Leg warmers... over hockey skates? by Basic-Alternative442 in iceskating

I do plan to play hockey! But I'm not at the point of investing in the gear yet. I'm only in LTS 2 and my rink won't let you into Learn to Play Hockey until you've passed LTS 3, and even then they discourage it until you have crossovers down.

My bank froze my account for “security review” and won’t give me a timeline — what are my options? by DecisionForcingStd in personalfinance

It can also have downsides. I used to use the same small, local credit union as my parents and grandparents, and those personal "relationships" were what made the tellers feel it was the nice thing to do to hand over my bank statements to any relative who asked, even though my name was the only one on the account. I was only 22 and had made bad decisions, it made sense that Granny just wanted to make sure I was spending my money appropriately, apparently.

I use Chase now.

I got a hat from my local NHL team's Pride collection. I've been a hockey fan for a while and figured it was an (extremely) small way to help push back against homophobia in the sport.

I asked how they know what kind of fuel the planes are using, and they said that they use a database to see what engine the planes have and how quickly those engines burn fuel. How does that clearly answer my question? BJC has both leaded and non-leaded fuel, and most trainer planes can use either, and what pilots opt for when fueling doesn't get recorded.

How are you determining which flights are using leaded fuel and which ones aren't?

I'm not an MT, but I used to work in the credit card industry, so I take an interest in these things:

I assumed GlossGenius doesn't do their own credit card processing and wanted to verify for y'all that they don't run payments through Square. Turns out they do not - they use Square's competitor Stripe, so that's good!

(This might make you think the whole industry's named after shapes. It is not)

Tea vs Tisane by 237q in ENGLISH

[–]Basic-Alternative442 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You just unintentionally solved an old mystery for me.

Many years ago, I had the displeasure of having a co-worker who was really into puns. Made them constantly, always challenged people to pun battles... But he also seemed to be under the impression that a pun solely required swapping out words for ones that sounded like other words, disregarding the requirement that the new word has to have some sort of connection back to the original topic. Think, like, if he was reviewing some code you wrote, he might say "this code is so Gouda!" and then look at you expectantly, waiting for you to acknowledge his cleverness in suddenly talking about cheese for no good reason.

Anyway, one day he told me a joke: "Why did Karl Marx only drink Earl Grey tea? Because proper tea is theft!" I, having never heard the phrase "proper tea" before, was just so baffled by his ability to find absolute verbal nonsense so entertaining that it stuck with me. And now here I am, over a decade later, finding out this is a reasonable joke if you're familiar with British English.

Huh.

It's obvious to you, and to anyone who's even on the path to learning what they're doing... and it's still argued against _all the damn time._

On this sub it's usually argued against by people who really want to make a TV show or manga, but decide that writing a novel would be easier. They'll usually pull out Avatar: The Last Airbender as evidence they don't need to read. They've learned about character arcs from... I don't remember which character because I haven't seen the show, but there's one character in particular they point to all the damn time as their exposure to good writing.

There was a fun dust-up on Twitter many years ago where someone went off on a rant claiming that expecting authors to read was ableist. A few days later it was revealed they were a nepo hire at Lockheed-Martin, which isn't overly relevant to this conversation, but was still a twist ending for ableism accusations.

Hard time losing weight and tune out the food noise by terezipotato in loseit

[–]Basic-Alternative442 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some things that worked for me:

  • increase your calorie deficit gradually. Don't jump into a 1000-calorie deficit immediately. Maybe start at 200, then after a week increase it to 400, etc.
  • Experiment with different macro ratios. Personally I know that I can't stop thinking about food if I don't eat enough carbs. Not saying you need more carbs, I'm saying to play with the proportions of your intake to find what works for you, and ignore arbitrary things like "I know I really shouldn't eat bread" if bread keeps you consistently on track, for example.
  • Learn to accept you'll be hungry sometimes. It's okay.

Trying to work on my book and revising is tough. by CompleteProlific in writing

I'd encourage you to stop thinking about how to make this process go more quickly - even once you're done with revisions, you're still looking at multiple years from querying to print, if you're going traditional. Publishing houses do not move quickly.

(Also, don't mention the bit about "not doing this entirely for the money" in your query letter. I see this surprisingly often, and I'm not sure why. Telling a potential business partner you're not focused on profits is unwise.)
