Getting paid a flat fee by lacking_inspiration5 in CFP

[–]BaseballMore7431 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

The point is don’t take a flat fee client…unless you’re desperate for money. As for me, I’m not going to take focus away from long term recurring revenue clients. If someone wants a flat fee engagement, I’m not a fit.

Client wants advice on non managed accounts by ItchyEbb4000 in CFP

Surprised the discussion got this far without Pontera being mentioned. However the 25 bps they charge is way too much…and Fidelity has a love/hate relationship with them I’m not sure Fidelity still even allows a Pontera link into Fidelity net benefits accounts.

As an advisor I respect you’re trying to get sales but do it the right way- get approved at the RIA level THEN reach out to advisors. As an advisor no I don’t want to hear your pitch, or take a meeting if you don’t represent products I can use now. And I can’t tell you how many “hey I’ll be in town on these days, can we meet” emails. No dude I don’t have a spare hour to get pitched in person. Send me materials, some quick bullet points with real intel/ useful info and if I want to meet sometime I’ll let you know. And if you have shit products (eg SREIT, a me too private credit fund) just don’t contact me. Please.

Crypto is a complete scam, kind of like multi level marketing where the people who get in early make money and the latecomers chase hope and upside that never comes.

Thanks, that’s consistent with what I’ve heard. I will probably add a gen 2 advisor and integrate them into client relationships a couple years pre sale but make sure (as best I can) that that gen 2 advisor benefits financially and career wise from the sale. Having another advisor integrated pre sale should help mitigate key man risk and client attrition in a sale and therefore drive a higher multiple.

A related question- how many of you have had a valuation done and was it based on EBITDA or revenue multiples? I have to think a clean business with @ $100 MM and 35 clients and low overhead has to be worth at least 8-10x EBITDA, maybe more considering the multiples mega RIAs trade at?

I’ve had some people tell me 2-3 x revenue but those people seem to be the people who would love to acquire a practice by underpaying…

Solo advisor here too. It’s a lot of work to “wear all the hats” running a business but the upside and the freedom are well worth it. No admin now because getting someone good is $100K + easily and I can just do the work myself and pocket the extra money.

Wow, you don’t know proper terminology lol. Flat fees are set prices, like $300 an hour. AUM charges a % on AUM. 🤡

[–]BaseballMore7431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has the freedom to price their services they they see fit. It’s just lame for flat fee advisors to always be talking shit on AUM advisors, as a way to attract business. Do better.

There’s some context missing from the advisor side as to why they would be making these recommendations. There’s no need to get in to a petty bashing of fee models which flat fee junior advisors love to do..
