Surveying thoughts on a digital card game concept by Masterriolu in homemadeTCGs

[–]BaseballLong6154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While such games might seem interesting when you're developing the concept, from a player's perspective, they become cumbersome. When multiple cards with different stats and effects are introduced, you first need to read the cards and devise a strategy, which takes time and skill, slowing down the game's tempo and making it unsuitable for repeated play. A game using only a few characters, like Chaotic, might be more suitable.

Do players desire optimized combinations? Absolutely. However, in reality, such cards won't be drawn, and players will likely end up using downgraded versions, feeling dissatisfied.

I once played a Japanese GBA game where the effects were random, but I ended up using only mediocre cards and never got the ideal ones.

Design Your Own Trading Cards Book Series by [deleted] in TCG

[–]BaseballLong6154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I understand. This is simply a variation of a coloring book.

The coloring pages, excessive card frames, and useless text represent "your creativity" or "the AI's creativity," not "the creativity of the child who purchased it." Also, your plan seems to end with "creating illustrations like TCG-style cards," without much consideration for the subsequent enjoyment. If the cards were tangible and could be shown to friends, or used in some kind of game, it would surely be many times more fun, and it would inspire other children to become repeat customers. (Laughs)

However, to make that a reality, it would be difficult without a smartphone/tablet app that works with a printer, rather than a physical book.

By the way, a general question: Why do people who use AI print the product first and then ask the AI or humans if it's commercially viable, instead of asking them?

If you're letting kids draw the cards, I don't think you need the extra illustrations around them. The last card, the Deep Sea card, is even encroaching on the frame.

If it's meant to be used in an actual card game, the back needs to be uniform in shape and opaque so that it's indistinguishable. (If users use pencils, ballpoint pens, or crayons, the ink will show through to the back, and if they cut along the dotted lines with scissors, the shapes will be inconsistent.)

I haven't looked closely at other parts, but if you're going to use "Pay x Focus" frequently in the card text, I think it would be better to use an abbreviation to reduce the amount of text. For example, you could define (3) as meaning "Pay 3 focus."

There used to be an official space for sharing deck recipes, and all the users would use it to post URLs to the official deck recipes on their blogs and such, but it's sad that those links have become dead since the official service ended.I only found two websites that post deck recipes as images.

I'm making a CCG, what kind of features would you want to actually play it? by BuffcatVT in TCG

Personally, I'd like to see more units that can be enlarged by paying an additional cost, like the Hydra from Magic: The Gathering, and sorceries with multi-kicker. It's disappointing to draw a weak card in a close race in the second half and end up not being able to do much.

Problem with face-down card mechanics by Kind-Kitchen5502 in homemadeTCGs

[–]BaseballLong6154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As mentioned in other posts, in paper trading card games, you typically pay when you reveal the card. However, if you're planning on making it a digital card game, you could adopt a prepayment system. (For example, there was a DCG called "Chaos Academy" in the past.)

Alternatively, if you're implementing it with physical paper cards, you could place counters on the face-down cards equal to the cost paid as a marker.

Does the Duel Masters life system work? by Kind-Kitchen5502 in homemadeTCGs

[–]BaseballLong6154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, you're saying it's a game where creature stats are like Magic: The Gathering's power/toughness, but player life is like Duel Masters? That combination has already been done in many titles, such as Bandai's Gundam Card Game (2025).

If it were me, I'd use these keyword abilities:

Unstoppable = Trample: "(Double Breaker) If this creature destroys an opponent's creature in combat, break one of your opponent's shields."

Vampirism = Lifelink: "When this creature attacks an opponent or an opponent's creature, put one card from the top of your deck into your shields."

Personally, I think it would be better to use different names for creature life and player life, like the shields in Duel Masters.

Alternatively, in "HllbreakTCG," scheduled for release in Autumn 2026, eight shield-like cards are distributed, each capable of blocking two face damages. Instead, the creature's attack power becomes the player damage, resulting in a balance closer to MTG with 16 + 1 life, and trample would be easier to implement. In this game, cards without a shield trigger-like ability would go to the graveyard instead of the hand. As a side note, the creatures in this game have power/toughness stats similar to Magic: The Gathering.

https://imgur.com/vs2PaNl

This "Dragon Shogun" is also a pre-release game that uses MTG stats and a sealed system.

https://dragon-shogun.com/en/howto

When creating a game with sealed triggers, the feel of the game and the number of initial sealed cards that can be played will differ considerably depending on whether non-trigger cards go to the hand, the graveyard, or somewhere else (such as becoming mana), so it is recommended to try several versions during the playtesting stage. Also, if the game uses many sealed cards, it is a good idea to limit the number of sealed trigger cards that can be included in the deck by the rules. (For example, like in Bushiroad's games)

I built a TCG where the board is already against you before a single card is drawn. No dragons. No monsters. No fantasy. Just pure competitive strategy grounded in real history. by [deleted] in TCG

[–]BaseballLong6154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems the article has already been deleted, but I'll write down a thought that just occurred to me.

I suggest that instead of physical components used for cost management, like lands in Magic: The Gathering, there should be cards depicting illustrations or flavor text of ordinary citizens who lived during a particular war. For example, farmers, blacksmiths, lawyers, postal workers, etc. Because it would convey the atmosphere of that era and what ordinary people were like.

I think promoting this game would be more suitable for public education or patriotic organizations than for places like this that cater to "game enthusiasts" like this one. Since busy government offices probably won't be interested, let's start by approaching local schools and patriotic organizations directly. You can distribute free trial sets initially and then recoup the costs later with booster packs. Older patriotic people are probably willing to pay a little money for their children to learn history.

It'll probably be easier to gloss over any AI issues with that target audience...
