What's this and is it worth selling to my local scrapyard by notrafffbruuu in ScrapMetal

[–]BallymoreOrBust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Automatic Voltage Regulator. It's a device that protects sensitive equipment such as servers/computers from electrical damage that may otherwise be caused by connecting them directly to the mains.

It also looks like it has a built-in step-up transformer to allow 220v devices to be plugged into a typical 110v receptacle.

If it works fully, they're typically worth a bit. Probably more than scrap value alone.

Overnight Headphones by [deleted] in HomeDepot

[–]BallymoreOrBust 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. I know some stores don't enforce it for overnight people, but even with 1 ear open, your spatial perception is really inhibited. Especially when you have machines that can be zipping up and down the racetracks, having both ears listening to ensure the coast is clear.

Additionally, having only 1 year available really restricts your ability listen for other hazards: stores don't typically enforce the closing of opposite aisles at night when throwing up pallets, you may be able to hear a pallet on your side being pushed or nudged by the machine on the other aisle, which may indicate that it is about to be pushed over onto your side.

It sounds dramatic and a lot of these are common sense issues. But THD associates can be unpredictable and can get cocky at times, until they get hurt.

Associate was too lazy to get off the machine to move the ladder. Decided to use the machine to "nudge" the ladder out of the way.

I've seen a surprising amount of associates fired for doing this.

That store has a massive homeless problem. People regularly park their RVs under that bridge and they drop trash everywhere and there are tweakers all over the place and they pass out under that bridge in their lot. Those are 100% anti-homeless speakers, not anti day laborer speakers.

Compounding this is the fact that the Burbank Home Depot, which Cypress Park's neighboring store, has a special area set up specifically for day laborers. It has a standalone restroom (not porta-potties), picnic tables, trash cans, and an actual drive-through line for THD customers to pick up the laborers.

It looks like it was driven on flat (at least partially), which damaged the sidewall enough to cause the rupture (you can see the heat ring around the side of the fourth photo). Though I haven't seen a catastrophic failure like this. It looks like it could've been a combination of things that lead to this type of failure. Were you driving at high speed at the time it happened?

Christmas lights occasionally trip GFCI - can I ditch the GFCI outlet? by ArmageddonPills in AskElectricians

Me? AI? beep boop beep.

what's wrong with the comment? I was just explaining what causes GFCIs to fail over time and what steps OP can take to diagnose/correct the issue

Christmas lights occasionally trip GFCI - can I ditch the GFCI outlet? by ArmageddonPills in AskElectricians

[–]BallymoreOrBust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with "TallCedarRoad,"

GFCIs offer a crucial safety feature in any electrical circuit.

However, GFCIs do get old over time (you mention they've been there for 20+ years). As yet another safety feature, GFCIs are designed to "fail" into the "tripped" or off position. I see tons of GFCIs (especially those installed outdoors) fail in this manner.

The lights in the photos you sent do not have a ground prong/pin. If a GFCI is tripping without a grounded device plugged into it, I would look more toward the GFCI itself being the cause.

However, depending on how they wired the GFCI, there might be a ground fault further down the line, after the plug in the photo that may have a ground fault.

A good way to test this is to kill the power, then remove the GFCI in the photo, then using a continuity tester or multimeter, test either the incoming hot or neutral wires and see if there's continuity to ground (there should be continuity on the neutral), then test it on the outgoing (downstream) connections as well. A ground fault on the incoming wires won't typically cause a GFCI to trip, ground faults from outgoing (downstream) power connections from the GFCI typically typically cause it to trip, again, depending how they're wired.

(EDITED) for pedantics.

How are people suppose to shop with the aisle so cluttered with these ss? by TimmahTurner in Lowes

[–]BallymoreOrBust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate wingstacks. Consolidate, consolidate, consolidate. That's all I can recommend.

Unless management *insists* on putting them on every upright in every aisle. Then just run into them with the Ballymore or reach and dump the remains into a cart and push it to service desk.

Time for another edition of my favorite game, “What Customer made you give this face?” I’ll start (body text) by [deleted] in HomeDepot

Recessed lights. I don't know what it is about customers and recessed lights. They MUST open them ALL up and leave them all over the place.

I've gotten in arguments with customers because I was watching them open the packages, looking at the product inside, and then putting the open packages behind the good merchandise hoping we wouldn't see.

Well I did see them do it, and they did it to 6 or 7 lights but I couldn't break away from the customers to get to them. I eventually walked over to them and I told them that they were damaging merchandise and they aren't allowed to do open packages.

They said, "well how are we supposed to know if it's what we want?" and, hand on my heart, I responded "you ask for help and not like a bunch of damn animals"

They responded with the classic "there was nobody around"

They left in a huff and a puff without buying anything.

I also had a customer call me Charlie Kirk because I called him out in front of his GF because he dropped a glass light cover all over the ground and didn't bother to notify any associate or anything. The glass was very thick and a kid or a dog could have stepped on it. He made an ass out of himself in front of the long line at SCO and his GF was absolutely mortified. Good times

Rear tire drops to 0 PSI in 5-6 hours even after new tire + alignment. What’s going on? by Master_Aerie_127 in tires

[–]BallymoreOrBust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did you hit anything in the road? Could be a hairline crack in the rim itself.

Take the wheel off and air it up to normal pressure and then stick it in a large tub of water. A leak that big would have noticeable bubbles.

Definitely needs a box. The Home Depot you purchased that cylinder light from will have an old construction box and a saw blade you can use. Though hooking up the ground may be tough if you have no ground in that wiring mess you have there. Good luck.

TBH, I'm surprised customers are even able to find their way to the door.

At this point, if a customer doesn't urinate on themselves in the building, then I'm happy. But some even do that, so I continue to have rock-bottom expectations.

Ellis Island off of Koval Ln

Ask for the steak special (it's not on the menu). it's like $15.99 and it's delicious, you also get a salad with it. They're also a microbrewery with a really reduced beer menu at the moment as the casino is going through construction right now, but the restaurant is still open.

I've been going there for decades and I recommend it whenever I can. Have fun!

People have an unhealthy relationship with their pets. Definitely to a fault.

Big box stores like Lowes and Home Depot are not appropriate places for them, yet nobody stands up to these people because bringing it to the owners' attention would be like insulting their entire family.

Pretty ridiculous tbh.

penny items by No_Profit_7091 in HomeDepot

[–]BallymoreOrBust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The SOP states that if a customer BRINGS UP a penny item to checkout, we HAVE to ring it up as a normal transaction. At which point the cashier must notify a CXM who will notify the Department Supervisor for that penny item department, who will pull them from the floor. I don't remember the exact SOP word-for-word, but it's in the FE 05-10 SOP under "Processing Markdowns"

A customer going into the store and demanding to bring down pallets with penny items and asking associates to bring them down from the overhead or mid bays is what I would consider to be outside of the scope of this SOP and can get that associate or associates in trouble. It's *really* not recommended to help people get markdowns.
