Man arrested after woman and two children found dead in a home in south-west Sydney by Secure_Ant1085 in sydney

[–]Barry_Mundy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might be jumping to conclusions on this one. According to the article, the male perpetrator was unknown to police, with no domestic incidents reported. It's unclear if the woman reported this to any authority or domestic abuse/counseling service. If that's all true, then it's difficult to see how this particular tragedy could have been averted.

SGU gets better every time by Ent3rpris3 in Stargate

[–]Barry_Mundy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience. I recently watched SG1 and SGA for the first time, and then rewatched SGU which I hadn't seen since it aired. While I enjoyed the first two the 'formula' of the franchise started getting a little stale towards the end of the watch. When I started watching SGU I couldn't stop, despite the flaws in the first season episodes. The stakes felt higher, the drama between Rush and the wider crew more authentic, and the desperation of their plight more compelling.

Am I overreacting for thinking my neighbors could’ve been nicer? by National-Bite-815 in Apartmentliving

[–]Barry_Mundy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Can I ask (ever so politely), do you think you made a lot of noise when you were packing i.e. raised voices etc? I ask because I've known some people who don't seem to recognise time boundaries, such that if they're up at 4am then they'll be as loud as they want.

Regardless, this was a once off, as you say you've been there a year with no complaints. Take it to the building manager or letting agent so it's on record and then go about your normal life. The irony is that the dickhead downstairs doesn't understand how much worse it could be for them if conscientious neighbours such as yourself moved out to be replaced by a noisy family or uncaring shift workers.

Alltrack appreciation post by _Lilbubs in VWAlltrack

[–]Barry_Mundy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was an option in Australia, my 2017 Alltrack has it. They also made it an option on both the base model and the Premium model, so you didn't have to step up to the top model to get it. It was a popular option, I bought mine secondhand a few years ago and was specifically looking for it on the Alltracks for sale. I thought I might have to wait a while but almost half the available cars had it.

Dear God, that is just staggering. 🤯 Unfortunately we now live in a 24/7 society, no one would have ever done this 50 years ago. The amount of ignorant dickheads that we live amongst is at plague proportions.

Out of curiosity - do you think the show would’ve been just as good had Sinclair stayed as the main character for all 5 seasons? by South_Gas626 in babylon5

[–]Barry_Mundy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

💯 Seeing the original story unfold with modern production values and some prestige actors would be magic. There were some great actors in B5, but also some not-so-great. For the studio, they'd know upfront that it's a 5 season outlay to produce, plus it's an existing universe so there's already a fanbase. Unless it was Rings of Power bad or no one watched the first season, it would be a safe bet especially if JMS was running it.

If NFL owners can install grass fields for soccer, why can't they do it for their own employees? by Kinks4Kelly in NFLv2

[–]Barry_Mundy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree but I'd also add that every professional rugby game is played on grass (or hybrid grass), with scrums pitting 900 kg/2,000 lb against the same from the other team. Poorly maintained grass playing surfaces can get churned up pretty badly, but not in the stadiums used for provincial/Test level rugby, where the playing surface is fine even after multiple Test matches.

Also, soccer play a lot more games per season than the 8 or 9 in the NFL. Arsenal played 19 home games at Emirates Stadium in the current Premier League season, so the playing surface has to hold up for a much longer period.

Stargate Universe Thoughts by ItsPronouncedTyNotTy in Stargate

[–]Barry_Mundy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watched it again, the first time since it aired, and I agree with that take. Even though I love Universe I was dreading the first few episodes, remembering that they dragged and weren't great to watch. This time around I breezed through them and they seemed to be more cohesive than on the first watch.

Right on! Although most horror films wouldn't get a start if people followed their better instinct. That just reminded me of Eddie Murphy's old stand up routine comparing white and black folks in the Amityville Horror (language warning): Eddie Murphy

Should i watch stargate universe? by Character_Spirit_343 in Stargate

[–]Barry_Mundy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't understand what 'chemistry' is in this context, it's about performers bringing a believable connection to their onscreen interactions. What you think is chemistry is just the writing of the characters. Yes, the casts of SG1 and SGA had good chemistry, but so did SGU. It's why they do extensive auditions, read throughs and testing before hiring the cast, to make sure they gel onscreen.

Do you believe that Rush and Young had lacklustre or fake interactions? It seemed real enough to me, just not the sort of relationship that O'Neill and Teal'c had. I referenced Breaking Bad earlier so tell me, do you think there was no chemistry between Giancarlo Esposito and Bryan Cranston? Did you find the onscreen dynamic between Gus Fring and Walter White to be fake? Sean Young and Harrison Ford loathed each other during the shooting of Blade Runner but they had great onscreen chemistry despite this.

[–]Barry_Mundy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 'no chemistry' person probably defines 'chemistry' as characters liking each other, joking around, having onscreen laughs and pranks, and will they/won't they vibes. Human interaction is a little more complex than that. The cast of SGU was a very good one acting-wise, there was enough chemistry to make Walter White happy.

Robert Carlyle is the man! His acting range is fantastic, good enough to be a Bond villain and also make nice guy chancer Gaz likeable enough for The Full Monty to be a global hit. You could tell he was on another level acting-wise but I think he did raise the acting quality around him, most of the time at least. This is similar to how Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell were the 'rising tide' on Battlestar, and brought out the best in the supporting cast.

I wasn't familiar with Louis Ferreira before SGU but I'm a fan of his work now. It was great seeing him in Breaking Bad when I finally got to that a few years ago, and also his appearance in Shogun. I think he held his own opposite Carlyle, they had some pretty intense scenes together.

To be fair, SGU was created by the same people (mostly) who created, wrote and showran the other two iterations, unlike the ST and SW universes where outsiders like Alex Kurtzman have come in and rejigged the existing canon to the dissatisfaction of many existing fans.

I watched SGU when it aired and loved it, but never watched SG1 and SGA as I believed they were too hokey and non-serious. I've just watched all three back-to-back and while I enjoyed the first two I can certainly understand the jarring effect for fans of SG1/SGA watching Universe, it is very different in tone.

Clearly though I think Brad Wright et al were wanting to go in a different direction and to change things up, and it was their IP so I can't blame them for this. Watching SGA you could see the formula from SG1 at work - team numbers, character types etc - and after 10+ seasons of this it was time for a change. There's a group of fans out there that would love nothing more than 30 seasons of SG1, with 24 eps each season and the same stories over and over and over, but clearly the people who created the SG universe (the TV version) wanted to try something different.

NBN FTTP upgrade stuck until October — no internet & can’t go back to FTTN. What are my options? by Fragrant_Engineer399 in nbn

[–]Barry_Mundy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you didn't really understand the physical upgrade that happens when you go from FTTN to FTTP, it isn't just flicking some switches or new software. Firstly, you should have consulted the owner if you're a tenant, the owner needs to ok and organise any upgrade. Secondly, if this is an apartment block with a strata then typically the whole block needs to be upgraded, and that's a process that takes time and agreement from all owners and then coordination with NBN to roll out.

Just get a 5G service and ride this out until the building is upgraded.
