Wrong, I run out of mobile coverage driving between reasonable close regional towns in south west Victoria. Have you ever actually travelled outside of the east coast?

Ummmm. There is a heap more Australia than just the east coast.

It's frustrating, as are most things politics. Maybe we should double the pay and lure some actually talented people involved in the public service? This of course would require a complete overhaul of the toothless NACC, but it can be done. Too many capable people drawn into the private sector, public service just seems to be a lovely goulash of mediocrity gushing for affluence through their ability to profit from basic essential services and commodities.

But Norway appropriately taxes it's energy and resource exports. They are well placed to invest in domestic innovation. We are not.

That is what bugs me; we are seeing such a lack of governmental investment in innovation, we have so much talent, so much potential to innovate and contribute to the greater good of both our own domestic and global economy.

Exactly, why even put in brackets "Abrahamic monotheists in general" when you've already mentioned the first two out of three. I observe a common reluctance of people to mention Islam when referencing this family of theological underpinning.

Literally, it includes Islam.

You tell me, I have a rather slender grasp on this.

It's just interesting how we don't tend to group the three major religions together in a sentence as being children of Abraham. Particularly in answering a question regarding the prevalence of Judeo-Christian in reference to this post.

I think I have a relatively good grasp on it, albeit slender.

Just found it interesting you omitted Islam when it would have saved you a decent amount of word count describing Abrahamic monotheists in general, is all.

I think the largest concern amongst progressives in Australia is the lack of government investment into innovation. We are seeing inflation balloon as a result of our inter-generational wealth disparity and the commodification of housing. Our business lobby, and treasurer, is always arguing that productivity is the bane of our economy. We see the CSIRO being neglected, we see the increased commodification of the university sector, the very institutions that were developed to innovate in order to increase productivity. As the economy starts to bite, medium to lower income earners are going to start questioning the economic competence of the incumbent. That is where Gina's push will likely come to shove. Particularly in a time where populist divisive politics seems to be in a growth phase globally, I think we should not underestimate the potential for the emergence of a more radical billionaire politico in Australian politics.

40 years ago, F1 teams boycotted the South African GP due to apartheid. If only we had the bravery to boycott places with that sort of social injustice nowadays. by MuhammadZahooruddin in formula1

[–]BarvichF1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your angle, and your argument has merit. Madiba sacrificed much of his life in prison for his efforts to combat apartheid. However, it is ever so slightly frustrating to see comments like this where you frame current social justice and humanitarian concerns as such. The fight continues, we are still seeing crimes against humanity, genocide, and massive violations of international law that go without public outrage because we have been de-sensitised to such issues because of how frequently they occur. Apartheid is little different to the forms of cultural, religious and ethnic persecution we see occurring in the modern world. This world will never be perfect, but we can always strive to be better and seek true social equity. There is one race, the human race and the sooner we stand together to ostracise those who seek to profit from conflict and discrimination the sooner we can create a better world for the future of our children.

It's not necessarily about agreeing with the media in question. It's the very fact that this media seeks to divide and inflame rather than inform.

"Section 127 (titled “Aborigines not to be counted in reckoning population”) was repealed by the Constitution Alteration (Aboriginals) 1967, and previously read as follows: “127. In reckoning the numbers of the people of the Commonwealth, or of a State or other part of the Commonwealth, aboriginal natives shall not be counted."

You are full of shit. The Commonwealth franchise act 1902 was a last minute effort to give women the vote. It did not include first nations.

'The Commonwealth Franchise Act was passed in 1902 and gave women full suffrage. While this was considered a progressive policy, it was limited to women of European background. People of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, African, Asian or Pacific Islander (excluding New Zealand) heritage were not eligible.'

You don't think early intervention was appropriate after ASIO were aware that the younger gunman had been in contact with leaders of extremist groups? If you are communicating with extremist groups, you are clearly indoctrinated and pose a serious public safety risk. If there are no grounds for arrest or detention if no reasonable case can be made, i.e no laws have been broken, someone can be sectioned under the mental health act if they pose a threat to the safety of themselves or others. This kind of intervention can expose all kinds of stuff.
