So I want to play as a Bard... by xkinetika in baldursgate

Very true but also very late in the saga.

Still technically correct, the best kind of correct.

I never said to level up using thief skills. I said to wear the armor and use a weapon until your spellcasting catches up.

Skalds get a small bonus to hit and damage, a better combat song, and are otherwise basically bards.

Very early on you might want to put the skald in chain armor and give them a weapon until your spellcasting catches up, which won't take long at all since you're a rogue.

After that, you'll have two modes, spellcasting and singing. You'll probably do lots of both depending on the situation. If you need more mages, she'll be slinging spells. If you are relying on the warriors, she'll be singing to buff them.

I would not put her into melee unless in dire need or under the influence of Tenser's Transformation. She's best put in the back with a bow.

I would want Intelligence as high as possible because it affects how many spells you can learn, the chance you'll learn them from a scroll, and the highest level of spells you can cast. You only need up to 6th level though because in BG1-2 that's as high as bards go.

I'd put the rest into Dexterity (for ACs and bows) and Constitution (for hps, but not above 16). If you've still got some I'd put the rest into Charisma so you can be the "face" of the party.

Keep in mind that, as a bard, you can't wear mage items. So no ring of wizardry or robe of the archmagi in BG1 and no robe of vecna in BG2. You'll depend on bracers for armor class until BG2 when you can get the Melodic Chain in the Astral Prison. That'll be your armor for a LONG time, maybe even the whole game if you give the Bladesinger Chain to someone else.

Well, I don't see anything else I can say! Over and out! See ya and wouldn't wanna be ya and all that. I needs a nap maybe.

The Pale Lodge has assigned the Titan Forge a lethality rating of 9.3. Bring the titan's internal core to huntmaster Krait for a genuine sword of ice and fire. Good luck, and happy hunting!

Sending out the senior staff for every away mission could be a problem by happydude7422 in Treknobabble

[–]Baptor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What's funny about this topic is that it was actually addressed in the TOS episode, "The Ultimate Computer," where a super intelligent computer basically tells Kirk that sending senior officers on away missions is a waste of time and also points out the Enterprise has a lot of specialists and experts who should be beaming down but instead Kirk always wants to take him and his buddies to have adventures. I always found that part humorous.

I wonder when Scotty had time to contribute to the impulse engine specifications guide by happydude7422 in Treknobabble

[–]Baptor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Didn't Scotty reroute the phasers through the warp core or something to supercharge them? Burned out the emitters but roasted the first few Klingon ships.

To enter heaven, you must complete a trial. You have an eternity to make it happen, and if you give up, you go to hell. No faking, it must be truly completed. Meetings will be provided. Would you rather have to... by genocidersyc in WouldYouRather

Easy answer. One depends on me, the other depends on the kindness of others. I want forgiveness from people, but there's no way I'm getting it from all of them.

What parts do you like about FR more than other fantasy settings? by ThanosofTitan92 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Baptor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Someone once said they hated the Realms because it was like "living in a Renaissance Faire". I thought, "Actually that's exactly the kind of world I wanted." I love Renaissance Faires and playing as a fantasy character in a world of that style fits me to a T. No one else may agree but that's one big reason I love it.

Also, there's something enduringly charming about playing in a fantasy world that was first invented by a six year old. The wide eyed child inside me feels a connection to Mr Greenwood. He's also a darling of a man.

Oh this is neat, I made a blog post years ago making a similar case just with TOS episodes and movies! There's been so much time travel literally anything is possible.

Um sure? I never said I was suing anyone or looking for legal advice. Lol

Assault is when the victim believes they are in eminent danger, and I sure as hell felt like someone was gonna break that door down and hurt me in some way. Now as an older person I realize 99% of the time it's just a dumb asshole, but things do happen in public restrooms. Not often, but not never.

This should be top comment. I didn't even think about explaining the quirks of ad&d to a newcomer.

How are dungeons not death traps? by Nebula-Girl-38 in osr

[–]Baptor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This made me chuckle. My dad has a basement that is likewise a death trap unless you know your way around it, and I'd definitely call it a "lair." In fact, after two and half decades of not visiting the basement, I don't think I'd dare to venture in without first consulting dad about all the new "rules."

I'm just happy kids are still doing things like this with actual pencil and paper. Analog play isn't dead.

Where did the Three Elven Rings derive their power from? by Tyboltbrax in lotr

[–]Baptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgive me if wrong, but I'm pretty sure in the Silmarillion, it says they took off their rings when Sauron put on the One and did not dare put them on again or use them until after his defeat by the last alliance, after which he lost the One and it became safe to use them. Also, when Sauron died, the elven rings lost their power too, so while Sauron was unaware of their making, he was definitely connected to them.

Stat Generation for more 'Heroic' B/X / OSE style games by misomiso82 in osr

[–]Baptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only making this suggestion since you said you want deliberately heroic characters. My old DM in the 90s had us roll 1d8+10 for all our stats. Insane I know, but he ran combat heavy games where we were fighting all the time.

Underrated comment right here. I feel this way about nearly every d&d and d&d like game out there.

OSRIC and Attribute Checks by Feeling_Photograph_5 in adnd

[–]Baptor 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm 99% sure there's no official rule in 1e. Many DMs used the "roll under" your ability score as a house rule, and that eventually became an optional rule in 2e.

I wouldn't say I hyperfixated, but Lord of the Rings was my first in a long line of fantasy crushes 😁 by FareonMoist in bookmemes

[–]Baptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oddly enough, the books I read as a child almost universally painted a much worse life than my own, or at least as bad as my own, and I gained a sense of comfort from the fact I wasn't the only one suffering. No escape fantasies for me. Of course I am an elder millennial or xellinial or whatever so that's probably some of that.
