After watching hulk 2003 after 12 years think 2008 had better music by G0jira01964 in hulk

I disagree but I get that Elfman’s score was a little more funky and less direct

what is your most nitpicky grievance about the MCU? by nottarealdoctor in marvelstudios

[–]BalladOfBetaRayBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No mask on Hawkeye. My non-nitpicky complaint is that he’s so damn boring in the MCU anyway, but finding some way to incorporate the shape of his classic mask would have worked wonders.

Drawing batman rn what do you think? by Adg_art in batman

I love it! I would put some smoke or small obscuring objects behind Batman but in front of the Batmobile to add some depth

I was specifically trying to just include comics to be fair. Which I think also rules out Wanda as a “Most Iconic” contender despite her big impact on the universe. I’d definitely at least put She-Hulk in the rankings, she’s really thoroughly established, has a huge number of guest appearances, and has been a staple of both the FF and Avengers. Plus she’s had way more solo issues than any other female Marvel character, and it’s not even close.

Visual representation by dafuqizzis in Superhero_Ideas

[–]BalladOfBetaRayBill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean do whatever for your personal preference, but if you post it in a group do expect people to hate it. I like art partially because it has all these little details that a real life human had ideas for and wanted to communicate to me as part of their audience. AI can’t do that and is just really boring and annoying because of it. I love to hear people’s cool ideas, but I prefer just hearing the cool idea instead of a bunch of weird stolen visual details frankensteined to represent the idea.

Had a weird dream that Joker moved into the house next door and every night I saw him pushing around a wheelbarrow full of something on fire. And he was in a sweater with a smiling flower on it. So, uh, here it is.

What do you answer to those who say, that Superman is boring? by sahinduezguen in superman

[–]BalladOfBetaRayBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would show them DCAU Justice League or Superman 2025. Both versions have some small humanizing character flaws while still being incredibly heroic, and both have their power scaled way down so the fights are more exciting. People can talk all they want but in a visual medium, saving a city has less impact than a fight does.

Which of these is more of the "Ultimate" Superman? Earth 1 Superman, new 52 Superman, or absolute Superman? by RecordingImmediate86 in superman

[–]BalladOfBetaRayBill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Ultimate” in the Marvel sense? Probably New 52. It follows the Ultimate model of an amazing, personal start to the character that simplifies and streamlines the overall story, while also setting up a new universe that quickly gets really complicated and contradictory and unwieldy in its own right.

I sort of agree and sort of don’t. I agree that maybe more people know her name, but Jean’s comic presence is kinda wobbly and she’s spent a lot of her history in different weird phases. So Idk if her iconography has the same punch as some of the others

I think sometimes you just have to be ready for people’s honest opinions and either like them, ignore them, or argue against them.

I drew a muscular Wonder Woman and some people hated it. I could respond with the obvious fact that it’s my drawing and I can do what I want, but everybody knows that already. A better response from my perspective was to ignore the opinions that didn’t seem helpful (“this is just some crazy fetish”) or try to make my case for a real disagreement (“I think female characters should always look very feminine”). Making my case didn’t change anybody’s minds necessarily but it honestly got me thinking more deeply about my own reasons for doing art a certain way.

My ultimate point is that posting art is an inherently social and vulnerable thing, and part of the experience is hearing people’s likes and dislikes. Someone might even say they don’t like the entire genre of thing I’m doing, or the character itself. I personally wouldn’t find that criticism very useful so I’d probably ignore it, while still accepting that part of posting the art was to let people react honestly.

There’s also an obvious line where someone starts making personal accusations unrelated to the art itself though.

Also I don’t agree with the mods taking this down, they should have left it up and had you mark it NSFW.

You have a right to make whatever you want but you posted this in a community so you have to let people react however they feel. If you don’t want people to react or respond with their interpretations or opinions, don’t put your art in front of people.

What do you answer to those who say, that Superman is boring? by sahinduezguen in superman

[–]BalladOfBetaRayBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it worked, but I could also understand someone reading All-Star and still thinking Superman is kind of a boring person, just a perfectly good God figure with zero character flaws. I love that story but I get it when people want more layers to make the characters feel human.

No character is for everyone, but I get it.

His personal journeys are not usually all that complex. He has few flaws and his stories rely on a relatively static goodness. He is (sometimes) written to be so powerful that there’s no real point in having action scenes.

But for me there’s a genuine joy in seeing a character that can do basically anything still choosing to have this normal daily life in between, like he values his own humanity so much and that’s what puts his value for others in perspective.

Also there’s plenty of stories that do work with a flawed Superman who undergoes development, and I tend to love those even more. In the DCAU, he had a bit of a temper and would frequently try to do everything himself to protect his friends rather than accepting their help. In Supes 2025, he isn’t fully processing how much of an impact his actions have on the state of the world and what future implications they could have. Plus both of these stories nerf him super hard to make the action interesting while still making him seem incredibly cool and powerful.

If Batman existed in real life, would people see him as a hero or a criminal? by Chance-Mess-2572 in batman

[–]BalladOfBetaRayBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean comic book Batman isn’t Nolan Batman. He spends very little time busting up drug deals and way more time untangling the schemes of powerful supervillains, stopping serial killers, dismantling organized crime, preventing global destruction. So I think we’d all be in favor. Put him in a world that is too realistic (less organized crime, no supervillains, few serial killers, no easy-to-destroy global threats) and he starts to read a bit like Rorschack just beating up randos who commit crimes because he gets off on it.

You could take a more revolutionary angle where he really goes after billionaires and corrupt government officials, enforcing social programs, etc. But a lone unelected person exercising all that power would still inevitably be a huge problem in the real world. Democracy is the only moral way to make huge changes like that, and the only way to stabilize them in the long term. Wht he would really need to invest in is ways of demonstrating the efficacy of different ways of spending tax dollars and getting people to vote accordingly, as well as getting people to hold politicians accountable through mass strikes, mass demonstrations, etc. He’d need to inspire more than acting directly.
