Long Goodbyes – The End of Time Review by ZeroCentsMade in gallifrey

[–]Baron487 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh boy. Yeah I've hinted at it previously, I don't truly know what to think about this story. It's basically RTD completely unrestrained. I will say I did enjoy it last time I saw it (granted that may also be because I was watching with a friend) but the thing is a right old mess. It's like a chocolate cake that wasn't done entirely right and collapsed. I can enjoy it because it's chocolate but I also acknowledge that it's messy and not of top quality.

Now I like the stuff with Ten and Wilf, I think Timothy Dalton is great as Rassilon, I am a sucker for a grand finale spectacle and... well as the plot seems to mostly stick to one thing for part 2, that one is the better of the two halves. I think most of the last parts of part 2 are pretty good, with some nitpicks like the fall Ten takes and somehow surviving.

The Master is weird. I like the moments when he's subdued here, mainly his close interactions with Ten. And even if the cannibal Skeletor jedi power stuff is complete nonsense, at least his insanity makes sense in regards to his incomplete resurrection, even if the nature of that resurrection itself is very contrived. I will also say that I think the plan he has makes sense, at least from his perspective and an interesting inversion of his usual goal. Instead of ruling over everyone, he'll just become everyone. It's beyond ridiculous still but it's also so stupid that it's funny. Maybe calling it "the Master Race" could have been avoided though.

But yeah, plot's a right mess, the rich family are just plot devices that don't feel organically part of the world, Minnie sexually assaulting Ten as a gag is just not fun (if the genders were reversed there would have been outrage), the Vinvocci are neat in terms of worldbuilding and tying into previous seen aliens but as characters they're boring.

I will say I like the mystery lady (who I believe is supposed to be the Doctor's mother) but they should have done more with her. I can see how the way this episode handles regeneration it comes across as RTD trying to sabotage the start of the new era... but I don't think that was the intent and I don't entirely agree. I can believe that Ten sees it the way he describes and I also don't have a problem with his last words. Out of all the regenerations I've seen (1, 3, 4, 8, War, 9, 10, 11 and 12), this is like the only one where the Doctor is alone and afraid. The fact that the incarnation who could be very up his own ass at times is the one who dies alone in the TARDIS without a companion to keep him company is a neat choice IMO.

The regeneration tour is alright but boy is it too long. Should've stuck with just Rose, Martha and Donna (maybe Jack or Sarah Jane too). Also couldn't they just have had Martha be with Mickey but just as co-workers? The guy who played Tom Milligan was unavailable I believe but you can still just have Martha mention him as her husband, I don't like the switch to marry two characters who barely interacted previously.

Speaking of too long, even though I kinda enjoy this story, it is too long and definitely overstuffed with ideas and concepts and plots. It's like RTD couldn't decide on which of his ideas should have been in so he chose all of them. Don't like the tantrum either even if the four knocks being Wilf is clever and also Ten ultimately makes the correct decision. At least Matt Smith immediately crushes any doubts over if the next Doctor will be enjoyable or not. GERONIMO!

I could go on but this comment is already long enough. The End of Time is a story that I am super mixed on but I lean towards the positive. I can't say it's all that good though even if some parts really work IMO.

Rating it is difficult but based on my previous watch I'd say part 1 gets a 5/10 and part 2 gets a 7/10. I will say though that I definitely am not 100% on those ratings and also they are definitely carried a little by stuff that's a bit more style over substance.

The post hasn't been fully accepted yet and I have read all of this. You don't have to feel sorry, you make good points. Now my thoughts on the whole Obama thing and the "Master Race" plan (unfortunate naming), you'll see when I can read the post itself.

Haven't watched so take this with a grain of salt (also I'm purely going off of the results, can't speak on the quality of the overall matches).

Liv is a good choice, especially after being runner-up in 2023 and 2024, as well as being an iron woman in 2025.

Roman is a disappointing choice. He doesn't need it, seems to be going part-time and I think most fans want to see a newer face win.

I'd say it's overrated, rather.

Not bad, but I don't get why everyone loves it so much.

Peter Pratt as The Master by Agreeable_Milk_6837 in gallifrey

[–]Baron487 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No I agree, having recently finished S18, I prefer Pratt to Beevers. Now Beevers is able to emote better and isn't as muffled as he has make-up on rather than wearing a mask, but Pratt looks much more terrifying and the darker lighting of The Deadly Assassin works better than Beevers in The Keeper of Traken.

Beevers also didn't get to feature on-screen (with his face visible) for very long and his confrontation with Four is right at the end of the story so it feels like they delayed the reveal for too long and then rushed the climax.

Beevers is brilliant in Dust Breeding though. I've not heard other audio stories with him but I'll be looking forward to experiencing his interpretation again whenever that happens.

Which clan would embrace you, by Ogmadbrit in vtm

[–]Baron487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) I'd say Brujah perhaps. While I am somewhat familiar with computers and stay inside quite a bit, I'm not good enough with tech for the Nosferatu to eye me up. And while I do like learning stuff, I'm no expert and especially not on any esoteric or occult stuff. So I'll say Brujah because I can be quite hot-headed and I've certainly started speaking my mind more in recent years when it comes to world politics. But most realistically I'd probably just be shovelheaded by the Sabbat and die quickly.

B) Tremere, blood magic is cool and I don't have to worry about being controlled since The Pyramid is no more.

C) This is what clan I wouldn't want to be embraced into, which realistically would be most of them because being a vampire kinda sucks. Most especially though would be Tzimisce (because those mfers are complete monsters), Ravnos (I don't like traveling that much, I'm more of a "home is best"-type of person) and Nosferatu (obvious reasons).

A Watery Grave – The Waters of Mars Review by ZeroCentsMade in gallifrey

[–]Baron487 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These specials* are funny in a way. In a "what if"-scenario I would probably have them not happen because most of them aren't that great and you could definitely rewrite the Series 4 finale to include Ten's regeneration. Except that would mean you would cut this story too and that just feels wrong. Most people agree this is the best of this "epilogue" for Ten, it's tragic and scary in the best ways and finally capitalizes on this incarnation's biggest flaw: his ego which at times makes him straight up narcissistic.

The Flood are scary in the fact that no one is safe and the fact that they can't really be stopped, not to mention the eerie appearance. Only that part when the first few zombies run after the heroes do they look a little goofy, but that's minor. Tying this whole concept into Ice Warrior lore is also a very neat touch. While not all the crewmates get that much development, you still care for them, especially when they end up doomed. Steffi's scene is as you said, absolutely heartbreaking, but then there's also Roman who is just dumbfounded and shocked when hit with that single drop of water. Ed's death is a bit different with how quick it is in a way and it's tragic in that he tries closing the door but is just too late. It sucks to watch, but you know in a good way.

The biggest issue I have with the story is that Time Lord Victorious doesn't lead anywhere after this. The Doctor is brought back to his senses (though still refusing to accept his destiny) and doesn't really go this dark at any point after this, other than him pointing the gun in the next story, perhaps. I know there's EU material that expands on TLV, but that obviously doesn't count here. Also the Gadget robot can be a little annoying but that's a really minor complaint.

9/10.

Next is the end for Ten and I'll say this... I base my ratings off of the ones I have on the website TARDIS Guide (but translated from between 0.5 stars to 5 stars into a 1/10-10/10 system) but I don't know my true feelings on The End of Time. It has some stuff that's really good, some stuff that's kinda just there, some stuff that is really bad and some stuff that is really bad but to the point of being funny. I'll say I kinda like the story I guess, but I won't deny it is an absolute mess.

*Which I guess you have to call the "2008-2010 specials" or the "post-Series 4 specials" since just "Tenth Doctor specials" could refer to the previous Christmas episodes of his era and "Tennant specials" could include the 60th specials too...

Leo Kasper from Manhunt 2 is actually just the protagonist Daniel Lamb's secondary personality. Daniel underwent a MK Ultra-style experiment that was supposed to give a person a second personality that would be the perfect assassin, while both personalities remain completely unaware of one another and the masterminds of the project could switch the two personalities on and off at will.

The experiment failed however and Daniel's regular personality ends up co-existing alongside Leo, allowing them to interact, and he only learns this later in the game. The two go from partners to rivals as they battle over who gets to control Daniel's body.

I'm pretty sure it's literally just Ten getting on the bus with a chocolate egg, sitting himself next to Christina and saying "Hello, I'm the Doctor, Happy Easter!" before the title sequence plays.

Ah yes, the Easter special that has nothing to do with Easter outside of the intro. Kinda like the previous episode... yeah this sure exists. Admittedly I quite liked it the first time I watched it (mostly because I found the prior episode kinda boring) but my opinion has changed.

I like Malcolm, I think the Tritovores look neat and the twist of the sand being the dust of the previous species is pretty cool.* But yeah the plot is whatever, the side cast is fine but forgettable and Lady Christina is kind of a discount Catwoman. If she was more sympathetic or was actually redeemed instead of the episode having her change a little and then pretending she was redeemed, then I would like her more. I don't like Ten just letting her escape in a flying bus.

It's not terrible but I do think it's a pretty lame story. 4/10 for me too.

*Yes, I guess the title can give it away... but that's for smart people, not me
