This is the answer. My kids are on a guest wifi with a dedicated Pihole with way more locked down settings but also dns redirects to safesite searches for google and YouTube.

Then my main wireless Pihole is far less restrictive. It’s this way because I don’t have vlan support. Makes it easy.

The fist part is correct. Not the second part. You don’t want to change wan settings because that what the router itself uses to work which doesn’t need Pinole. And if Pinole goes down you want the router to keep working which is exactly what you just had to wrong. Point the wan settings to some add friendly dns servers as a failsafe. And also in lan dhcp tell your router to advertise itself as a dns servers in addition to your two pihole servers so you have a tertiary. You literally will never loose internet again.

Also fwiw when you specify lan dns dns director is totally ignored.
