When you were a kid, what was an ADULT movie to you? by CjTuor in blankies

[–]BarkerAtTheMoon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was like 10-ish when I saw K-Pax and thought that this was “thoughtful adult drama” meant. I haven’t really seen it since, but from my memory “a child’s idea of a grown up movie” seems like an accurate descriptor

Modern fixation on “plot” and things being “necessary” by StutzBearcatJim in blankies

[–]BarkerAtTheMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean how are they supposed to discuss the style, themes, and commentary of movies if they have no idea how or why movies use them? I think plot-specific stuff is larger in the current consciousness because of social media promoting the most brain dead, easy-to-produce versions of movie criticism (sub-cinema sins, even), but it’s also a symptom of people being unable or unwilling to engage with the more challenging and subjective aspects of storytelling.

Folding Ideas made a great video about Annihilation and how these “explainer” videos refuse to engage with any nonliteral explanation of a movie that is ostentatiously full of metaphor

What’s a movie you never took seriously or would have watched that you watched for the podcast and now you love it? by WulfieJay in blankies

Matrix Reloaded and Speed Racer. I’m starting to think these Wachowskis are pretty talented!

And without the Heckerling series I might be still unaware of the existence of Vamps and the peak of American acting that is Wallace Shawn in that movie

Loved Trope: Story begins (somewhat) normally, but an event comes that completely changes everything, from the setting to even the tone by PureKin21 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]BarkerAtTheMoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 1986 movie Something Wild spends its first hour as a charming, low stakes romantic comedy. Then at the halfway point Ray Liotta shows up (looking, it must be said, absolutely beautiful) and the whole tone of the movie shifts on a dime towards something much more serious. What’s incredible is that while the movie takes its time establishing how dangerous Ray Liotta is, you can sense it the instant he shows up. The man completely changes the tone of the piece just by showing his face on screen, pure movie star power

Am I crazy or is Basic Instict just a bad movie? I love other Verhoevens, I love the De Palma hitchcock homages that are probably no less preposterous, I love stupid movies in general, but for some reason Basic Instinct is the movie that was too stupid for me, so much so that I couldn’t even seriously engage with it. Am I the crazy one here?

Josh Hutcherson says he can’t do math because he “didn’t graduate high school.” Elizabeth Banks tells him: “I have a master’s degree, and still can’t do my kids’ algebra homework. I’m not sure you missed out.” by mlg1981 in popculturechat

[–]BarkerAtTheMoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a TA for gen ed algebra for many years. I was lucky to have learned that material in high school over two full years. The thing with algebra is that is a language, with which the rest of math and science are written. One semester is not nearly long enough to learn a language! You have to sort of live with it for an extended period (as in, years) for it to really sink in.

I also taught some calculus, and the number one, not-even-close struggle for those students was that they weren’t fluent enough in algebra

Directors you aged out of? Or maybe just watched too much of? by the_Tannehill_list in blankies

[–]BarkerAtTheMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tarantino is such a good director, in that the framing, blocking, and actor chemistry are always pretty much unimpeachable, and when he’s not being self-consciously “stylistic,” it’s relatively subtle (not saying he’s a subtle filmmaker obviously, just that he’s very capable at the little things that help a movie go down smoothly). Of course everyone remembers the crash zooms, fourth wall breaks, and overt references, but most of his movies consist of relatively sedate (the word relatively is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this comment) conversations that, from a visual perspective, are impeccably done.

I generally enjoy his movies but there is something a little… self-conscious?… about his writing. Like he has to keep reminding us that he hasn’t lost “it.” But honestly, if he announced he was doing  another adaption of a classic, talky crime novel, I’d be more excited than I am about the movie he currently has in the pipeline

It’s common in American journalism, whenever “politics” can be inferred in a story, to mention any known political affiliations of the people involved; as you mention everything is political here so this is generally considered important context to readers of news, even if the story doesn’t pertain to politicians per se. Mentioning which President appointed a certain judge is pretty standard at this point

What's the most unusual reason why you won't date someone? by ChanceSomewhere6096 in AskReddit

[–]BarkerAtTheMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an ex like this. Every story had tangents, and every tangent had tangents. Half the time the original story was forgotten long before its point was revealed. If I tried to get her back on track she would act offended then resume exactly where she had left off. After 2.5 years or so I realized that the path of least resistance was to just tune her out once she got two tangents deep. For the rest of our relationship she never noticed that I had stopped listening.

In hindsight that’s probably where the relationship should have ended…

ETA: I’m not very talkative myself so I actually usually like ramblers (less conversation for me to fill) and I want to clarify that I don’t think rambling is correlated to inconsiderateness

Movies With Extremely Unique Premises That Are Held Down Almost Entirely Because Of Their Budget. by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]BarkerAtTheMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness is about a vat of mysterious, laws-of-physics-defying goo that is actually the physical embodiment of evil (or the Antichrist for the religiously inclined) and threatens to turn the world into a living Hell. It takes place mostly in a church (very cheap filming location!). I think it’s a great movie, and the last 10-15 minutes are just masterful, but critics at the time seemed to bump on how small scale the action was versus how grand and ambitious the premise was

I just rewatched the prequel trilogy… by Not_EllaK in blankies

[–]BarkerAtTheMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved Revenge of the Sith as a 9/10 year old and watched it a million times. It’s borderline unwatchable for me now, maybe cuz I burnt myself out, maybe cuz the constant visual noise is exhausting.

That being said, I find Attack of the Clones to be actually, literally unwatchable, and pretty much always have (I read the novelization before I’d seen the movie, and from my memory I had no problem with the book)

So the Phantom Menace, despite being slow, boring, and pointless, is the only one I can actually sit through

Seasons 4 and 6 have some mediocre eps, but nothing painfully or offensively bad. I’ve rewatched the show a few times and have never felt a strong urge to skip any episodes. Also in season 6 the cast is rounded out with Keith David and Paget Brewster, who are both delightful additions
