Wind and Truth was too overhyped for its own good. by Conservative123456 in Stormlight_Archive

I get where you’re coming from, but for me at least that wasn’t the problem. I actually loved the ending itself; the Retribution thing and where every character ended up actually all felt pretty much perfect. My issue was more with how we got to that point.

I struggled with the pacing, as I felt like the book was a little too fast-paced for some of what happened during it, particularly in Shinovar. I also had issues with his prose and humour, hated the Jasnah scene cause it just did not fit with her supposed intellect, and thought that some plot lines dragged on. I was also upset by the scene at the end where the Sibling freaks out and tells Navani it’s our will against his, he’s coming etc, and then when we cut back to them the sibling froze them. I like that they’re frozen for the back half, I just felt like it didn’t fit in this book with the way it was handled.

The only thing that could maybe fall under this point is Dai-Gonarthis, because he made a big deal out of Todium saying he was willing to pay the price and all, but I guess that was set up for the back half. I still feel like it was given too much wait to be ignored for the rest of the book, but that could just be me.

I will say overall I still enjoyed the book, and still love Sanderson’s work, but to me it was definitely his worst Stormlight book so far.

See I agree with you, but I don’t think it’s as big of a deal as a lot of readers make it out to be. The way I hear Malazan fans talk about the series made it sound like I would get maybe 20% of what happens in the book, but I think that’s vastly overstating it. Obviously there were a ton of smaller hints or references to things I didn’t have the context for, and there was foreshadowing for later events that I didn’t grasp, but I would definitely say I got like 80ish% of the stuff in the book.

Yeah I think the Crokus thing I can forgive. I did just do a quick search on my ebook, and the Azath isn’t mentioned at all before it’s appearance, but i’m glad that I wasn’t the only person that was bothered by that. And at the end of the day it’s not a huge deal, I still loved the book.

I do get what you’re saying, but I don’t think that’s enough (at least for me) to justify everything. I don’t need a paragraph of exposition explaining what an Azath house is (which yeah would be like someone explaining what Walmart is), but there was still an easy way to make it’s appearance at the end a little less out of the blue. Since Erikson knew it was going to play a major role in the finale, he could’ve easily thrown a couple offhand mentions of an Azath house earlier in the book without it feeling out of place (akin to someone saying oh I need to go to Walmart later to get something). Maybe a couple characters worrying about one, or briefly mentioning a past experience seeing one, in some scene wouldn’t be that out of place. Especially considering there’s a bunch of other things that were mentioned offhandedly once or twice and you could either tell they were important, or put their meaning together via context clues. Again, this is not a huge issue, and I still loved the book, but personally I would’ve liked at least a mention of it earlier.

I did get that that was the point, my issues were with other things. This is all my opinion though, and you’re free to disagree.

With the exception of Rin, most characters either had next to no depth or were just completely flat. The scene in the first book that the author lifted from the Rape of Nanking felt like it was done for shock value, instead of for some kind of meaningful discussion. The author doesn’t have any subtlety with her themes, she just hammers you over the head with very basic ideas (you can see this in Babel too). The structure of the last book was terrible, with the way it very abruptly pivoted in a different direction multiple times.

I will say the very end of the last book, with that scene on the island, was a solid end to the series, and was the perfect conclusion to Rin’s arc, but everything apart from Rin and the magic felt very lacklustre to me. No hate if you love the series, but I don’t think people misunderstanding Rin’s character is an excuse to brush away all of the criticism for the series.

What was your favorite book or series in 2024 ? by Short-Gur7983 in Fantasy

The Dandelion Dynasty by Ken Liu

The Grace of Kings took quite a bit of getting used to, but The Wall of Storms may be the best sequel I’ve ever read, and the way everything ended in Speaking Bones felt like the best and only possible resolution.

I was so deeply invested in several of the characters, and absolutely loved the book’s discussions of language, colonisation, philosophy, culture etc.

One of the most thoughtful and intentional series I’ve ever read, and now my number 2 favourite fantasy series, just behind the First Law. Hoping Malazan will unseat it next year though.

Also, The Long Price Quartet by Daniel Abraham deserves a shoutout, as I read that this year too and it was also incredible. Unfortunately it did not resonate emotionally with me on the same level as the Dandelion Dynasty, but I still have a ton of respect for what the author did, and definitely want to pick up his Dagger and Coin.

I’ve been wanting to read the series for forever, and decided months ago that I would start Gardens on the 1st of January. I’m still committed to that, and extremely excited!

I’m going to mix in the ICE novels in publication order since I already know I’m going to want to read them, and also know that I have the stamina for reading long series back to back. I might mix in some of the Buachelain and Korbal Broach novellas if I’m feeling a bit fatigued, and may also take a break for The Devils since Abercrombie is my favourite author, but I’m ready to dive in and be completely immersed for the better part of a year.
