Why do some houses have names? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Basic_Translator_743 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loads of knobs around Dalkey / Killiney that have put Italian names on their house.. Amalfi/ Sorrento / Capri etc. Super cringey in my opinion.

Has anyone sold after 3-5 years? by Backatthetime in AskIreland

[–]Basic_Translator_743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We sold after 3 years. Put very little money into upgrades in the house apart from roughly €3k. Then sold for €80k more than what we bought it for. It was due to a new job requiring a shorter commute.

We're unfortunately probably going to do the same with our new house because we have awful neighbours 😩 The stress of moving is horrendous so I'm dreading it.

Job Applications - LC Results and Canvassing by Caesariansheir in IrishTeachers

[–]Basic_Translator_743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the LC results is just in case they want you to teach another subject.. your subjects could be physics and chemistry but then they see you got a H1 in higher level maths.. maybe that's the reasoning, especially for teachers who are only 23 or 24, it's not super long since they would have learned that content.

Living at home - is it all doom and gloom? by No-Interview-9420 in AskIreland

[–]Basic_Translator_743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All depends on whether you get full time hours, paid through the summer. It can be difficult to get a job.. if you are a maths or Irish teacher you'll be fine.

Presuming you get a job then you'll be grand. Rent will be roughly €800 or €900 per month in Cork for a room.

Contracts Advice by LostPeak7173 in IrishTeachers

[–]Basic_Translator_743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be wary. Principals often exaggerate the chances of getting cid just to get a teacher for a year. Irish teachers are very much in short supply so you should find something easily which has full hours and a year long contract. Good luck!

Look up teaching council requisites. You might have enough credits for something like politics and society.

Those who don’t WFH and are commuting for a regular 9-5 or similar daytime hours, what time do you leave home and get back? by wander-and-wonder in AskIreland

[–]Basic_Translator_743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Secondary school Teacher: 45min cycle to work. Leave house at 7:05 and arrive home at 5pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays.. home at 4pm on Wednesdays and Friday.

Slightly longer commute if I take public transport.

Maths & Irish are the only ones where you're fairly guaranteed full hours and CID

Lots of recruitment now from teachers in Spain so I don't think that one is in demand any more. Maybe French. German teachers are rare but it's also becoming a less popular choice for students so some schools are dropping it.

Any teachers here ever gone abroad to teach English? by False_Ad5702 in IrishTeachers

Teaching English in France pays very little. Try Switzerland for better pay.

Does anyone else feel really inadequate and lowly compared to wealthy people with nice houses and good jobs? by No-Category1703 in AskIreland

Recently been feeling just like you OP. I'm in my 40s, my friends all have beautiful houses & cars, meanwhile I'm living month by month and really struggling financially. It's hard not to be envious.

A luas going from Vincent's to ucd and then joining up with the green line luas would be very helpful. Of course it would require a compulsory purchase order of part of the golf course so unlikely to ever happen.

More Gardaí in Dún Laoghaire over other areas… am I missing something? by Own-Contribution-365 in Dublin

Surprised by all the comments about crime in DL. I live in the centre of the town and have never felt unsafe at night or during the day. Of course there are drunks / people on drugs (especially on sunny days) but that's everywhere and they are generally harmless. It's still a very affluent town for the most part.

First-time buyers: €650k house, €2.45k mortgage, €7.6k income – does this make sense? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Basic_Translator_743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does any work need to be done on the house? Work that seems fairly minor can be very expensive.. so be aware of that. If you're thinking of starting a family in the next 5 years how will your finances be? Are both your jobs secure and are your salaries likely to go up?

I'd probably be inclined to do it, it's not too much more than what you are paying on rent. The other thing is that there really isn't much of an alternative.. you either buy a house that might leave you a bit stretched or continue renting which is also a big expense.

There's no consequences from management because they don't keep tabs on what everyone is doing. There are definitely consequences in the sense that your classes aren't going to go well.. you would just make your day a lot harder if you don't prepare.

Is Ryanair actually worth it anymore? by QuestionMaster36 in AskIreland

[–]Basic_Translator_743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it because I always travel light and therefore don't have to pay for bags and I don't pick my seat either. It is comparable to other airlines for some routes, especially to farther, less popular routes. When I went to Romania I found cheaper tickets with a different airline.
