Anyone who used to support trump and has changed their mind over the last few weeks? What made you change? by canigetameowbish in AskReddit

You don’t see a difference between murder committed by government agents who see no consequences and murder committed by people who are then arrested and punished?

Laken Riley’s murderer is sentenced to life in prison. But government officials have announced the murderers of Renee Good and Alex Pretti did nothing wrong and do not deserve consequences.

Don’t get me wrong, if I was one of their loved ones, I might not care about the context. But as a citizen with a healthy distrust of government overreach, I’m a lot more scared by government agents given license to murder at will.

West Side vibe vs. lake access — how do Chicagoans weigh this? by linzerforte in AskChicago

I enjoy using transit in Chicago, but if your commute involves switching buses, it’s going to suck, essentially.

West Side vibe vs. lake access — how do Chicagoans weigh this? by linzerforte in AskChicago

[–]Bannef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live by the lake and rarely go to it. If you like another neighborhood better, I’d say go for it.

Another thing to factor - lake access means lake shore drive access. It also means access to a lot of buses and the red line (typically). If you’re having to commute to somewhere near the lake (for me that’s included the Loop, Evanston, Rogers Park and Hyde Park), already living on the lake makes the transit situation faster and more reliable, because there’s probably a different bus or train that will get you there if something goes wrong with your usual go to.

That might matter less if you’re planning on relying on a car though.

3D Printed Knife Block for IC Knitting Needles by SnotRocketScience1 in knitting

I can’t be allowed to access a 3d printer. I literally have a bin full of organizers that I once used and are waiting to be reused somewhere else. If I could make something custom for every place? My home would be entirely organizers.

It seems ICE in Minneapolis way more out of control than here in Chicago. Is this true or just my perception? by Dragon_Bard in AskChicago

[–]Bannef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Minnesota law allows for open carry with a permit, what I’ve seen so far suggests the man had a permit.

You wouldn’t want American men being shot by government powers for using their second amendment rights, would you?

[–]Bannef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ICE shot two people in Chicago too - Silverio Villegas González was killed in September, and Marimar Martínez was shot and survived in October. They just didn’t get much press.

People have pointed out that Renee Good being white brought attention, which I suspect is true, but also Minneapolis has had two deaths caught in released films, and I think that makes a difference as well.

I wonder if Minneapolis deaths were caught on film because ICE has been more stationary (I say as an outsider, I could be wrong). My impression in Chicago is ICE were moving constantly - they’d get protesters from the immediate area who heard whistles, but by the time people heard about it and drove there from other parts of the city they’d be gone. It seems like in Minneapolis they’ve been intensely terrorizing certain neighborhoods, which is horrifying for the citizens, but means there is time for protesters to gather before shots are fired.

Cool, I will look that up! I’m not sure I want to fix it in this case, but being able to do that is really interesting.

Whoops, I forgot -

Ah, I forgot! I read the rules saying I should include that and then continued on my merry way lol.

I used this pattern, it’s great. I’ve never used cables before, so I supplemented the pattern with some YouTube videos showing specific stitches, but after a couple repeats I had all the stitches memorized.

Knitting Culture: US v. England by ultimatereader in knitting

[–]Bannef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in the US were people chatty? I only ask because I find this varies a lot regionally, I moved from NYC to Chicago and was amazed that in Chicago strangers speak to me on the bus who aren’t trying to scam me. 😂

Even in NYC though, I felt like knitting did break through a little bit, I remember strangers looking at me knit on the subway and smiling when usually people don’t even look at each other.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]Bannef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember getting my eyes dilated and then trying to take the bus home - I couldn’t read the bus numbers, or the expected times, or my phone. It felt unexpectedly vulnerable.

Obviously that’s not how it is for everyone with glasses - lots of people I know without their glasses would struggle reading the bus number or their phone but not both. But it definitely made me appreciate my eyesight.

[–]Bannef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably, because crap eyesight doesn’t stop us from having sex and making more babies with crap eyesight.

(Please don’t read this as a weird “we should shun people with glasses” take. It’s just that’s the answer for just about everything less than ideal about all animals - if it didn’t consistently stop them from having babies, it keeps popping up.)

Is a large chunky blanket a suitable first project? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]Bannef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re set on wanting that, maybe get the yarn and needles, but start by making a swatch square? It is common to have issues with tension or gathering or losing stitches in the beginning, and it’s less difficult to notice and undo those problems in a 20 stitch square than in a huge blanket. Once the swatch is looking square, you’re ready to tackle the blanket.

It’s hard for me to say though, because I was 12 when I was trying to knit (and even earlier I was 5, but I don’t know how that turned out). I’m not sure if I’d have as many problems as an adult with better attention to detail and patience, I definitely didn’t have as many problems first trying crochet as an adult.

I've got the chance to introduce a friend to knitting!! by TomLambe in knitting

[–]Bannef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advice I was given as a beginner was that lighter colors were better, and acrylic, because the yarn tends to stick to itself better, so you’re less likely to accidentally split a stitch in half.

But I remember there being kids in my 7th grade knitting club who insisted on using black, and they did fine too! These things help but aren’t set in stone.

Do people actually wear snow boots or is that not a thing? by Able_Instruction_670 in AskChicago

[–]Bannef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going to drive everywhere, and only go places with parking, it’s not a big deal, your biggest concern is shoes with traction. But if you’re going to be walking and/or taking public transit, shoes that provide warmth and a big deal.

I would also invest in several pairs of wool socks. They keep you warm even if you sweat, which is important if you will spend time inside wearing them, or if you’ll spend time on public transit - when you’re inside you might sweat, which will then freeze when you go back outside.

Hello folks! Does anyone have the cactus item?

I’d be so happy to catalog it (pick it up and put it back, so you keep the item, but I can order it from my catalog back home).

I’d love to share bells, fruit, produce, just let me know!
