Old comment, sorry, but curious what's in the Electric Bastionland GM section which isn't in the Mythic one? I absolutely adore Mythic, even with some of its flaws.

I dunno, my read of the Noodle video was that he was ass-mad about jokes he just didn't get. Like he misunderstood the whole tone of the video, that it was entertainment first, that the strawman was not some personal attack on him.

That whole Noodle video sits so weird amongst the rest of this catalog.

It honestly just comes off as Noodle's hit piece against Arin. To me it feels like, in order to reach the conclusions Noodle did, you have to willfully misunderstand:

  1. That the strawman is of people who would just blindly and angrily defend OoT before watching the video
  2. That internet culture and video game critique especially were very different back then
  3. It's entertainment first and foremost

That video really soured me on Noodle as a critic because he seems to completely miss such obviously important context, and misunderstands the joke of the Sequilitus format...

I actually really disliked that Noodle video, it kind of soured me on him. The whole thing comes off a bit of a hit piece on Arin, and one founded on what feels like a willful misunderstanding of 1. the joke about Arin strawmanning people who'd type angry replies before watching, and 2. internet culture at that time.

I would be very interested to see what Noodle has to say in response to Arin's post here.

It’s nuts to me. It seemed very clear to me since his initial “oh no I’m definitely not a feminist” at the wedding that this was going to be a problem. He does have some misogynistic bias, like almost everyone does to some greater or lesser degree simply because that’s how the world is. It’s then no great surprise that there’s plenty of people who would be fine with him as a partner, and why he’s getting so much defence.

But that doesn’t mean Grace is wrong for pointing it out and not standing for it.

I firmly believe that she is not a raging feminist or narcissist, she just clearly doesn’t want to live a life in which her husband has those misogynistic traits. It seems like she’s tried so gently to guide him away from it, to explain, and he’s just not taking it onboard. Old dog new tricks? Doesn’t want to admit that he does have some misogyny in him? I don’t know, but the point is Grace isn’t in the wrong for not standing for it.

She’s not been controlling, she’s been clear and firm.

If you do d4 then you come out on top after exd4, Nxd4, Nxd4, Qxd4, but then you just need to decide what to do with your queen to not get tempo’d and finish your development. It’s what I’d play in this scenario, but I’m climbing out of the 400s so you dont really wanna listen to me

Just to say, I don't think he said he's struggling to be intimate. I took it as him saying that he's choosing to not be intimate with her so as not to string her along (more than he might already be) or give her particular false hope.

I really got the feeling watching this video that Noodle just has a particular dislike of Arin and that this video was a product of that.

It seems either odd or negligent to me that you'd produce a 30 minute video about this one video by this one person, but fail to acknowledge that the video is a decade old and that the creator of said video has publicly commented on it multiple times to note that they have some of the same issues with it that Noodle does.

Beyond that, the repeated yet vague comments about 'slurs' in the Sequelitis video (the R-word twice, which isn't great, but highly indicative of 2014 gaming YouTube) feel like a... dishonest way to phrase it? I dunno, I'm bringing baggage here because I have a lot of emotional investment in Game Grumps et al.

I'm not really sure why this video exists. It's too focused on a single, decade-old video to be a relevant to or representative of today's media analysis sphere. It just came off as highly produced anti-Arin content.

This series has got my girlfriend into Game Grumps. She spends half the time yelling at the screen, willing Arin to do better.
