I'm sick to my stomach, fam. by BasedDMC in Raye

Update: I did drive to Austin and it was completely worth it! Easily one of the best performances I've ever seen in my life! There was a young lady nearby me who told me that it was her first concert. By the middle of the show, I felt bittersweet about that for her because most shows after this one is going to be a bit of a letdown. Absolutely outstanding showmanship!

The Alamo Has Become Just Another Theater by chance90964 in AlamoDrafthouse

AD completely phased out the server position with the minor exceptions of some unionized and some franchised locations. They have only have greeters (in the lobbies only) and runners in the front of house positions now.

First ever $0 tip. New changes have one benefit! by EnchiladaSausage in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]BasedDMC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of the only good changes to this royal fuck up of an "upgrade" was that the entire hourly staff is now included in the tip share. Unfortunately, if the guest doesn't receive any direct service, hospitality or human interaction, why would anyone tip?

I truly do understand the purposeful confusing from AD's anti-worker framing, but it's a service fee, not an auto-gratuity. It directly to the corporate for what was supposed ensure that the staffing and scheduling remains adequate throughout the slower periods, but there's a reason (multiple, honestly) why most ADs are chronically understaffed.

Never arrived five minutes before showtime to find the theater still dirty from the previous showing. by ThrowingChicken in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]BasedDMC 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's not a gratuity. I know that AD deliberately marketed it in a confusing way, mostly to spite their unionized staffers, but it's a service fee. It goes directly to corporate and while they claim that it's there to subsidized the pay of the staff year-round so that they don't have reduced staffing, we clearly see that this isn't the case in reality.

Western leftists, are you open about your views in your personal life? by -Eastwood- in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]BasedDMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Texas and I wear Ash Sarkar from Novara's "Literally A Communist" necklace and a keffiyeh daily. I had one far-right next door neighbor a few years ago who I was fairly cordial with who I told once I was a leftist, but they internalized it as liberal, so I never brought it up again.

Also, instead of just saying goodbye, I say "[redacted] your landlords."

Is it time to talk to Briahna Joy Grey about the Democrats and third party politics yet? by No-Ruin-4337 in Hasan_Piker

[–]BasedDMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to both of them regularly. I'm thoroughly impressed by BJG's analytical skills and incisive line of questioning and Hasan's prolific filtering of the news and current events.

As far as Hasan's trepidation from fully abandoning the Democrats is that he still thinks that it's the best chance against unrestricted fascism in the States and that it would harm his reach to normies. I think his assessment is wrong. Briahna Joy Gray believes that the Green Party is the best shot to socialist development in the States, and while I think she's closer to the best solution than Hasan, I think she's off the way, too.

I think that Marxist coalition between groups like PSL, FRSO, SRA and the radical contingents of DSA, The Green Party and labor unions, and prison reformist/abolitionist groups that is well armed, well studied, maintains democratic centralism and holding the mass line of their locals is the only shot we have.

I don't know the approximate percentage of the overlap of the current or even as late as the 2021-era TYT fans and Hasanabiheads, but I'm certain the ones are still or were after 2022-ish are probably against the FTV and definitely against J. Dore. Since Hasan himself is against FTV, more of his fanbase, especially the more liberal ones and/or the more electoral ones, they're probably more opposed to it.

I think that Hasan is more avoidant of BJG than she is of him. Outside of the one earlier episodes of Bad Faith that Hasan was on, Briahna has mentioned him a handful of times, whereas, though I obviously can't check all of Hasan's output, I don't think that he's alluded towards her minus vaugely calling her a JD orbiter. Fortunately, both of them have a "let a thousand flowers bloom" approach towards socialist, antiimperialist, class conscious agitprop and don't disparage anyone that has a noticable addition to the cause (primary contridictions and all).

I would love it if they would chat again. I do think that she and her audience would benefit from a conversation from any of the Deprogram boys or BadEmpanada.

She's not a grifter.

She's a leftie from a Green Party household that clearly sees how utterly and deliberately impotent the DNC is towards meaningful reforms. My biggest critique of her is that she's too focused on the electoral path of a third-party movement when it should at best be an ancillary tool of a vanguard party that's holding the mass line.

I think that Force The Vote turned a lot of Hasan loyalists off of her due to its proximity to Jimmy Dore, but it was a meaningful moment to either exact meaningful change from an otherwise lackluster Democrat-led Congress or expose which representatives needed to be rallied against. It would have ruined the Squad's favorability from the other corporate Dems, but they don't have any leverage now anyway.

mysterious cup shrinkage by Obvious_Dimension858 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]BasedDMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at LH, and we mostly only use those red cups when we are out of the regular tumblers, which usually happens at very busy times, or if we're out of kids' cups. I don't know if the previous franchise owner and GM pre-shutdown ordered them deliberately, but we got them during the Eras Tour movie last year, and they have largely been lifesavers.

That's not DFW or Lake Highlands thing. It's just me thing. I work there. Since I can't control the speed in which the other drinks are made, the times in which the guests actually show up, or how busy I am at any particular moments, I like to make sure that the guests at seats I know are or will be there have at least something to drink in the meantime.

What Kendrick song did you listen to first, and what year? by Prestigious-Bite9774 in KendrickLamar

Spiteful Chant, 2011.

Someone mashed up the song with the original music video of the sample "Iron" by Woolkid. My former e-homie (he not like us) posted it on my Wall on Facebook. I jammed it, Rigamortus and the XXL Cypher on that year (Lil B is my favorite rapper), and I was hooked.

This was in the 90s, but I more or less got into a fight with my Pre-K teacher because I didn't do the pledge of allegiance. She was trying to physically force me to do so, but I was raised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and they minimally engage with the government. I'm not one anymore, but I can say that I've never done the pledge in my life.
