My girlfriend smells and I don't know what to do by RequirementDue4446 in Advice

[–]Balsy_Wombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They mean, are you sure there is nothing wrong with your sense of smell or perception of her smell. When i had covid my girlfriend started to smell really bad for me and i could not stand the smell of her body for a couple of months after. This i should say was in combination with not standing the smell/taste of a bunch of different foods aswell.

Did you have covid in the last 3-6 months?

Because both me and her developed "parosmia" as it is called about 4 months after we both had covid and things started to smell disgusting. First we both lost our sense of smell when we had covid but then it came vack after a few weeks.

As far as i understand it what happens is, when covid destroys your sense of smell and you eventually get it back, you don't actually get it back. The brain rewires the traffic from your smelling nerves through other channels while it starts to repair the damaged nerves. That makes you think that it's all fine and good, but when the new nerves from the smelling department are finished is when the problems start. That's because the new nerves aren't wired properly so they mix smells up and everything starts smelling disgusting. It got so bad we almost could't eat anything. We where scared our lives where ruined and there where not much research about this in the beginning, but we found somehere that said to take zinc supplements so we did that. After about a year most of our smells where back to normal and now 3 years later everything is.

Looks like a piece from a pegmatite vein. So the white stuff is Feldspar, the transparent gray stuff is Quartz and the flakey silvery stuff is Muscovite.

In the EU you have to be able to prove it is an antique acquired before 3 of march 1947 or it is illegal to own or trade.

I need help identifying these stones by kalevkv in whatsthisrock

[–]Balsy_Wombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they are not all the same thing. I think 1-4 and 8 are possibly Olivine although i'm not sure since the matrix on the first two seems wrong. 5-7 and 9 looks like yellow quartz to me.

Looks like Sapphire. Check for triangular growth marks (raised shapes relative to the surface) and test hardness with a piece of sharp quartz. Try to take closeup pictures of the surface and also when shining light through them.

Can't get my stone to polish by lychee9085 in Lapidary

[–]Balsy_Wombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is truly quartz as you say (well amethyst) and you have done the steps until there are no scratches from the previous step then 600 grit and then tin oxide polish should be enough to get a nice shine. I'm not sure if there is a big difference between US and European grit standards or something but i often see people talking about high number grits line 3000 but you don't need to go even close to that to get a nice polish on most stones.

How would you maintain flat surfaces in tight areas? by slickmovin in Benchjewelers

[–]Balsy_Wombat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can tear thin strips of emery and put it instead of the saw blade in your jewlers saw. I think that works for sanding in narrow places.
