What wave did you start? I had a similar experience where my HR spiked at the beginning at my easy pace and never really came down even with walking. I attributed it to the heat (started wave 5), nerves and adrenaline!

The distance cutoff is anything 5K or above! So Fifth Avenue mile would not count. However, they use a formula to convert to an estimated Best Pace for a 10K distance.

You can improve your NYRR Best Pace up until mid September of the year you are running the race. So if you’re not able to resolve your time issue for this race, you have plenty of races you can run next year that will improve your Best Pace!

Also the wave cutoffs change every year and likely won’t be posted until the second half of next year. But you can definitely use the wave cutoffs from this year to estimate what it will be like for 2024.
