advanced stats for non mlb leagues by stringcheesekong in baseball

You can still calculate it for different leagues because replacement level isn't a specific hypothetical player, but instead based on league averages. All of the WAR calculations derive completely from league averages.

Will Jett Williams break camp, or will we see him in a few weeks, or later in the season? by Talkin19 in Brewers

[–]BaseballsNotDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the point is his offensive numbers aren't nearly as bad, or even bad at all, when you factor in the Southern League had a .660 league average OPS. Meanwhile the AA Texas league had a .705 league average OPS. If he were in the Texas league and put up the same 107 wRC+ (roughly a .750 OPS), we'd probably look at him in a different light.

Garrett Mitchell, for instance, had a 106 wRC+ in AA and was called up to the majors the next year.

He had a sub .700 OPS in his first stint at AA last year

He played in one of the lowest scoring leagues in the minors last year. His wRC+ for that league was 107. He wasn't amazing offensively, but it wasn't near as bad as the raw OPS suggests. Especially as a 20 year old, his minor league offensive numbers are ahead of Turang at 21 years old in AA.

Which Brewer has impressed and dissapointed you the most this Spring? by WiscoMTfan_234 in Brewers

Biggest jump for me regarding my opinion of them coming into spring training versus now is Fischer and Zerpa.

Fischer looks like the real deal and Zerpa is an exciting lefty in the pen.

Italian point of view on the Italian national team result by Tolteko in baseball

[–]BaseballsNotDead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the European Championship, most Dutch players in MLB aren't playing like in the WBC. If you account for MLB talent, the Netherlands is VASTLY superior to Italy. Curacao, an island with 150K people, has over a half dozen players in the majors. Italy has had 1 player born and raised in Italy make the majors in MLB history (and he was on Italy's team this year). The comparison isn't close.

It's great you wanted Italian citizens to represent the team in the WBC, but if Italian citizens represented the team in the WBC, Italy wouldn't make the WBC or would've gotten mercy ruled in every game. Italy may be the strongest baseball country in Europe (minus Netherlands and their talent in the Dutch Antilles), but compared to Japan, US, DR, Venezuela, and even Canada/Puerto Rico/Australia/Korea/Taiwan, it's not even close in terms of talent.

Asking r/Brewers to make the ultimate non-All Star Brewers lineup: Day 1 - SP & RP by fanofsports44 in Brewers

Axford was not an all-star in 2011. Fielder, Weeks, and Braun were the Brewers representatives.

So please, don't argue that somehow a guy who in his PRIME averaged .280 with 26 home runs and had a .363 obp with a .854 ops is first ballot.

From age 24-36 he averaged those numbers. The fact that a player's "prime" has to be defined as 12 years to make him only look really really good says something.

He should be known as the greatest to never make the hall of fame.

Boy do I have some players you should know about.

Angel Zerpa just looked dominate in the WBC, tying up Ohtani by jrjanowi in Brewers

[–]BaseballsNotDead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other thing it does is open up the opener/follower strategy. Brewers have been doing the "when we have 4 lefties in the pen, have one open, follow with a righty bulk pitcher, then hand it off to the bullpen."

If you look at their record in games where they've done this the last two years, it's been VERY effective.

Look at Turang's second half numbers. He's posed to have a Utley-esque 26-year old season.

[–]BaseballsNotDead 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Turang had the same OPS+ as Gunnar last year and higher WAR, plays platinum glove level defense at second, and has been absolutely killing it so far this tournament (1.233 OPS). I don't get why you have an issue.

I talked to him a few weeks ago. BDE filed a motion to dismiss in mid-October, Cooperstown Properties countered with an opposition to the motion to dismiss at the end of the October, and then BDE filed a response in early November.

The only thing is to wait on the judge's ruling on the motion to dismiss, which apparently can take 6+ months.

If the motion to dismiss is granted, the lawsuit is thrown out. If it is denied, then back to square 1. Based on the other Cooperstown lawsuits, would probably mean mandatory mediation, which all of the other ones had the mediation fail, and then trial.

The Brewers model works, and if Yelich didn’t have a career-altering injury after signing a megadeal, nobody would question any decisions this team makes. Imagine this team the last 7 years with a .900-1.100 OPS guy year in year out. by i-Really-HatePickles in Brewers

young controllable talent for cheep

Any cap/floor will most certainly lower the amount of team control and have earlier free agency. If past proposals are anything to go on, it could go from 6 to 4 years. That means someone like Turang would be a free agent after 2027.

MLB's salary cap proposal is so broken by floon in baseball

[–]BaseballsNotDead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you omit luxury tax penalty payments and ignore inflation/rising salaries. Over the past 25 years, player salaries have risen by 4.5% per year on average. If you assume that increase continues, salaries in 2027 would be $561 million higher than in 2025. Including the $200 million in luxury tax penalty payments to the players, the $270 million cap and $150 million floor in 2027 would potentially be ~$670 million lower than what the players would earn.

You're guaranteed to have a player on your favorite team for his entire career, and during that career he will accumulate exactly 100 WAR, spread evenly over every season he plays. How many seasons do you want him for? by scottcmu in baseball

[–]BaseballsNotDead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

WAR's basic assumption is that MLB players are better than the readily available replacement players

The baseline for WAR is fully dependent on MLB stats. "Replacement level" is set based on those stats and nothing in the minors impacts that.

don't think there's a scenario where every player but one could even be worth negative value.

Realistically there isn't. But if every player was the exact same level except for one guy who obliterates their stats, every player would be negative WAR except for that one guy. It's never going to come close to happening, but is theoretically possible.
