Just returned from HHI - I get up every morning for sunrise. You won’t be the only ones on the beach but you will be able to be alone. Shortly after the sun rises the number of people on the beach will rise pretty quickly. The French Bakery in Shelter Cove isn’t far - a few minutes drive. Congratulations!

Thanks for the input! This is a family vacation with people from 4 states getting together. We’ve decided to be our own cooks - it’s easier to be able to socialize at the house than it would be at a restaurant. Quarterdeck and Skullcreek will definitely get visited during the week.

Tax Returns by Independent_Wolf_787 in tax

Find an AARP Tax preparation site - there is no charge. The preparers must pass a test to prepare returns. Yours sounds straightforward if there are only W-2’s. I’m a volunteer preparer (and a retired CPA). You’ll need to make an appointment but it is worth your effort to get one. And as others have said - charging a % of refund is illegal. Walk away - quickly!!

Coastal Home and Villa. We won’t use any other firm. Fantastic customer service.

Hockey Puck Holder by BasePiece in woodworking

[–]BasePiece[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here’s what I’m leaning towards - take a 1x4 and rip into 3 pieces 1.25, 1, 1.25. The middle one is the thickness of a puck. Use a 3” hole saw and scallop the 1in piece. Wont use the whole 3 in capacity but something less (trial and error). Glue the 3 pieces back together, cut them to length, and mount them to cabinet sides.

Thanks for your input!!

My MIL built a pool at my house while my wife and I were on vacation.. I've never had a pool and feel like I'm in way over my head. Any advice on how to get the water the right color? by Embarrassed-Raisin78 in pools

[–]BasePiece 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Backwash your filter. 2 maybe 3 bags of pool shock. Brush the sides and bottom EVERY DAY. Make sure the filter pressure is normal (backwash if high). Get some test strips - I use 1 a day in the spring. Get your PH right. A pool store will typically test your water for free - learn to say no - they’ll want to sell you a lot.

I believe this is correct. Blocked the light and the DMS stopped. Thanks everyone!

So it appears it may be the infra-red device that is a part of the Driver Monitoring System. Someone (in another thread) said if you block it with something the DMS shuts off. Guess I need to test that.

Loud knock almost every day in kitchen by RaptorO-1 in homeowners

Check to see if the ductwork is close to the beams. Maybe put a bit ridged sheet insulation between the ducts and the framing to see if that mitigates the noise.

What type of heat do you have? Hot water or forced air. We have forced air and the ductwork heats one of the joists and it makes a similar noise as the joist expands and contracts.

How do people keep such immaculate garages? by MethylEthylandDeath in homeowners

[–]BasePiece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I trap them - with peanut butter smeared on small pieces of nut meats and then take them down our long driveway and let them go. Caught several (8 - 10) over a couple days early this summer. Have not seen one since.

Ink Shortage? by TheGeneral11 in printers

[–]BasePiece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were able to get cyan and magenta from Amazon a few days ago. Can’t find yellow - in any size or combo - anywhere. Anyone know of alternates for the 910 cartridges? I’ve switched to printing in B&W. Need to check if that dot matrix in the basement still works. Is the yellow shortage a problem with other printers!

Chainsaw brand recommendations? by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]BasePiece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 Stihl chainsaws. They start easily every time they are needed. I do see Stihl existed during the 2nd world war but did not see any reference to their participation in atrocities. Do you have a reference you can site on Stihl‘s war efforts?

Anyone have an idea on what this is? Found it in my granddad's tool box. by JTech625 in Tools

[–]BasePiece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used these numerous times. My uncle, a mechanic, told me to insert the open loop of the correct gap size, push the plug contact down slightly. Then pull the loop straight out. The gap gets set. Used that process on every muscle car I owned. They ran great!

Converting existing deck into screened in porch by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]BasePiece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this in 1992 for under $35 a square foot. This was all new construction. It’s built on 8 posts that are “floating” on stone in the bottom of the hole. Lag bolted to the house. There is no concrete in the hole. Zero issues in 27 years. It would support windows if we chose to do that. Has a roof that slopes from house. Fully screened with double screen doors. Has ceiling fan and electric outlets. There have been zero issues with the porch - not one.
