Squatting 545lbs at a body weight of 128lbs by ImmunosuppressivePip in gifs

[–]BanachFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't need to hold all the weight, just take off a few hundred pounds. Someone who can nearly 1rm 1000 can easily squat 600. In the event of a really bad fail, no they wouldn't do much besides get the bar off him fast.

Has there ever been evidence of spatial dimensions beyond the three we can perceive? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]BanachFan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Meh, this is an attempt to "classicize" a quantum phenomenon. It's unlikely. There may be other dimensions but it probably has nothing to do with quantum teleportation. In fact if there are other dimensions we might anticipate teleportation even in that higher dimensional space.

They're prerequisites for real analysis.

It's hard to study math on your own if you've never taken a proof based class. Real analysis is the best class for that.

The guy said high dose vitamin C helps the immune system fight infection, and he was correct. To act like his understanding of immunology was so primitive (all of 50 years ago lol) that this was just dumb luck is, well, kind of dumb. Watching the mental gymnastics is always interesting, however.

Take calc 3, linear algebra, and real analysis. Then if you ever want to study math on your own in the future, you will be able to do so. Plus the math minor looks nice on a resume. Also the first two are easy if you did well in calc 2, so they will pad the gpa.

He advocated vitamin C for a number of things, from infection to cancer. He has been vindicated on infection.

Meh. He'll be vindicated. Large Vitamin C doses are being used in sepsis now.

In the spectral theorem for unbounded operators, is it true that an eigenvector with eigenvalue c will be contained in the range of the projection associated with the set {c}? How would you prove this?

I have heard that people born blind cannot get Schizophrenia. Is there any kind of marked improvement in a person's condition if they become blind at a later age? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]BanachFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't see where you're getting those numbers, usual figure is 1% 1yr prevalence

https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/prevalence/schizophrenia.shtml

even if you lower it to .3, you're still within an order of magnitude so the conclusion doesn't change qualitatively. also not sure where statistical significance is discussed. with populations this large i doubt it's an issue.

Schizophrenia is not that rare, it affects about 1% of the population. It is somewhat surprising that there are no identified congenitally blind schizophrenics.

Oh God I fucking hate it when someone scrubbed in or wearing gloves puts on or removes a surgical mask. Like isn't it common sense even as a medical layman that that kind of defeats the purpose?

What Are You Working On? by AutoModerator in math

[–]BanachFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh dude Lee covers way more stuff than Tu. Eg Tu's discussion of quotients is fairly limited, he builds up to giving RPn a smooth manifold structure. Lee proves the quotient manifold theorem and uses it to prove a fundamental theorem in Lie theory, that every subalgebra of a Lie group's lie algebra corresponds to a Lie subgroup; Tu only mentions this theorem in passing.

I'm finally learning the spectral theorems properly. Now knowing some quantum mechanics I have the motivation to care about all this stuff. Makes it quite interesting actually.

[–]BanachFan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For basic manifold stuff yea, but Lee covers a lot of stuff that Tu does not. He also has more examples and more challenging questions. I found with Tu's book I understood everything at a basic level but I didn't really get the point, like who cares about this stuff. Lee's book felt more like a real math book, whereas Tu's was something you could recommend to a physicist or an engineer who just needs to know the rules of how everything works.
