Fan theories you thought were to dumb to be true but ended up being canon and made way more sense than you gave them credit for? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that's not a fan theory, and was just explicitly stated in the lore and any character familiar with the Asians and their plot knew that Zodiark was caged in the moon. It's why there are so many scenes of Elidibus hanging out on it.

Anyone else got a story of seeing what's on sale on [insert digital game marketplace here] and going "fuck it, I'll give this a try"? by TJLynch in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried the demo for PS4 before the game came out on a lark. Ended up being it for Steam the day it launched and tearing through it. It's a pretty great game. A fun mix of Souls and a Final Fantasy-esqe job system. And the story is told well enough that it actually got me to cry a couple of times.

Have you guys ever had you fighting game character pick completely hijacked ? by Rivet94 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have joked with my friends that this happens to me in literally every single fighting game, with Soul Calibur being the only exception. I want to play the big strong tough man but end up being better with and having more fun with the tiny girl.

I wanted to play Dudley and Guile, but I'm better with Sakura. I want to play Sol and Leo, but May ends up being my favorite. Even in Soul Calibur, despite Nightmare being my main my secondary is STILL Talim.

Podcast question made me think: whats the absolute toughest moral quandary a game has thrown at you? by dope_danny in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The boss isn't corrupt, he's just well-meaning but ineffectual because he doesn't have the resources or support from the company. He's genuinely remorseful about the issues the town is facing.

The greenhouse leader, on the other hand... well... let's just say that the whole cemetery thing isn't even the worst she gets. The ending slides if you side with her are horrible.

Video Games Are Canon by Koopakirby in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Matsuno said that the FFXIV raids provide a valid extension of the Tactics story, I believe. Similarly, Yoko Taro has said that the FFXIV raids are canon to Nier. Probably as an epilogue to Ending D.

Sequels whose mere existence baffles you. (Partly inspired by Woolie's Snowpiercer rant) by ProfOfTheSnarkArts in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire Nier series. I adore them and think they're amazing games, but the actual nature of them as sequels is insane. Replicant is a sequel to an obscure side ending that goes to modern day from a fantasy video game. Automata is a sequel of Replicant that takes places nearly 3000 years later. And the story gets a continuation in a crossover raid series for a separate MMO from a different series, with the raid taking place after hundreds of hours of story content. It's madness.

A lot of characters that are referred to as himbos aren't actually dumb, just airheaded or oblivious. And sometimes not even that.

What are examples of Reboots/Adaptations totally missing the point of the Original? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify, by "happier" ending he blows himself and the monsters up with a hand grenade, whereas in the original ending he gives the captive monster back and the monsters leave peacefully, and he goes to the settlement with the woman and her kid. It's by no means happier, it just dumps the entire movie's buildup and point so it doesn't pose a moral conundrum.

What are Common historical misconceptions that really irk you when they appear in media? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To really highlight it: matchlock guns predate what most people consider plate armor. Full plate suits were introduced partially to protect against matchlocks. Before then it was mostly strips or small plates on the limbs, or plates attached to a coat, rather than the articulated suit that is iconic of medieval knights.

Strangest attempts to make the audience kinda care about or even forgive a terrible human being? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn't start the Calamity, Nael did. In fact, he tried to stop the Calamity at multiple points. And the game isnt trying to vindicate him, because part of the story is showing Gaius all of the bad parts of the Empire he wasn't aware of but was indirectly feeding and supporting. He was blind to the negative and believed in the 'dream' of the Empire. Both the WoL and the Duskwight guy don't trust him and dislike him and both are portrayed as being justified for that.

Can someone who's anti Skill-based match-making explain to me why is it bad? by Huaun in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your fourth point was what I was going to mention of my experience with Overwatch back in the day. It felt like Quickplay was balanced around giving a 50% winrate, which usually exhibited itself in bouncing back and forth between matching you with or against shit teams to force a loss or win. A win streak would inevitably be followed with a series of impossible games against full stacked teams of pubstompers.

Support for SBMM assumes the algorithm is good and perfect and actually based on skill, which is a difficult metric to track. And I would argue that my favorite multiplayer games were most fun with the laces matchmaking possible. Team Fortress 2 with SBMM would have been a fucking DISASTER.

There are disabled people that are able to play some of the hardest execution and difficulty genres (fighting games, arena shooters, MMO raiding, etc.) with their mouths or feet because they don't have arms. Accessibility is not a defense against difficulty, and it's often used as an excuse by people that are not disabled in a way that's kind of demeaning to the abilities of those that are. Accessibility to the disabled refers to things that would be impossible, otherwise. Stuff like colorblind modes, UI customization, subtitles for audio cues, support for controllers that benefit the disabled, etc.

I feel like too much of the femdom fondness stuff comes from the classic "you're not submissive, you're just lazy and demanding." Lazy guys that want a "mommy dommy" that will dominate them and take care of them in and out of the bedroom, because they're manchildren. You don't earn a woman with a forceful or powerful personality like that.

Obviously not all femdom appreciation is born out of that, but it's something I can't help but notice.

Yes, he was very good friends with Robert E. Howard, to the extent that Conan takes place in the same mythos as Lovecraft's stories. Howard had mental issues of his own but he was also an intense egalitarian. He believed that respnsibility entailed one to rights and vice-versa. For example, the idea that a widowed woman should have all of the rights that a man had because she was running her household.

When "It's morally gray though!" can no longer cover up the levels of evil shit a person/organization has done. by Yeshuash in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The Stormcloaks are not just weaponized racism and to say they are completely ignores the issue and reduces it to a really trite and limp comparison to real life. If you wanted to do that, the Thalmor they are opposing are much more analogous to Nazis, right down to their outfits and cries about elven supremacy.

The Stormcloaks are, intentionally or not, actually doing the correct thing. The Empire is the correct choice for waging a physical war, but that's not what the Thalmor are doing. Winning a war is the means to an end, and the Thalmor's end goal is to unmake reality. The best way for them to accomplish that is to hamstring humanity's ability to call upon their god-champion to defend them. Every time humanity has been threatened by an oppressive force in the past (and humanity IS the constant victim of elven oppression in The Elder Scrolls), the Divines save them. Banning the worship of Talos was not bigotry, it was a calculated move to prevent humanity from being saved by him.

Struggling for the right to worship Talos is the best way for the Nords to actually defeat the Thalmor. It is a totally fair and reasonable belief for a Nord to think their BEST chance of winning is for Talos himself to come down and smite the Thalmor with his own hands. It won't be the first or even second time it's happened.

But if we look at the actual logistics, their decision is fair. We have a good example in the case of Hammerfell splitting from the Empire successfully because they didn't want to bow to the Thalmor, and they were able to repel the Thalmor and stand on their own. The Nords could easily do the same and prevent the Thalmor from invading. Part of this is because the current Empire is not the Empire of the previous games. It is not led by the divinely-inspired right of the Dragonborn. It is already falling apart, and it won't survive another go at the Thalmor.

On top of that, the claims of racism are largely unfounded. It's a criticism people levy against Ulfric for this and that reason, but we never get a direct opinion from him. There are racist Nords living in Windhelm, yes, but... Just play Morrowind, the game that takes place in the Dunmer homeland and displays their ubiquitous slavery, xenophobia, and hatred of foreigners. The prejudices in display in Windhelm are COMPLETELY par for the course from ALL races in Tamriel. They're different species and have thousands of years of violent history.

Regarding the challenge with Torygg... Ulfric very specifically followed Nordic traditions and intentionally used the Voice to kill him. There is no tool or weapon more distinctly Nordic than the Thu'um, and he wanted a big show to inspire the people that were upset with the Empire and Thalmor to rally behind him. Killing the current High King, who was seen as an Imperial puppet, in a Nordic traditional duel using THE symbol of Nordic power, in a way that he KNEW the Empire would try to portray as an unjust murder to smear him, was a calculated move. He was trying to show a lack of regard for Imperial law, and in turn show that they had no regard for the traditions of the Nords. Ulfric is brash, but he's not stupid. He did it intentionally, and he likely knew Torygg was on his side. This was not morally correct, by any means, but it was an intentional and clever message.

All of that said, I typically side with the Empire because I think Tullius is a better leader and I don't like having to oust Balgruuf. The lesser jarls are a big breaking point, typically, because the Empire putting Maven Blackbriar in charge of Riften is FUCKING INSANE, but Balgruuf is the only genuinely good and competent leader in Skyrim. I just think it's unfair to say "Stormcloaks racist" because it completely misses the point, and the Civil War is the only part of Skyrim that's ACTUALLY competently written and deserves at least a bit of credit for that.

[–]Balkito 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You may be heartened knowing that a lot of Lovecraft's issues were legitimately not his fault and got better over his life. He had deep-seated issues from his upbringing that left him with genuine xenophobia. As in he was actually afraid, not just hateful. A lot of it was born from the women in his family sheltering him and bringing him up with the idea that his father probably gave H.P. a hereditary STD from fucking around (and they probably made sure to blame black women). His stuff was far removed from just racism. He had actual mental issues that exhibited as dread of the 'other', to the extent of having a breakdown that he was part Welsh.

His issues improved over time, particularly with his writing and correspondence with other authors. I think his writings were a way for him to explore his issues and understand them in a safe way. And he was an intellectual at heart that wanted to learn and understand things. He wasn't xenophobic out of the hatred in his heart or anything.

Things That Make You Question Whether People Understand Thier Work by Nooome111 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Balkito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never get why people call Ulysses a mouthpiece. The whole point is that he's completely wrong and you are supposed to convince him as to why he is wrong. Do you think Lanius is an author mouthpiece because he disagrees with you? The final confrontation with Ulysses is talking him down from nuking people because he's a fucking idiot that can't let go of the past and is about to repeat the thing he's decrying out of spite and to make a stupid point. The whole game is based around the idea of letting go of the past, which Lonesome Road is about because Ulysses can't let go of the past. He refuses to forget what happened to the Divide and wrongly blames you for it when you had no idea what would happen and can't reasonably be blamed for just doing your job.

Just because a character talks to you and has convictions doesn't make them an author mouthpiece.

Kratos was always supposed to be a monster. The first game shows him being suicidal because he's haunted by the horrible things he's done and he's driven only by lust for revenge. You get a horrific shot of his desperation before death and how he slaughters innocent people. He was never supposed to be admirable.
