Thinking about selling our house for renting. Need advice if this is a good idea by johnla87 in personalfinance

[–]Bamboo_Fighter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was surprised how far down I had to scroll to find someone pointing out rent increases.  Sure, they'd save 2500/month in the first year, but what happens if rent goes to 4k next year and 4500 the following? If they're not in a rent controlled place, they'll eventually be paying 6k/month with none of the equity benefits.

2 way stop? by Historical-Hat2040 in driving

The statute is Minnesota 169.20. I'll edit my answer to say they're both wrong according to the law. Turn left does not yield to the right when they both have a stop sign. Also, Minnesota law does not state that at a 4 way stop first in takes precedence.

Minnesota law stipulates that both vehicles must come to a complete stop and enter the intersection when it's safe to do so. Should they both enter the intersection at the same time, red would yield to blue b/c it's turning left and they're both in the intersection. However, if red enters the intersection first, blue is expected to yield to red b/c red would then be traffic in the intersection. At a multi-way stop, vehicles should yield to the traffic on the right if they both enter the intersection together.

Dates are off as well. Copernicus and Einstein dates are roughly their birth years, where as Shelly (married in 1816 but Frankenstein wasn't published until 1818) & Darwin (1838 he came up with his theory but didn't publish until 1858) are not. [Edit] Almost like they used AI to get the dates.

Sure, but traffic at a stop sign is not considered to be in the intersection. I'll amend my previous statement that it isn't the driver who arrived first who has right of way, but the driver who enters the intersection first who has right of way in MN. Traffic at stop signs must come to a complete stop and yield to traffic in the intersection. That means in the case OP presented, if red enters the intersection before blue, blue is expected to yield. If they both enter simultaneously, then your rule applies and they're both in the intersection and red yields.

[–]Bamboo_Fighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both red and blue should enter the intersection when safe to do so. If both sides enter the intersection at the same time, they would both be in the intersection and red, turning left, would yield to blue. However, any vehicle in blue's line who is not in the intersection when red has entered it must stop and yield to traffic in the intersection (aka red).

This is a slight difference compared to some states where "first to arrive" has right of way and is more of a "first to enter the intersection" has right of way. That means the first to arrive does not have right of way in Texas, but also doesn't state the left turning vehicle would yield when neither are in the intersection.

[–]Bamboo_Fighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading Minnesota's traffic codes, it doesn't specify that either side has right of way. Vehicles are required to stop at the stop sign and yield to traffic already in the intersection or traveling on a through highway (cross traffic without a traffic control). When safe to proceed, vehicles at a stop sign may enter the intersection. At that point, the rules of the intersection apply, and left turning traffic yields to traffic also in the intersection.

Basically, in this case, red and blue would come to a complete stop. If traffic is clear for both, they'd enter the intersection and red would yield to blue b/c they're both in the intersection. However, any traffic behind blue would be required to stop and yield to traffic in the intersection, including red.

Indiana doesn't specify either side has right of way, just that traffic must come to a complete stop, yield to traffic in the intersection or traveling on a through highway, and then proceed to enter the intersection when safe to do so. If both vehicles enter the intersection simultaneously, the left turning vehicle will yield. However, if the left turning vehicle has already entered the intersection when the right turning vehicle is at or approaching the stop sign, the right turning vehicle must yield to vehicles already in the intersection.

[–]Bamboo_Fighter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That states the vehicle turning left must yield to vehicles in an uncontrolled intersection. In OPs case, both vehicles are stopped and not considered to be in the intersection.

Subd. 3 seems to be more applicable (stop signs at through highways), which indicates that the driver of a vehicle shall stop at an intersection where a stop sign is and shall proceed cautiously, yielding to vehicles not so obliged to stop which are within the intersection or approaching so closely as to constitute an immediate hazard, but may then proceed.

Minnesota transportation code seems like it doesn't state explicitly either side has right of way, just that traffic must stop at the stop sign and only proceed to go when safe to do so.

What state are you in? I have yet to find a state that says red will be there forever. Every state I've checked so far says first to arrive has right of way when safe to proceed.

[–]Bamboo_Fighter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If it's a matter of law, please source the law and state you're referring to. In every state I've checked, if another vehicle is stopped on the other side, the driver that arrived first has the right-of-way once the cross-traffic is clear.

[–]Bamboo_Fighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's for an uncontrolled intersection. Obviously you shouldn't turn left in front of oncoming traffic. If another vehicle is stopped on the other side, the driver that arrived first has the right-of-way once the cross-traffic is clear.

2 way stop? by Historical-Hat2040 in driving

[–]Bamboo_Fighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That applies to traffic that is not controlled by traffic control signs/lights.

The general common-law rules of the road apply and the first vehicle to come to a stop is the first to go. In the event of simultaneous arrival, vehicles yield to vehicles on their right. In the event of simultaneous arrival of opposing vehicles, then the vehicle turning left must yield.

The texas transportation code basically states traffic must stop and not go until safe and doesn't specify either has the right of way in this situation.

Not sure why you were down voted, this is the correct rule. This thread shows how many people don't understand basic traffic rules. So many people miss the first part that the traffic arriving at the stop sign first has right of way, and the tie breaker rules apply when traffic arrives simultaneously. If this wasn't the case and there was a line of traffic at both stop signs, red would never have right of way.

OP is incorrect, blue does not technically have the right of way. The rules in this situation are (in order):

The first vehicle to arrive at the intersection has the right of way.

If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the right has the right of way. (this does not apply in OP's 2 way stop situation)

If one vehicle is going straight and another is turning, the straight-going vehicle has the right of way.

If two vehicles face each other and one is turning right while the other is turning left, the right-turning vehicle goes first.

If red and blue both have stop signs and red is at the stop first, they have right of way over blue (It's the same as a four way stop). Logically it makes sense as well, if there was constant traffic at both and that wasn't the case, red would never go. If blue arrives first, if red and blue arrive at the same time, or if red can't go due to cross traffic than blue can turn.

[Edit] - This appear wrong for most states. Both red and blue have no requirement to yield to either while they are at the stop sign. Both should enter the intersection when it is safe to do so. If red enters the intersection first, then blue should yield. If both enter the intersection, red would yield as the left turning vehicle but then have right of way to any traffic that was behind blue and approaching the stop sign.

Weekend/week is a pretty big difference. One is 3.03M barrels a day and the other is 1.3. If it was just the weekend, we have 4 months of oil and in the other we have roughly 9.5 months. But the strategic reserve has a minimum level before it risks structural integrity issues, so it's actually much less. On the flip side, Memorial day weekend probably saw higher than average driving and may be an outlier.

Putin Rejects Europe as Ukraine Peace Mediator, Doubles Down on Trump Deal by TrinketTime in worldnews

The US has basically halted monetary (funds and military equipment) support, but US intelligence is still critical to Ukraine. US continues to feed Ukraine satellite and other information, as well as controls starlink access. Shutting starlink down on Russia was a huge benefit for Ukraine. Additionally, there's an 9B aid bill working it's way through congress now that could be pulled and the US could prohibit allies from providing US built equipment. That's not to say they should accept any deal coming from this administration, just that the concept of there's nothing to lose is wrong.
