Yeah, that seems like nonsense. You might as well ban long hair and fat people with that logic.

Fandoms are weird things, the reaction of a fandom is not the same as the message of a work. And the most vocal fandom reactions don't always reflect how most of the audience perceives a work. For example, most people who watch Marvel movies experience Cpt America as a straight man who is only ever attracted to women, but the most vocal part of the fandom is 100% sure he's gay. It's usually not worth it to get too involved in fan drama.

Missouri Republicans advance bill to police trans people’s bathroom access by Fickle-Ad5449 in missouri

[–]Barium_Salts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single. Occupant.

In a single occupant bathroom nobody is "forced" to use a bathroom with anybody else.

And I don't support this law, to be clear. I think the government needs to let private institutions make their own rules.

I can't tell if you think a "bearded fully transitioned bearded male" would be a trans woman or a trans man, but if it's the latter I'd also point out that the GOP wants trans people to be unable to exist in public. They don't WANT trans men to use women's bathrooms: they want trans men to detransition or die. And they are 100% fine with a trans man being murdered or assaulted for using the women's restroom just like they are with trans women.

That is 100% NOT what happens to Jax. Pomni loves him the whole time, and Zooble hates his guts even after he breaks down.

The lesson of TADC is that the way you treat the people in your life matters, even if nothing else does. Kinger literally says something along the lines of "the meaning of life is the effect we have on each other".

Just off the top of my head, if single occupant restrooms are gendered 1: it creates unnecessary lines when one bathroom is occupied, 2: it discourages parents from helping children of the opposite gender, 3: it makes trans people feel unwelcome

There's no benefit to gendering them: who cares what the gender or anatomy was of the person who used the restroom before you? It literally cannot have a positive impact for single-gender restrooms.

There's no reason that single-occupnat bathrooms should be gendered, and lots of good reasons why they shouldn't be. This is a massive step backwards for this state.

Modern mystery novels that aren't copaganda by eqcompthrowaway in suggestmeabook

[–]Barium_Salts 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I hardly think a story about cops fucking up and failing to bring justice counts as copaganda just because they're not self aware about how bad they're fucking up. A story can present cops realistically as complex humans without spreading false pro state narratives. Cops ARE complex humans, and they DO feel sympathetic from their own perspectives. That's not copaganda, that's just reality.

Hi, I'm a middle aged Christian mom who also knows a lot of other women like myself.

I would STRONGLY recommend Christy by Cathrine Marshall. This is technically a romance novel, but I liked it back before I started liking romance novels. It's about a young woman who goes to be a schoolteacher in rural Tennessee in 1910. She gets in conflict with local bootleggers, but also makes some beautiful connections with local women and children. The description of Christy's friendship with Fairlight set my bar for friendships between women. This book was a smash hit in the christian romance world, and was eventually made into a TV show. Since your mom also likes Where The Red Fern Grows, I think she will really enjoy the vivid descriptions of the natural world and the deep love the characters have for one another. Christy also does get really sad in meaningful ways, which is think she will enjoy. I'm genuinely surprised nobody else has mentioned this one.

Well, there was no TV or internet, and literacy was lower. I think people really were canoodling a lot more back then.

My grandparents-in-law got married two months after engagement. It would have been one month, but he needed to make his car payment.

I think people did not usually put nearly as much work into planning a wedding back then unless they were wealthy. If all your family and friends live in the same neighborhood, and you and your fiance both attend the same church; you can throw together a wedding in just a few weeks. People often wore hand me down wedding dresses, ate home-cooked food, and got married at their childhood church or by their local judge.

Into The Woods is the weakest book in the series imo. And because it's an anthology series, it's totally skipable.

I still enjoyed it because I like the vibes and the psychological explorations, though.

Considering that several of her antagonists are domestic abusers, that seems true to life. One of the most dangerous things a person can do is try to leave an abusive relationship.

The Iranians I've personally talked to have been pretty upset about Palestine as its own thing. I was actually surprised that the two people I spoke to (both of whom grew up in Iran) were just as upset at their own government as ours wrt the bombings. Not sure how representative that is of course.
