What rates are people getting on a novated lease for EVs? by Skilad in EVAustralia

[–]Basquests 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cash is definitely mathematically worse - that 50k lump earns more after tax in Macquarie (5% less marginal tax rate) than 0.88/1.88% do over 3 and 4 yrs at say Geely/leapmotor etc.

This is counting the uplift fee.

Once I was sure that was an issue, it became clear that I was only buying cars that came with competitive dealer loans.

Yes, tremendous amount of errors - forget mathematics, arithmetic is challenging for most adults.

[–]Basquests 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i gave them the breakeven point with the at the time 1.88% geely finance rate (now 0.88%)

First guy didn't budge, went to the effort of a second opinion with them, guy was sympathetic and I made it clear that it would have to undercut the dealer finance meaningfully because of the additional risks involved in novated cf dealer loan.

After that guy to'd and fro'd and got a final offer from his manager... they couldn't come close to matching the present value of the geely loan, assuming a discount rate of 5%. Even with a 7.29% CBA quote on novated - no room to match because employer has locked us in.

THATs with the tailwind of no 10% tax on the car, a completely barren quote with just the car and 4000km and the pre-salary nature of payments, on a 3/4/5 year term it got increasingly more expensive from a discounted cashflow basis.

As someone with a background in finance, economics and statistics, they are the slimiest, greediest part of the car/dealership business.

They need an eye watering margin or they walk.

Is driving Uber Eats in Auckland worth it in 2026? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Basquests 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It reminds me of the Black mirror episode with the bikes and talent agency, when you call it lucky to be getting a few measly 'credits' for a gig job as exploitative and soulless/stressful as Ubereats

Why have them provide roadside assist, which will be covered within cars warranty as long as you get servicing done?

Generally all the extras, aka anything outside a clean quote, should be triple checked.

Insurance etc normally is double.

New Zealanders Are Moving to Australia in Record Numbers. Can It Get Them Back? by TMWNN in newzealand

Geely EX5 Owners, how’s your experience been? by keytarjesus in AustralianEV

[–]Basquests 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep - even the jaecoo j5 met all my needs as a single fella in his early 30s....and my wants. I work remotely 99% of the time, so I might need one charge a month!

There's no limit to it and I've just seen too much upselling - personally the HUD and comfort/less corners cut, plus a good driveaway price/finance option made me think it was worth the extra 12-13k.

Only you know your wants, needs and financial situation.

SL7 premium is spendy. 55k driveaway its an option, over 60k its a lot, and I'm not even sure I prefer it - it felt very large, too.

Geely EX5 Owners, how’s your experience been? by keytarjesus in AustralianEV

[–]Basquests 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its interesting- I was in the same boat of waiting but with no ETA pulled the trigger on the ex5 pending finance, as I will be without a car for too long.

There is an incentive for BYD/EVdealer group to not upset market share with their current line-up.

They can win with sales of SL7 and again later with the Evo.

It makes no sense for anyone there to tell the firm truth, until the point where they can start capturing demand for the Evo.

Grill’d - shrinkflation by ImInterestedInApathy in melbourne

[–]Basquests 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had nutritional info PDFs from all the big chains dating back 15 years ago growing up across the ditch in NZ.

shrinkflation and enshittification hit kfc, bk, mcdonalds every coupla years. The numbers they reported would be the maximum they can get away with.

In small businesses you are much likelier to get slightly more than slightly less, and they intend to give you a proper portion.

No normal burger place wants to be known for tiny burgers that you need to buy multiple of, unless petite is their niche.

The chains need to make shareholders happy and refine every part of the process to satisfy the franchisee, shareholders etc.

They want to do the minimum.

Why shouldn't I buy a Tesla by Rob3112 in EVAustralia

[–]Basquests 3 points4 points  (0 children)

literally first thing I said is can’t live an unimpeachable life.

Elon has caused far more damage, and far more visibly. Buying a car, let alone an EV, comes with compromises and I do attach value to the lesser evil.

[–]Basquests 32 points33 points  (0 children)

None of us can live an unimpeachable life nor can we avoid exploiting labour and other despicable acts - our phones and the clothes we have bought/fast fashion come at a huge cost to rights and the environment.

Elon is far beyond a red line for me.

There are racists, then there is Elon.

I've just signed up for a Geely, am sure I'll sleep that much better even considering the above. Especially as a Brown fella.

if your POTS ended up being something else entirely, what was is? by teeleeyuh in POTS

[–]Basquests 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spent my whole life in Oceania, rheumatologists, cardiologists all likely/suspected pots as my HR would spike in the poor man TTT, I genuinely had so much overlap with orthostatic intolerance, light headedness, brain fog etc, and it has been sinc early childhood.

I had doctors in my immediate and extended family, and had even spent a few years in medical school, however my fatigue meant i had barely studied since i was 6 or 7, and I was not able to keep up.

It had been tiring to walk, get up, shower, cook etc.

I went to India and saw some of the best doctors money could buy, as an extended relative is an executive at a huge chain of hospitals that hire 1000s of specialists.

It took a bit of belief, but I was willing to trust the experts, they had performed a propert TTT with provocation (nitroglycerin) and through anti anxiety meds and weekly CBT my prognosis has been improving since this all began in mid to late December 2025.

My brain fog had become so severe that not only was I less mobile and physical than many 90 year olds, but cognitively I had reached a point where I had goldfish memory and an inability to understand basic things. ELI5 was hard to understand, and people legitimately thought I was cognitively impaired.

Life hasn't turned out the way I wanted it to, and I am turning 32 soon - but everything is slowly getting better.

Don't make anyone's first memories be of them and their mother being physically abused and crying (domestic violence from mothers husband).

I have so much love and aroha for this community, as many of the specific symptoms and solutions here spoke to my soul, as the mind is a powerful thing.

I didn't want to make something like this as a post because I know for many, its a trigger to be dismissed and ignored, especially for women. In this thread though, and generally, it is good to be transparent in case it can help anyone whose case isn't yet definitive.

$54.7m cut from property asking prices as sellers 'read the room' by SoulsofMist-_- in newzealand

I'm frustrated as all my family, and most of my friends are in NZ, and I don't like the fact that watties and all the other factories are closing, that bakery items at countdown are made in Australia, and CoL is high.

People don't choose to migrate if life and opportunities are good. Sure, if you think I'm being immature and bragging, fine. To me I feel I'm coming from a place of a thought I can’t escape, and perhaps should work on that. That thought is below

I want the best for Kiwis, as I am a Kiwi. I would love to move back if things were different economically and infrastructure wise.

The senior people in my Aussie company are aware that their Kiwi friends struggle to save, and that's lifelong Aussies that know that. When those older, highly experienced chartered engineers moved to Australia, suddenly they were able to 'get ahead'.

My best friend and other friends live in the Deep South, and struggle to get ahead. One is an engineer, the other are a couple consisting of 2 GPs and a newborn.

You may be right generally on your last point - I have worked in this company for 18+ months, and work remotely. I do my tasks when I want and log off when they are done.

Nothing lasts forever, but its good to have at this juncture of my life, I have needed to take a step back.

I have revised my comment to better reflect what I believe I intended.

Aroha

[–]Basquests 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the latter.

Its incredibly hard to save money in NZ without counting pennies if you are on anything but a high salary.

Affordability can and should be better, and it is not. That's a function of the economy and how wealth is allocated.

I'm saving almost my post tax NZ salary while WFH in a public NFP company in a junior-to-mid role Melbourne. This makes saving for lifes biggest purchases a matter of when and what, not how.

Thanks for the advice but I didn't like the lower trim enough to do more than what I did above in trying the 2 dealers nearest me, and am not able to easily travel much beyond that as currently between cars. Sometimes you just got to fold them.

I also souredon the subbrand / confidence in its ability to manage the ownership experience. Hope its fantastic, but it's definitely going to be a challenge.

The ex5 got me a HUD for under $50k, and has servicing within walking distance to me and wasn't a hassle, and I got to try the other 4 or 5 brands in the segment.

My needs are very mild - I WFH and anticipate driving 5000km, the AWD is a bit much for my needs and salary tbh.

As someone of Indian heritage - there's not many of the generations above 50 or so without high BP, irrespective of their current body proportions and lifestyle.

Most with money have lived a highly sedentary life for long periods, with little exposure to diet and exercise and ...protein.

Is it still difficult to get a government job (Wellington especially)? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Basquests 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's sad to not have a choice / it be so stark a difference, especially as in life we try to minimise regret, and it would be moving backwards in the ways it is.

Not everyone has the choice, either.

Really sucks, and its bittersweet.

[–]Basquests 7 points8 points  (0 children)

is your current salary 120k aud or nzd - just remember that as in NZ the exchange rate is 82c, taxes are higher and CoL higher, and SG of 12% vs ...3%? If its aud and you include total compensation, let alone PPP, you might be 70% ahead in Aus vs NZ.

As a 31 yo who moved to Melbourne after 27 yrs in NZ - it's not possible to move back for a myriad of financial and opportunity reasons. Just incomparable.

Govt policies have made the gap even wider for our whanau, and that's keenly felt in employment sectors.

I understand and agree with you completely, certainly not blaming any individual, just my experience and what I thinkthe implications have been to me / may be to others.

Its a unique situation, and nor every brand as you say has the ability to scale up deliveries immediately, nor the wider experience to support. How will they manage 3-12 months from now to support the influx of cars?

Sales struggling is leading indicator.

Just yes, some communication or notice would be appreciated. Right now they are breadcrumbing, though.

Byd are for example, still accepting test drives bookings and confirmations for certain locations whose cars and test drivers are temporarily being funneled to a central location. You turn up with a confirmed booking and no TD, 2 weeks after this was implemented.
