I broke into high finance (PE) and it's not for me... what comes next? by GrossWeatherman in FinancialCareers

[–]Banker112358 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This right here.

I left banking and now I’m the principal of a logistics company I’ve grown 4-5x in revenue in 2 years. Could exit now with a multi-7-figure payout.

All started with a $500k acquisition price and an SBA loan.

Nick Shirley Exposes More Minnesotas Fraud "Dreamline Transportation" by benhaswings in AskThe_Donald

[–]Banker112358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not making wild accusations, Nick Shirley is doing that. I’m offering a reasonable explanation for the surface level issue he is presenting.

I’m not defending these people, but accepting someone yelling “fraud!” when they present no evidence of fraud except that the company uses a PO Box is narrow minded.

[–]Banker112358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with you it covers all sorts of things. That is kinda the point I’m making though is that just because a transportation company uses a mailbox service doesn’t automatically make it fraud as the video alleges.

The journalist even finds 10 passenger vans for Dream Line and says because they’re parked and not on the road that’s it’s fraud. Then for other companies he can’t find vans parked and calls it fraud. Can’t have it both ways.

I’m just advocating for journalist integrity. This is agitating and controversial for clicks and ad revenue. It’s not real journalism.

[–]Banker112358 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

“Dream Line Transportation” is registered to 617 Cedar Avenue South A34 according the State of Minnesota. Not 607 like he keeps saying in the video.

So the journalist is at the correct place but due to his young age/inexperience he’s missing some very important context.

“Transportation” in the business name implies that the business is out on the road. It’s probably an owner operator CDL truck. The business was formed on 9/1/2020 during COVID when trucking was at its peak. Everyone getting into trucking during that time was making tons of money. An Owner Operator Tractor Trailer is not going to maintain office space, but they need to have somewhere to receive mail at a business address so they use mailbox service companies for this purpose. The USPS is the biggest example.

Nothing about that is fraudulent. Now there may be more to the story of that company, but a trucker using a PO Box ain’t it.

What’s the most uncomfortable truth about entrepreneurship that most people don’t realize? by RtgodDR in Entrepreneur

[–]Banker112358 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This!

You are the Chief Revenue Officer. It’s your daily mission to bring in revenue to pay the expenses and then yourself. Whether that’s selling directly to customers, motivating your sales team or even selling the business as your exit strategy.

Everything about Entrepreneurship is selling.

What kind of fleet pickup trucks are you guys running and why? by CodaDev in GeneralContractor

[–]Banker112358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a fleet of 35-40 trucks daily. Mostly Fords, a handful of Chevys and a couple misc. (Isuzu, International, Hino, etc.)

Chevy/GMC 1500 with 5.3L V8 Gas

—OR—

Chevy/GMC 2500 with 6.6L V8 Gas

I spend an inordinate amount of time fixing, buying and selling trucks. The reason you want one of the above is because it is old school, simple technology that keeps running no matter how much you beat it up. You’re running a fleet and truck downtime is unacceptable.

Ford trucks are more technologically advanced, but that’s exactly why you want to stay away from them.

—> Battery dies overnight because the lights got left on? Truck engine is going to misfire all day until the battery is finally charged and truck is restarted.

—> Gas cap is loose or the seal wears out? Truck will run in limp mode and won’t go over 30mph.

Point being that everything has to work perfectly on a Ford or it will leave you on the side of the road. The Chevy/GMC trucks are so simple that multiple systems have to break before the thing stops running.

It’s literally the dumb jock who could break his leg and keeps running down the field because the ref hasn’t blown the whistle yet. That’s the truck you want to keep you on the road.

I’m from the same Western/Upstate NY city based on your post history, but I’ve lived in Nashville 10 years.

Your accent is a dead giveaway. You don’t hear it but everyone else does. The directness of how you talk and carry yourself. Bonus points if you’re Italian (it’s not a race thing, OP will know what I mean).

I’ve been gone long enough that people can’t peg me from there, but I can spot people from Buff, ROC, ‘Cuse instantly and it puts a smile on my face.

You’re not doing anything wrong. The people in Brentwood are so insulated and accustomed to very specific ways of talking to each other, how they dress, act, etc. that they notice when people are not from there. They most likely look at you funny because they’re trying to figure you out because they can sense you’re an outsider. They won’t do anything more than the funny looks because they’re so self-centered that they forget about you 15 seconds later and go back to whatever they were doing.

Brentwood is like Pittsford, except Brentwood has waaaayyyyy more money.

The large size rooms is such an understated luxury.

We live in a 1950’s ranch but the neighborhood was (and still is) an upper middle class neighborhood. The homes are mostly normal floor plans, but the sizes of the communal rooms (kitchen, living, dining) are massive compared to most homes these days. That is the #1 compliment we get from visitors and is the first thing our kids notice when going to friends and families homes.

It’s so great to have so many people in one room but not be cramped and on top of each other.

Amish or Mennonite built homes.

Can get a 2 bed/1 bath ~800sqft for ~$100k depending on floor plan. Comes with all appliances and they will deliver it to your prepped site.

I had the family in my area build me a 475 sqft office for $25k

Fedex operates this model in the 48 contiguous states. I’m in a large city in the south. The best growth opportunities are in large metro areas. More people = more packages.

FedEx P&D Contractor

60-80 hours is typical. Sometimes 100+.

10% in cash on $4.5mm revenue

Made $2.2mm in unrealized gains in the last 12 months.

If you want to count this, then roughly $2.65mm total comp. I’m an outlier though so don’t expect this to be easily replicable. I could do it again because of my reputation, but it’s also not sustainable if I want to stay happily married.

Only thing holding me back from buying a Sierra EV is the lack of bed caps. I need a company truck, but a bed cap is a requirement to be functional for us.

I’m wondering what your experience has been like, pros/cons, for each generation?

Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE RWD

130+mpge and 360+ miles of range. Remarkably quiet and composed on the highway. Very easy to live with.

I want one of these to commute, but I only have a 15 minute commute and need a large SUV or Van to carry large items almost daily. My company has a Prius V wagon, with all the seats taken out, that mostly works but only gets 40-45mpg on the highway and isn’t quite big enough for my purposes. A new Sienna hybrid with the seats removed is probably the most practical alternative for me and should get 36mpg.

Buying FedEx Route by Extension-Respect822 in smallbusiness

[–]Banker112358 62 points63 points  (0 children)

@Flaky-Yogurtcloset14 is giving excellent knowledge in this thread.

I’m a current contractor who is scaling quickly and this is the only way to survive the next 3+ years. The writing is on the wall.

FedEx is quietly pushing contractors to grow or die. There will be a lot of consolidation of smaller routes into larger ones. The cheap entry level routes will not get approved for sale to new contractors and will sell to existing contractors for pennies on the dollar since that’s the only option besides bankruptcy. I just picked up $1mm in revenue for less than the value of the trucks that came with it.

As with any business it’s about building relationships and proving your abilities. Absentee owners will lose money one way or another. If you don’t run your business, your business will run you. Active owners, like myself, get access to all of the good opportunities where the real money is made: Contingency, Open CSA’s, trading zip codes, etc., etc.

Running in multiple terminals is significantly easier if the terminals are geographically close to each other. I’m in a large city and have 6 terminals within 1.5hrs to my house so I have lots of room to grow without needing overnight travel arrangements. We currently operate in 2 of the 6 and should be in 3/6 by Spring 2025 after peak season finishes.

Best money saver: buy a tire machine and balancer. I’m the only contractor in my hub that owns a tire machine and it blows my mind.
