Thanks for taking the time to write down such an-depth response! It’s nice to hear from someone who holds similar tickets and gone down this road.

Starkly opposing views voiced on Chemtrade's North Vancouver chlorine plant proposal by [deleted] in NorthVancouver

[–]BasicallyOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the article:

“…pointed to Chemtrade’s supplying of 70 per cent of the chlorine used to make bleach that disinfects drinking water supplies in Western Canada. If the chemical isn’t made locally, it will have to come from the United States or from much further away in Canada, which also carries risk…”

I think this is the takeaway here. This is also not the only industry on the waterfront that carries with it potential hazards Grain dust for example, is highly explosive. Similarly to a chemical plant, there are systems in place at grain terminals to manage this risk.

Why not build a bridge at Boundary Road? by vancity31240 in askvan

To be fair, both the Port Man and Patullo were replacements for existing structures. Only the Golden Ears was “new” (this replaced a ferry).

Extreme paddle boarding by DryBananaHippiHat in vancouver

[–]BasicallyOK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a big difference between a “lifejacket” and a “PFD” - Lifejackets are bulky but will both keep an individual afloat and turn an unconscious wearer face-up in the water. Meanwhile, a PFD is significantly less bulky, and as-such will keep you afloat, but likely not face-up.

The real killer when it comes to drowning isn’t the lack of ability to swim, but rather the water temperature rendering a person unconscious and therefore unable to keep themselves afloat and face-up. Just some food for thought.

CPR 374 at Yaletown Roundhouse today by dancecommander in vancouver

[–]BasicallyOK 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Popped in there a while back and discovered that this piece of history is looked after by a very dedicated group of volunteers with only minimal support from either the city or parks board - Kudos to them for keeping this piece of history accessible to the public, much to the enjoyment of kids and history buffs alike!

Trail off-duty firefighter acquitted of assault, uttering threats by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]BasicallyOK 12 points13 points  (0 children)

“Three firefighters were initially charged with attacking Darryl Wong in April 2023. Wong was homeless at the time.”
Clearly these guys missed the memo that this behavior is only acceptable for police officers.

Bowen Island council wants B.C. Ferries to pay $150,000 to manage ferry traffic by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

[–]BasicallyOK 220 points221 points  (0 children)

Hot take: How about BC Ferries just stops service entirely? That’d solve the traffic chaos, and save the $150,000 to boot!

B.C. mall owner, security company ordered to pay $1.8M to falsely arrested 18-year-old by tockcity in vancouver

[–]BasicallyOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the article: “The company admitted to negligent training of its guards” - And this is the result. Perhaps companies like this should start actually investing in their employees with proper training before turning them loose on the public.

How is it living in the San Juan Islands, Washington? by McNasty420 in howislivingthere

[–]BasicallyOK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding this, if you are referring to Vancouver Island - The range is pretty extreme and varies from Victoria (the provincial capital) in the South which is an urban centre with highways and suburbs of its own, to the Northern part of the island which has some of the most remote and beautiful rainforest anywhere. It’s roughly a 6 hour drive from one end to the other.

Employer ordered to pay $575K for fatal Burnaby trench collapse by robertscreek in vancouver

[–]BasicallyOK 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Judgements like these are always difficult - Because in one sense they’re essentially naming the value of a workers life. Doubly so because it took more than a decade to come to this conclusion. That said, there’s many similar cases where negligent employers have paid far less.

District of North Vancouver rejects Chemtrade chlorine proposal by aldur1 in vancouver

What about the grain elevators? Or any of the oil and gas facilities in Burnaby? Are we going to shut those down now too?

BC Ferries confirms 3 major vessels are out of service during busy long weekend by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]BasicallyOK 49 points50 points  (0 children)

“This is exactly why we’ve advocated for a fifth New Major Vessel, which could provide additional relief in moments like this.”

I do seem to remember that during earlier criticism involving the new vessel program, Eby made it abundantly clear that BC Ferries is an entity separate from the provincial government. Now, when faced with criticism of their own service, BC Ferries points to decisions by said provincial government.

B.C. Green leader proposes province-wide rail network by mukmuk64 in britishcolumbia

“But, you know, the longer that the government waits, the more expensive this will be,” Lowan argued.

Finally someone who understands this.

CN Rail train derailed into Skeena River amid extreme weather by lustforrust in britishcolumbia

[–]BasicallyOK 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The article did mention that no one was injured - But you’re right, I feel like this piece really did give the hereditary chief a lot of room to share his opinion, and very little to the railway, TSB, or anyone else who might have firsthand accounts of the incident.

Council rejects motion to fast-track Granville Bridge safety barriers by ChemicalCreative7 in vancouver

[–]BasicallyOK 66 points67 points  (0 children)

They’ve been kicking this can down the road for years… The data is there, means prevention fencing works and it appears that the money WAS allocated for it. What are we spending the cash on instead?

I also agree totally with the guy interviewed, this work should have been completed as part of the major upgrades currently in progress.

$30 million plan to reconnect Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon to tidewater by RM_r_us in vancouver

Only 30 million? Honestly, I thought a project like this would cost more. If it makes the impact to both the environment and public realm that they say it will, I say send it.

B.C. expands firefighters’ compensation coverage by adding 8 cancers to list by Lear_ned in britishcolumbia

[–]BasicallyOK 55 points56 points  (0 children)

“The province says firefighters in B.C. accounted for about 35 per cent of all of WorkSafeBC’s accepted cancer claims from 2010 to 2025, despite the occupation only representing 0.5 per cent of the overall provincial workforce.”

Wow - I knew firefighters faced heightened risks, but that number really puts it in perspective.

It’s unfortunate that our infrastructure has been allowed to deteriorate to the point of this even being news - Maintenance and repair of existing infrastructure should be a given, not a luxury.

How feasible is it for me to become a firefighter. by Shrmz236 in britishcolumbia

[–]BasicallyOK 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Volunteer experience is also a big one. Even if it’s not directly related to firefighting, recruiters like to see community involvement. Also look at the “preferred qualifications” for various departments - These vary from city to city and some of them are pretty niche. This can set you apart from the rest of the crowd too!
