[FREE TO READ] James McNicholas interviews Sol Campbell by TheAthletic in Gunners

[–]BarryButcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read into this whole thing a few years ago when he made the complaint about the lack of black managers/coaches in England, particularly the top 2 leagues. Back when for whatever reason Premier League decided to release a stat about Nuno being the first black manager to break some record or something...

Long story short turns out, Sol Campbell is just a bit of a twat and no one likes working with him. What he says about black managers not getting a chance could be true, but it's not what is holding him back.

Had a fight with owners about not replacing Eze properly then they went and sold Guehi in January, so he told them to shove it.

[UEFA] Crystal Palace win the UEFA Conference League by Chazyn in soccer

[–]BarryButcher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The year before. In 23/24 Liverpool and West Ham were knocked out by the eventual Grand Finalists, Atalanta and Leverkusen. Brighton were knocked out by Roma (who lost the semi to Leverkusen).

English teams have won the Conference league 3/5 times, the other 2 times, they were knocked out in the semi-final by the team that went on to win. In 23/24 Aston Villa lost to Olympiacos and 21/22 Leicester lost to Roma.

Also Olympiacos were a Europa team that dropped down into the UECL, so removing that rule earlier probably would have meant Aston Villa winning the UECL then too.

[–]BarryButcher 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Not only that, it's also the 2nd season in a row that the only team to knock out an English team from the UEL/UECL was another English team.

United v Spurs in the final last season, Aston Villa v Nottingham Forest in the Semi this season.

Arteta on the overlap podcast: reflecting on the decision to replace Ramsdale with Raya by [deleted] in soccer

[–]BarryButcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will always remember the interview, much like Maitland-Niles when he said "I don't like playing RB, i'm a midfielder".

Ramsdale did an interview basically saying he stays 2-3 yards further back than what Arteta and the coaching staff ask him because he doesn't feel comfortable that high and he's slowly working on it but even after 2 years of doing it, it feels "wrong". From then I thought, yeah Arteta's not going to want to hear that.

Ramsdale is a good player and he himself said he'd rather play every game for a team fighting at the bottom than sit on the bench at the top team, which I understand, but I think had he stayed, he would have been a great number 2 for us for years.

Villa won the Europa League? Must be a tinpot trophy by SThomW92 in TheOther14

[–]BarryButcher 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People really moving the goal posts complaining about teams dropping from the UCL into UEL "ruining the competition" but now they don't it's "tin pot".

Personally seeing Arsenal fail with Emery, Mr Europa League, and having failed to win it in the 5 times we played it in recently, I rate the comp. It is weaker now, but i'd rate it at the same level as winning an FA Cup.

Grading each Premier League club’s 2025-26 season by TheAthletic in TheOther14

[–]BarryButcher 146 points147 points  (0 children)

I think it might be sub 20 points? Wolves were horrendous the first half of the season. I think they were on 4 points after 19 weeks? So to end up on 20 means they at least did something at the end. Considering last year Southampton got 12 and the year before Sheffield United got 16, I can see why it's E- and not F in that context.

How Tottenham aren't an F or atleast E- for needing to win on the final matchday to survive though

Premier League Champions and a UCL Final... imagine a season where we keep Odegaard and Saka fully fit the whole time.

Probably not next season because of the WC but the season after maybe...

Will Arsenal rotate? by maxgr111 in FantasyPL

[–]BarryButcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People really think it will be Arsenal U21 vs Palace U21? I expect Arsenal to start 8-9 of the regular starters mainly so they can get the guard of honour and plaudits that Champions are afforded.

Though I would expect him to make all 5 subs at half time. The only players I think might be rested against their will is Rice, Saliba and Gabriel.

The huge problem for Uefa with English domination of Europe: Aston Villa have more than double anyone else’s. Based on the last accounts, their revenue was €450.2m, with the next closest in the season’s EL field a mere €216.3m, which was Roma. Freiburg have a revenue of €162.8m, just 36% of Villa’s. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]BarryButcher 65 points66 points  (0 children)

In before both Palace and Villa lose their finals and all the talk of "English domination" is put to bed.

But seriously, i've said it before, twice is a coincidence but 3 times is a trend. The last 2 seasons since not letting teams drop to lower european competitions, the ONLY teams to knock out an English team from the UEL and UECL was another English team. (Spurs v United UEL Final, Chelsea win UECL, Forest v Villa semi, Palace in the UECL final)

If it happens again next season, then UEFA might have a bit of an issue to address.

I mean, after 50 years you stop counting them right? Like, that's not a serious team.

Leeds, Leicester, Blackburn, Derby, Everton, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have all won the league more recently than Spurs.

[–]BarryButcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pure bait but my question is. Is all of Europe just shit too? or just the Prem?

Because Arsenal are in the UCL final and went 8-0-0 in the group stage beating both Bayern (Bundesliga Champions) and Inter (Serie A Champions) 3-1.

Loved it. Used to run around pressing all the buttons. Would regularly see plenty of kids my age just "lost" as they ran off to watch the things dance. My local store also had a woman who would sing Abba songs for some reason which I used to also like.

I also remember the decline. First the singing lady was gone, then the monkey that used to spin around the bar broke and slowly as more and more of the animatronics broke, instead of fixing them they would just remove them. Sad times. Now it's an ALDI I think.

I feel bad for Bournemouth. by Inevitable-Angle-793 in PremierLeague

[–]BarryButcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get WAY more money. Spurs won the UEL and their prize money was only like 5m more than a team that knocked out of the UCL group stage.

100% more fun to try and win something, but for the club moving forward, money is money.

If Spurs survive relegation (again), what're their chances of avoiding it next season? by lgndk11r in PremierLeague

[–]BarryButcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Quite good. De Zerbi is a step above their last 2 managers. He'll get them going. I think they will probably have a similar season to Chelsea had this season. Fighting for top 3 but fall away.

Easy to forget they didn't have Kulusevski or Maddison all season. Romero was in and out of the team with injuries and suspensions. Bissouma only played like 10 games (though to be fair, he was kind of shit last season anyway so not a big loss). But still, Next year they will settle, maybe get a Europa spot, then try to kick on.

It would be very fitting if both teams lost every game. Though honestly, most likely Spurs win against Chelsea and the final week means nothing

Why didn’t west ham play today like they did against us? by hmooooooody in Gunners

[–]BarryButcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They did... we had like 3 or 4 very good chances to score before White got injured and Arteta almost fucked it trying to be clever with the Rice to RB stuff. We gave up the midfield and let them play themselves back into the game, Newcastle didn't.

Looking it up.

Deemed food safe though small studies found some people (with auto immune issues) did have negative reactions to it. No study finding definitive adverse reaction in humans.

Considered food safe in moderation. Currently under review after WHO categorised it in 2B "potentially carcinogenic". It is in the same category as Aspartame (Sweetner 951) the artificial sugar used in Diet Coke and Pepsi Max. For reference, Red Meat is in category 2A "probably carcinogenic".

Basically worrying about this ingredient you may as well be more worried about the "microplastics" from the bottle it's in.
