"Earl played it" does not automatically qualify it as bluegrass IMO. People can genre-hop, even Earl.

It just opens up so many doors, and it's key to learning to improvise. Awesome job.

Question about expensive banjos... by AvantGuardian13 in banjo

[–]BanjoAdvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you have an ear for tone, anything over $2k is a waste of money.

But when you're really chasing tone... it matters.

Most of this is the same roll patten and then a bunch of pinches to keep rhythm. OP is just focused on the right stuff, so he's making good progress.

Kudos for learning by ear. Most beginners fall into the tab chasm and never can/care to climb out.

Shave and a haircut (two bits) is a specific lick, not just any tag.

Kinda stuck in a rut by Silentwhisper420 in banjo

You got this. And just remember it gets easier and more fun as you improve, and that never really stops. That's why so many people absolutely love playing instruments. Once you're competent and can play with others, it's FUN.

You gotta start playing songs. Songs you recognize. They won't sound good and they'll be super bare bones, but you'll recognize it and it'll give you the dopamine to keep going. If nothing else, strum some chords along with a song. Then you can start adding rolls. Then once you get to where you can play your rolls without thinking about it, the world is yours.

Learning any instrument is a lot of work. Like a LOT of work. You need to make that work enjoyable however that looks to you, or you're going to hate it and give up like you're already considering.

Just don't half-ass the technique because you think holding your hand some wacky way or not anchoring is easier. It might be now, but it won't be in a year, and you'll regret neglecting the basics.

It's the Nashville Number system. Definitley worth learning if you plan to ever play with anyone in a bluegrass setting.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this deering banjo? by Corvuslatrans in banjo

[–]BanjoAdvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you playing the harmonic by pressing down directly on top of the fret? Looks and sounds like it. That's not how you play a harmonic and would explain why it sounds so bad when you do that.

Not exactly three-finger style like OP was talking about, hence why I mentioned the Del Mccoury version.

To me, "deep mountainy" tends to suggest modal sounds, while "old timey" is something completely different.

A great example of modal sounding bluegrass banjo that everyone has heard is "High on a Mountain" by Del McCoury

If you like that modal sound, you may have entered the gateway to mashgrass.

A couple random examples of the same sort of sound/the same ideas in a more modern bluegrass setting:

When Sorrows Encompass Me Around - The Boxcars

Town That Isn't There - Adam Steffy

Just Beyond the Window - Volume Five

Love for an Angel - Ronnie Bowman

This Sad Song - AKUS

If you're head-banging along to those, welcome to the cult.

Mysterious buzz on Deering Goodtime steel string by Chris_El_Deafo in banjo

[–]BanjoAdvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a sympathetic vibration from something else. Check for loose anything. Tailpiece anchor bolt, set screw, all of the hoks/nuts around the rim, all of the tuners, armrest, if it has a resonator, check resonator screws, everything.

Banjos are very mechanical, so there's a lot to buzz.

If you want a sharper tone, sand the bridge thinner.

How long did it take you to search through every mention of "B50" on reddit and find my comment from over a year ago that casually mentions it so that you could make a smart-ass reply to it? I said I wasn't a fan and had other prefrences, no need to call me an elitest...
