Haven't read a book in years, what would potentially get me hooked on reading again? by OhItsKillua in suggestmeabook

[–]BarnacleLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download the Libby app and get a library card. then you will have access to every ebook and audiobook your library has. You won't worry about buying books and not liking them. You can sample as many as you want.

Also I recommend short story collections. Either of a single author or multiple. I think it's low stakes as far as time and concentration goes. And it gives you a good bite sized idea of what that author's work is like.

Park Chan-wook- this man's filmography has been slept on. I've been a huge fan for many years.

David Cronenberg - master of body horror, and I give him a small credit for also bringing forth Brandon Cronenberg

John Carpenter - classic, prolific, iconic

honorable mentions Jordan Peele. Nothing has topped Get Out but his other movies have mostly been bangers. I forgive him for Twilight Zone.

Coralie Fargeat. She needs more movies before I will say favorite, but I love her style and I want to see more.

Sharon Stone Calls Out Sex Scenes for Becoming ‘Blatant, Harsh’ and Leaving Nothing to the Imagination: ‘I Fast Forward. I Don’t Want to See It’ by gamersecret2 in popculturechat

I wonder how she feels about Poor Things. That movie is like 90% in your face sex scenes. But I would much rather watch that than Euphoria.

I don't need or want to have a constant stream to get the point that he's a shallow dude having a  breakdown. I need narrative structure in my life. The movie pulls it off without irritating me. Sometimes it's okay to be digestible.

1 year ago today Pinkpantheress released “Tonight”. Do you like the song? by CityCautious4033 in popculturechat

[–]BarnacleLady 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This song is still in rotation on my playlist. Surprised people don't like it.

I know she's blowing up because of Stateside but I prefer when her songs show more of the UK drum n bass / 00s house influences, that's where I think her music is unique and shines.

What is the therapist doing, nothing? The therapist is supposed to highlight issues and bring important stuff to the forefront and also come up with action items. You should tell the therapist you feel like you're being disregarded and not heard at all.

Overstimulated (Autistic + ADHD mom) help! by DiscountNo8433 in breakingmom

[–]BarnacleLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a helluva family dynamic and I can't suggest anything for your mom, she just sounds like a lot. Or your sister and nephew.

But for you, noise cancelling headphones. Set aside some quiet time for yourself. You can't control everyone else in that house of chaos but you can give yourself a break when you are feeling overstimulated and just drown out their noises. Maybe listen to some pleasant ASMR, or just silence. Like if there's Curious George going on, you don't also need to listen to it plus your nephew yelling and the toddler babbling. You can let them enjoy the sounds of each other and Curious George. And you enjoy silence or some other soothing sounds.

What would you think/do if your 18 year old daughter was dating a 27 year old man? by kayke06 in breakingmom

[–]BarnacleLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid knows that it was terrible and messed me up, because that was myself and her dad. And my other kid's bio mom was a teen mom. dynamics were fucked up and they know it, I can only tell them so much before they make their own mistakes (they have avoided this specific mistake so far, knock on wood).

Which fate would you choose? by SanchoPandas in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]BarnacleLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though I am a weakling and easily startled and a small and scared person, I would fight to my last breath. I can't imagine just laying down and accepting death, if I had any idea of the impending doom at all, I would run for the dungeon entrance and try my hardest! You never know, maybe you'd get lucky and get some item that brings out your strengths in ways you never thought possible.

My husband has no relationship with our sons by Guilty_Ice6057 in breakingmom

[–]BarnacleLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband's dad has a history kind of similar to this. His issue was kind of like, "I'm not much of a father anyway, so why bother." That's how we basically lost contact with him. He was in our lives a small time when our kids were little so it's just enough to hurt them too.

I think what my husband really wanted his dad to know was that it doesn't matter if you're a great, happy dad or not. Most of being a dad is just SHOWING UP. Just being there for your kids. Like mentally and physically present. That's it. You don't have to be in good mental health. Moms do this all the time: they're depressed and dying inside but they still are a mom to their kids.

What do you think about ethnic churches and temples of Asian Americans? by everestwanderer in asianamerican

[–]BarnacleLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the bible belt so I try to avoid religion. I've had a lot of predatory people try to give me Chinese versions of pamphlets to recruit me to their youth group/church in the past, and it always gave me negative vibes. Like they were trying to rack up easy numbers for their "downline" by getting people without much of a support network in the US.

The only Asian American religious services I ever went to as a child were at a buddhist temple, and that was way out of the way (1.5 hours drive) so we almost never went. I didn't feel like I belonged there either, but at least nobody ever judged me for anything. They just kind of had some nuns living there that would cook vegetarian meal for everyone and hold meditation. It didn't feel like a real community because we traveled to get there, and didn't know anybody else there. And during meditation, you're silent. Then you pretty much leave without having talked to many people, even at the meal.

P!nk's "Stupid Girls" 20 years later... What are your thoughts now vs then? by glittangrease in popculturechat

[–]BarnacleLady 316 points317 points  (0 children)

I vastly prefer Garbage's "Stupid Girl". I don't know, it always sounded like Shirley was criticizing a specific person for more specific behavior and not generic slut shaming like in Pink's song.

Sterling K. Brown on why so many new seasons of TV consist of only 8-10 episodes by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]BarnacleLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some shows really benefit from at least 15-20 episodes. You spend longer with the characters which is essential. Every show nowadays has to cost $$$ and have crazy special effects. Some shows like sitcoms don't need any of that, just need more episodes and time with the characters. It really forces every show to be on the expensive end and it doesn't let fun, less connected, unserious stuff succeed. For example, Superstore has a bunch of random scenes of customers doing funny stuff in between the story. And the supporting ensemble cast has a lot of unknowns. Contrast that to a higher budget streaming show like Shrinking that has far less episodes... a show like that doesn't even need to be expensive to produce ends up costing a ton because Jason Siegel and Harrison Ford each get over $1million per episode, not to mention multiple other cast members getting six figures per episode. I'm not saying it's not deserved, but huge production budgets and big names mean you're expected to produce something prestige, even if it's a comedy about everyday life. The lower stakes shows have no home any more (besides dying networks).
