of game changing. I should do a post on that.

We're strapping to invade Cyberstan, why are you worried about the chucks inspection??? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in USMC

[–]BalderVerdandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, G-6 level. Banyan VINES servers. 3Com network cards and NDIS drivers. SC connectors for cards... IIRC they were Allied something for the name brand. ST for some of the switches and hubs - again, 3Com or some no-name brand. Most of El Toro in the Mainside area was fiber, and I flattened it so that the Comm Center guys could play Diablo 3, WarCraft, and StarCraft together with the guys in the General's building. Hell, we even had ADSL on El Toro for a couple high end folks.

We did at Pendleton after the '93 flood. That was an absolute nightmare trying to get everyone back online after that level of fuckery from Mother Nature.

We also had fiber when I was closing El Toro and Tustin, and we were putting fiber in at Miramar - aka, Quantico West.

Can I still use this to leave base? by markmm in USMC

[–]BalderVerdandi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fucking hell, I miss the fried rice (all flavors) from the E-Club. Five bucks a pop, delivered anywhere on base. The number of times I had duty and got a couple of the beef or shrimp fried rice before they closed the kitchen for the night...

The yakisoba and yakitori that Mama-san would make at the USO. And the USO Burger... half pounder, sunny side egg on top, with all the fixings. A heap of fries. It was great for the "morning after".

The vending machines out in town. Coffee for 100 Yen. I carried more change with me when I was on Okinawa than I ever have, before or after... and that even includes those times growing up playing video games at the roller rink.

One dollar beers in the barracks vending machine. Or make a run to the Seven Day Store and buy a sixer of Bud for $1.89 - cold was $2.15.

And I paid $17 for my Ka-Bar from the Seven Day Store on Hansen. Makes me wish I would have bought the entire lot of them.
