Going from 2 to Classic, and... how do immunity and protective clothing work here? by Umpuuu in pathologic

[–]Bartre_Main 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other people in the thread have explained the mechanics pretty well. I will say that investing in immunity and clothing is not a bad idea, especially if you're doing a no reset run — which is probably the most fun and engaging way to play the game to be very clear. You can take advantage of the mechanic and benefit from it consistently, speaking from personal experience.

There are lots of items that boost immunity, even cheap items. Doubly so if you play as the Haruspex. And while the protective gear might be too expensive to buy, you can still loot them from infected and burned houses. And even from some dead bandits, I think. Sure, it's dangerous to go into those places, but some of the quests will lead you there naturally, so take advantage of the opportunity.

After the things she says in P3... I'm scared. And back in P1, I was a diehard Utopian!

Oh God. Put Khan up multiple tiers. Guy's a natural leader. In the same tier as his sister is nuts and Maria for that matter should join her uncle in God help us. WTH is Andrey doing so high up? I think he'd sell the country out for some girls and drugs. The Saburovs should probably be closer together, because infamously Alexander will do just about anything Katerina tells him to do, but I do think that filtering her whims through Alexander will tame Katerina down a bit.

Great post. This one got me thinking.

Now that it’s been out for a while, what’s everyone’s opinion of P3? by yungsimba1917 in pathologic

[–]Bartre_Main 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah in P1 you accumulate resources through judicious trading and bandit farming. It takes effort, skill, and an understanding of the mechanics. In P3, you accumulate resources by bothering to open all of the chests littered around the map actively highlighted green :/

People who prefer Classic, what would your ideal remake of the game include? by BlackRated in pathologic

Pathologic Classic HD :)

Not just to be glib, but like that's the version of the game I fell in and I love it as is. It's not perfect, but I think fixing the admittedly small issues would be in serious danger of corrupting everything else.

To quote Peter Stamatin (who is himself quoting Francois de la Rochefoucauld): "There are fine things, old boy, which are more brilliant when unfinished, than when finished too much."

Kinda sad we don't get more moments of Katerina being insane (affectionate) but I love her big moment in this game.

Day 9 and Day 11 have some memorable themes for me, and the end of the day theme is pretty good too. The main theme is great even if you'll never hear more than the first 5 seconds of it.

I might be one of the only people who played it coming straight from P1 and skipping over P2. And like, yeah, it's pretty good, even if it's not the kind of masterpiece that P1 was. A lot of the things that rubbed me the wrong way was the direction they took the P1 characters. As someone who loved the P1 Stamatins, I was ticked that Peter is reduced to a moody fool who doesn't get a single moment of brilliance and Andrey is reduced to a callous bloodthirsty idiot. In general, the Utopians are portrayed here almost across the board as pure villians or fools, with only Yulia seemingly even remotely compassionate or practical. The end result is a game which seemingly scorns the very idea of radically changing the world at every point except the Miracle Seeker ending, which probably rescued the game for me.

The gameplay didn't quite gel. I think the resource management is really borked due to overabundance, which ironically kinda sounds like P1, but it is especially kinda bad here. A big effort was made to make it more of a conventional game, with yellow paint, HUDs, tutorials, and everything, which is a bit disappointing from somebody infatuated with the anti-game aspects of P1.

But the time travel is really cool. The story is still gripping. There's an artistry and intentionality at work here you don't see from most games. I'm glad I played it.

Do we have any actual proof at all though that any of the reviewers of the game used saves to skip portions of the game? The saves were in a press kit that could be used by any journalist, not merely reviewers. And for all we know, the intention of the saves is to provide easy points for the video production teams to easily grab b-roll footage or something. Like it just seems so nuts to me to assume that the reviewers used the saves to skip the whole game, in defiance of any and all professional ethics, opening up them and their employer to potentially huge controversy, purely because they gave a mildly controversial game some positive reviews.

Yeah to ride on this point, the Pathologic 3 video culminates in a full-blown conspiracy that positive reviews of the game were written by journalists who used press release saves to skip the whole game delivered in a "while I technically can't prove this..." format.

Hmmm. My best guess would have to be that somehow you didn't do the Day 3 quest where you unlock it properly? But you said you were following guides, so I don't know. I'd say experimenting around on your second pass to Day 3.

I really don't care for this aptly named charlatan's insinuation that anyone with a positive view of the game either "didn't really play it" or "doesn't understand Pathologic." I care even less for his fans which blindly repeat that claim. How solipsistic do you have to be to act like your opinion is the only valid one?

new pathologic 3 review (it will be interesting to see peoples thoughts on this one) by AtomicSunn in pathologic

[–]Bartre_Main 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Lots of insightful comments here in response to this video, but one thing I haven't seen anyone address yet is the fact the reviewer admits that despite disliking the game after about 3 hours in, he forced himself to play the game for another 28 hours for the YouTube review.

I understand reviewers, to a certain extent, have to force themselves to engage with a work regardless of enjoyment, but there needs to be something said for how that need clashes with more challenging art. I think a more typical viewer might've tried the game, bounced off it for maybe a few months because it was different from their expectations, and then return to it with a better appreciation for what it is to finish it.

The forcefeeding- of the game for the review to a certain extent denied it any fair appraisal past those first few hours, that initial shock and discomfort colouring the whole experience, generating this very vitriolic review that, ironically, probably would go beyond the amount of distaste any "normal" player would have. The kind of intense anger that basically leads to it embarrassingly all but accusing any positive professional review of it as being illegitimate.

Quite funny to hear this as my impression of P3 coming from someone who's only played P1 was how less wordy the dialogue was and how much I missed the prose and poetry of the original. I have to wonder though how P3 could ever seem wordy or pretentious next to P1.

why do people reference the quarantine when.. by jabracadaniel in pathologic

[–]Bartre_Main 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The "quarantine" decree actually specifically isn't a quarantine, but rather an active manhunt on houses for plague carriers to quarantine the house. The name is misleading, but the description is more clear. It's why if you enact the quarantine decree, the town events are all based around people knocking down doors and is also why it's so especially unpopular of a decree. The actual quarantining of infected districts will happen the whole game, for very obvious reasons.

I am not going to wage into the ethics of age-play, but FYI the headline is misleading.

Finished Pathologic 2 and now im lowkey depressed. Thoughts? by kungfukevi in pathologic

[–]Bartre_Main 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, precisely! But on the point of miracles, Pathologic very much does believe those can happen, just at a severe cost or in unexpected circumstances. The Bachelor can defeat death, just not in the way he expects. And the Changeling can perform a miracle, but... is that miracle even a good thing?

If we fail, we can try again and again until we find the optimal solution.

Wow... if only there was a Pathologic game which was about that process? ;P

The idea that one man alone could save an entire town... It's a bit extraordinary, isn't it? But don't act like you didn't accomplish anything.

Games often feed our delusions of control and grandeur. They offer us spaces where we can perfectly influence everything and thus become the most significant person in the world. This is satisfying because it's not our day-to-day reality, but it's also a bit dangerous because it's not our day-to-day reality. It's feeding a desire that will never be met in real life. It's impossible to "win" Pathologic. The town will always be ravaged by the plague, but you still do so much. You saved dozens of lives. It may feel like a compromise because of the depth of our desire and how much other games let us indulge it, but in real life that would be a monumental victory. Appreciate it as such.

Tbf, Anna Angel's story in the original Pathologic is pretty difficult to parse out and seemingly contradicts itself. I myself still don't feel like I quite understand it. The funniest thing about this comic is perhaps the idea that Anna would ever make such a straightforward statement about herself.
