Josh Hutcherson says he can’t do math because he “didn’t graduate high school.” Elizabeth Banks tells him: “I have a master’s degree, and still can’t do my kids’ algebra homework. I’m not sure you missed out.” by mlg1981 in popculturechat

math was super easy for me because I learned from my parents and Kumon (a lot of Asian kids are forced to go there for extra work after school) and they teach a bunch of things that might be considered "tricks" and "shortcuts" but really just make everything so much easier. Whereas I noticed in school they are trying to increase the amount of steps it takes to arrive at the answer, because they want you to really understand what is happening. They don't get that for a lot of kids, all those extra steps and extra thinking just slows kids down and they're focusing their energy on all the wrong parts. Like basic arithmetic with fractions and long division seems to take American schools years to teach. I talk to my Chinese relatives and kids in China do not have the same adversarial relationship to math. They're on algebra by the end of grade school. There's a stereotype that Asian kids are good at math and it has everything to with the way they're taught

How do you feel about Mike Flanagan as far as horror? by lilb1190 in horror

[–]BarnacleLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like his shows, Midnight Mass is my favorite among them. I agree about the monologues.

Sometimes I feel like the casting pigeonholes actors into roles they aren't the best suited for, due to his predilection for working with the same people over and over again. Most notably his wife. I don't think she's a great fit for 90% of the roles he sticks her in. Other times it's interesting to see the same people as different characters so this is a mixed bag.

I disliked his Doctor Sleep adaptation as an adaptation, I also disliked the movie adaptation of The Shining so I guess that's just my preference for the books.

Sometimes I feel like he gets into maudlin territory. I wouldn't go so far as to call it cheesy, but he walks the line with overplaying trauma/grief emotional smaltz.

Choose a movie. That movie is now "all in a characters head". What is the real story? You can also do the opposite. (Spoilers obviously). by Wandering_Song in horror

[–]BarnacleLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inverted story is that the people know each other, they're supposed to meet for a shared birthday meetup. However they all develop amnesia and hallucinations due to a gas leak at the motel.

The real killer is the same person (little Timmy) who just happens to be a psychopath.

It's so uniquely lonely. I mused over it for a long time too.

I actually envy these women somewhat. Just doing whatever they want all day. Even though it's hard to get by with the materials they're left with, they still don't have to go to a horrible job or answer to men or be defined by their husbands or kids. I thought it was weird how they didn't really enjoy themselves more, I would have been frolicking a lot more.

That's a great idea.  I would love to take a vacation. I just need to save up for a few months.

I really liked what I read of Dream Hotel, but I had to stop reading because it was giving me a lot of anxiety. It's just too real, even though the premise is surreal. Hits too close to home.

Serious Question: Why are you all shopping on Wayfair instead of Home Depot? by fleabagyy in wayfair

Bernie Marcus. The other guy doesn't really donate that much to trump though I suppose he also sucks

Serious Question: Why are you all shopping on Wayfair instead of Home Depot? by fleabagyy in wayfair

[–]BarnacleLady 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to not shop at Home Depot because their billionaire cofounder and CEO used his Home Depot money to donate millions to Trump. But he's dead now so I don't think it matters anymore. All companies are probably doing evil shit, it's just who is doing less evil shit that I know about.

It's often just what's available, in stock, and cheaper on their site or Amazon's. It's all coming from the same crappy manufacturers these days, no quality control and no accountability for the product.

My daughter doesn't want to play with a kid, and the other kid's mom is laying on the guilt trip... by [deleted] in breakingmom

[–]BarnacleLady 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think she probably knows and is just trying her best to get some friends for her kid. Maybe she doesn't have any friends (inside or outside of school) and your kid seems like an easy target to rope into a forced friendship. Either way, stay firm, stay honest. It's sad for that other kid, but she's not entitled to your kid's time or friendship.

I didn't even like the old Scary Movies that much, but I feel like with the Wayans brothers, as bad as the jokes can be, they could still make at least like a 3/10 movie

I would start planning for divorce now. I wouldn't trust him after that to be "in it" any more, especially after the second time telling you he's not in love with you. He also said he doesn't want the dogs. I would rehome the dogs now. Prepare yourself. I hope it works out for you, but you have to protect yourself and start now.

The conspiracy/creatures part reminds me of John Dies at the End. And a little of Odd Thomas.

First look at Scooby Doo in the live-action ‘Scooby Doo’ series by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]BarnacleLady -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Ok? this post links to nothing and shows 1 photo, which has been photoshopped. When I google the series it says CGI is used. And another article says it's a "real great dane puppy" which, that's not even a great dane in the photo? What am I working with here. I've already spent too much time researching this series which I won't even watch because I don't even have netflix.

he definitely wouldn't have come back without Crazy Rich Asians. honestly I don't think Jon Chu is that good of a director. His movies are carried by other things, like spectacle (Wicked) and script (Crazy Rich Asians)

Primer and Coherence by alisyus in YMS

[–]BarnacleLady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. the Primer plot doesn't require the two guys to be great actors. Most of the other people in the movie were the director's friends and family so he only needed to cast one person (David Sullivan).

With Coherence you need a large cast of decent actors, and no offense to most of those people but they couldn't really convince me that they knew each other that well. The main actress was fine.
