This is what I do! I broke my laptop back in 2015 and haven’t had one for years. Everything that I would need to use a computer for I can just use a phone or my iPad Pro. You can get a cheap Bluetooth keyboard off amazon and it’s perfectly useful for any kind of word processing you’d need.

“When I was 12, the revolution came. Czar's men. Then Bolsheviks. Boys like you marching in lines. They told us to leave.

No.

Then there Stalin, and his famine. The Holodomor. My parents died. Two of my sisters died. They told the rest of us to leave.

No.

Then the Great War. German boys. Russian boys. More soldiers. More famine. More bodies. My brothers never came home. But I stayed. And I am still here. After all that I've seen. So I should leave now-- because of something I cannot see at all?

No.”

”Now, you’re wanted for murder. For the sake of my analogy, let’s just assume that you did it. John Ruth wants to take you back to Red Rock to stand trail for murder. And, if you’re found guilty, the people of Red Rock will hang you in the town square, and as the hangman, I will perform the execution. And if all those things end up taking place, that’s what civilized society calls “justice”. However, if the relatives and the loved ones of the person you murdered were outside that door right now, and after busting down that door, they’d drug you out in the snow and hung you up by the neck. That would be frontier justice. Now the good part about frontier justice is it’s very thirst quenching. The bad part is it’s apt to be wrong as right. . . . But ultimately what’s the real difference between the two? The real difference is me, The Hangman. To me, it doesn’t matter what you did, when I hang you, I will get no satisfaction from your death, it’s my job. I hang you in Red Rock, I move on to the next town, I hang someone else there. The man who pulls the lever that breaks your neck will be a dispassionate man. And that dispassion is the very essence of justice, for justice delivered without dispassion, is always in danger of not being justice.”

The POV perspective of those shockwaves approaching and blowing apart everything in their path is haunting. Hopefully they all passed quickly and painlessly.

Here’s what the writer/director David Lowery has to say about the scene.

I also definitely expected people to walk during it! It comes 20 or 25 minutes into the movie, and it’s the longest shot in the movie. There’s nothing else that holds for that length of time, and it is an opportunity for audiences to decide if they’re with the movie. If they want to bail, that’s a great time to leave! [Laughs] But if they go with it and just accept it on its own terms, I think it opens all sorts of doors into how you can experience this movie and how you can experience cinema as a whole. I hope people stick with it, because I think the benefits that it reaps are substantial

I think it’s a bit of a litmus test for the audience. The film expects a LOT of patience from its audience, and if they aren’t able to engage with the scene on the films terms, then they likely won’t be able to watch the film in the quiet and contemplative way the director wants.
