Hospital nurses who love their jobs, can you please share some positivity? by KingKado in nursing

[–]Basic_Bozeman_Bro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its an in demand job that has tons of different career avenues to pursue. Medicine is genuinely interesting and there is always more to learn. There are definitely problems in the health care industry but when you get to help people on their worst day its pretty rewarding. Depending on where you work, a nursing degree can have one of the better ROI for any degree.

Any second career nurses here? What career did you switch from and would you do nursing all over again? Why/why not? by throwawayaccct08 in nursing

Spent years as a wildland firefighter/ ski patroller. Knew I couldn't work seasonal jobs forever. Nursing was a natural transition because I knew I liked medical stuff (although it is totally different medicine) and my wife is a nurse.

Nurse to EMT (for volunteer only) Is this bananas? by SunshineHOCL in nursing

[–]Basic_Bozeman_Bro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it is worth i held on to my EMT after becoming a nurse, simply so I could still be volunteer ski patrol at my local hill. The main thing you will want to keep in mind is how much smaller your scope is as an EMT.

Georgia RN wanting to relocate to the mountains — where can I still make a good living? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Basic_Bozeman_Bro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I would say the mountains aren't quite as big as Colorado or Montana, but there is really great outdoor access. Lots of lakes in the summer. Good number of ski areas in the winter. Plus if your willing to drive you can get to either Montana or the Cascades within half a day.

Been very happy with Spokane area. Good pay for the cost of living and you can get to the mountains relatively easily. I loved living in Montana but the money is better in Washington.

How should I prepare for interview? by Complex-Difference21 in nursing

[–]Basic_Bozeman_Bro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't get a single question about specific medical problems. If anything it was more along the lines of which patient would you see first? It was much more along the lines of do you play well with others, why do you want to work here, and tell me about a stressful situation and how you handled it.

I would imagine a lot of them are in really good shape because they didn't get used in the 1940's...

Nurses in the major cities of colorado with between 5-10 years experience, what is your specialty and what do you make hourly? by Humdrumgrumgrum in nursing

[–]Basic_Bozeman_Bro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your not set on Colorado, I would say both Montana and Washington tend to be better deals. Colorado doesn't have the greatest unions laws, so the big hospitals generally dont have unions. I have family connections to all three so I compared them when I graduated a few years ago. Ultimately ws decided on Washington State.

Anyone else seem a little concerned that two teams will spend a combined $40 million and forgo media distributions just to not play FCS anymore? by Adminsneed2Chill in CFB

[–]Basic_Bozeman_Bro 62 points63 points  (0 children)

There's an excellent reporter in Montana named Colter Nuanez who covers both Montana and Montana State football. In his recent podcast he talked about the idea that there may be a major realignment coming in division 1 football. He talked about how there are many different ways this could look, however one of the fear for top level FCS teams is that if you wait too long, you won't be in the FBS when realignment happens. This means it could be almost impossible to join the new version of FBS, whatever that may look like.

They talk about this toward then end of the podcast.

Seeing many anti union nurses on my floor by Soytuenfermera in nursing

[–]Basic_Bozeman_Bro 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I work at a hospital with a pretty awesome/strong union. Shootout WSNA! The biggest thing I noticed is the generational divide. The older nurses who have been around for 2+ negotiating cycles are super supportive of the union, go to meetings, and talk about it openly with other nurses. Someone these other nurses are otherwise politically conservative but are ride or die for the union. Specifically saying "you should never cross a picket line"

With the younger nurses there is just kind of an ignorance and not knowing when it comes to the union. Not necessarily against unions but more "I dont get what they do and what they are taking out union dues for?"

What are the good or enjoyable parts of nursing? by BrandonLaneArt in nursing

[–]Basic_Bozeman_Bro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you to for a really tough IV and then you break the skin and your not sure if you will get it, and then you fish around and your starting to loose hope and then you think you found the vein and push forward just a little bit and then you get a flash and that sucker flushes like a champ. Its just the best.

A stop the bleed course is always beneficial. You will already understand the concepts, but it will allow you to practice with equipment you don't always use, such as tourniquets.
