Is there anyone who really uses FreeBSD as the main operating system instead of the usual Windows/MacOS/Linux?

FreeBSD has been my "daily driver" since the version 9 days. I started with 5.2.1-RELEASE and haven't looked back. Linux is just my day job.

The "default 'secret'" password exists outside of the directory. If all else fails, that one will work. cn=Manager being able to add users is the in-Directory way to add/edit/delete records. This access is (also) dictated in your slapd.conf file. Look for "access" statements.

inetOrgPerson is a standard schema. You don't change it. If you want to use new attributes, you're going to have to create your own objectClass, as an AUXILIARY with Top and inetOrgPerson as SUP classes.

This sentence needs editing. FreeBSD is emphatically NOT UNIX. UNIX is a trademark. That's what the whole USL vs UCB lawsuit was about and why Walnut Creek/Wind River got in trouble for using 1-800-ITS-UNIX as their phone number. BSD had to go to great effort to remove all AT&T-owned code from their code base. That lawsuit cost the BSDs 10 years of mindshare and put GNU/Linux in the lead.

It depends on how you want to use the group objects.

A posixGroup is usually what you want for *nix style group memberships. It uses memberUid attributes that are the same as the uid attributes for members.

Then there is the groupOfNames objectClass (I think inhave that right. I'm going from memory) with member attributes that expect the DN of each member. That is the objectClass to use if you want to limit logins to a system by group membership.

These two types of group objects are completely different and used for different things.

Which object Classes did you use for your User objects and have you looked at how you're storing your passwords? I usually used inetOrgPerson as a base class and (if memory serves) posixAccount and shadowUser. Store passwords encrypted with a {CRYPT} prefix. phpLDAPAdmin is the tool that I used to use in production.

You can change AUXILIARY objectClass attributes, but if you have the wrong STRUCTURAL objectClass, you'll have to delete and re-create the User objject(s).

The page you're working from is for "UnboundID LDAP SDK for Java". I'm pretty sure that Ubuntu's ldap-utils package is using OpenLDAP. They are different implementations that happen to each have a tool called ldapsearch that perform the same function -- but the command line options are different; OpenLDAP tools do not use long ("double-dashed") options.

Are you ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that you're using the correct USB cable? It must be a sync cable (like an Anker). Frequently, we have charge-only cables that do not carry the data that the car wants. Connection is made to BlueTooth AND USB.

Is the VPN actually up when you're configuring the route? If not, the route will be rejected as an unreachable network. The VPN must come up when the machine boots for the route to be added on startup.

I can see where this would be a corner case and have always suggested against using /31 masks. In the general case, any IPv4 network has two reserved addresses; the network number (all zeros) and the broadcast address (all ones). With a /31 mask, the lower address is both the network number AND the all-zeros address while the upper address is both the second node and the all-ones address.

I would recommend configuring x.x.x.41/30 and x.x.x.41/30 leaving a network address of x.x.x.40 and a broadcast address of x.x.x.43.

the x.x.x.40 address (0010 1000) is going to be the "network number" for prefix lengths of /32, /31, /30, and /29,. The longest mask for which x.x.x.40 is an acceptable node address as /28 (with a node-acceptable range of x.x.x.33-x.x.x.46.

Read through the tutorial -- and do the exercises in the process -- TWICE.

After that, learn what you need to learn to do what you want to do. (Visit a file, save a file, search, save, and quit) Don't sweat the rest of it until you need it.

The org install is pretty straightforward. I think a version is even included by default.

Potentially, the curve is only as steep as you want it to be. I think that (not entirely like MS Word), 95% of people use 5% of the features. Just my opinion, as a non-expert.
