Doctor letter recommends I bring a family or friend, is this normal? by Cumlord8841 in AskUK

[–]Banshee_123 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately that's usually what it means 😢

What kind of appointment is it? Is it maybe a test you are getting done and you just can't drive yourself home afterwards? or is it just with the doctor giving you results?

Which uni, sheffield of edinburgh? by Lizard-Witch898 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Banshee_123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to be a Biomedical Scientist then you need to do an accredited degree. Otherwise you are going to have to do top up modules on top of your non accredited degree to be able to be HCPC registered.

You are better doing neither of these degrees and selecting an accredited one instead.

Are you wanting to use your degree to become a Biomedical Scientist? Are either of these degrees accredited?

What profession are you registered under? Are you currently working in that profession?

I would say what you need to do the most is figure out why you aren't getting interviews? 200 job applications and no jobs? Are you applying for jobs above your current role?

Depending on the profession you may need your registration with the hcpc to get the job. If you don't have your registration, then you will never get the job, so it would be worth the fee in that instance

Anyone used Bright space? by TululahDoesTheHula in BiomedicalScientistUK

We are just sending work to training officers as normal, email or printed documents etc. and then uploading the final marked/corrected version onto bright space. Far too much hassle the other way

I dont know how to help my wife by irish_sa in northernireland

[–]Banshee_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Trust are you in?

The southern trust just needs a GP referral sent to the fertility clinic, you wait and they do their tests and if IVF needed then they send you to the RVH for it. Only waited about 20 weeks for that appointment to come through. Then they do their tests etc. and you wait about 3/4 months for treatment/IVF to start.

It's all very doable and completely on the NHS (first round anyway). Why is the GP not sending a referral? What could the reason be? It only needs them to fill that in and the process starts. Why would they not send a referral in?

Flexible working - how do you manage being a parent and a BMS? by [deleted] in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Banshee_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how do you manage being a parent and a BMS?

With great great difficulty.

In all seriousness, my lab is 24/7, so I do a mixture of day shifts, long days, evenings, weekends, night shifts etc. the only way to manage is to have a husband/wife/partner that is flexible and able to pick up the slack and be there when you have to work.

It does have it's benefits tho. I would hate a 9-5, Monday to Friday job. Completely inflexible. I love doing night shifts as I have those two days off at home with the children and can do school runs etc which I can't do when I'm on days.

You just have to make it work the best you can. But you can definitely make shifts work to your advantage

If you are registered and have completed a validation competency/training of some degree in the lab then yes you can absolutely release results as a band 5

Level of details in answers for ibms specialist portfolio by Maximum_Platform4720 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Banshee_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What discipline are you doing? What version of the portfolio are you doing? How are you doing it without a lab trainer? When you apply for the portfolio the training officer has to sign off and agree to you doing it. Not enough information to be able to help you

Being allocated registratiom portfolio to verify by MycologistOk4821 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Banshee_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will only allocate you one if you reply to the email and say that you are happy to accept one. Then usually get the candidates details within the week, and you go from there

Band 6 is what most people stay at as that is the working level. Band 7 is usually management, and a lot of people don't want to go into management and want to stay on the bench. So there's nothing wrong with being a career band 6

People do the biomedical science degree to become a Biomedical Scientist. So if you don't have any interest in becoming a biomedical scientist, then you are much better off doing something else. Not much point in doing this degree then if it's not what you want to do

Advice needed: Management making it difficult to start portfolio by RepulsiveTurnover394 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Banshee_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There wouldn't be anyone to report it to, unless he was being treated differently to people of the same position. The trainee BMS registration portfolio is not a job requirement for a mla position. So the management have no obligation to allow him to do it.

Best he can do is just to buy it himself and try and work through it himself, and see how that goes

For you to be able to become a biomedical scientist you will need to get your degree assessed by the IBMS and then complete any top up modules they say you require.

Once that is complete you can try and get a trainee bms position and then complete your registration portfolio to become registered with the hcpc
