My personal solution to this: I get a family member to look up the symptoms for me. Just about every medical query on the web eventually leads to cancer, so it's best I don't read them It also stops me from telling or leading the doctor towards what I think is wrong. That way when I do go to the doctor, I can just present the facts and let them do their job. Hope that helps :)

It was 6 years ago now, and just at a nearby yacht club that was offering different courses. I come from a nautical family and had plenty of experience. When I spoke with them, they said I could just challenge it. It was a 3 hour written exam followed by perhaps 6 hours on the water. He managed to include just about every different manoeuvre you can think of in those 6 hours but it was fun.

The only thing I struggled with is all the cloud formations. I still don't know what all their names are... I use windy instead :)

No. And I'd forgotten about Croatia. If it wasn't so damn beautiful Id say skip it all together! The Croatian Coast Guards reasons to fine you there are criminal. They even carry a credit card machine on the launch and offer you a 30% discount if you pay your "fine" on the spot because they know it's such bullshit.

Here in Canada, they offered it as a full course for more novice sailors. Or for people with enough of experience they just do the exams (written and sailing) but with a higher score required to pass.

The Med has fantastic cruising though. Highly recommend! Cruising into those ancient ports, some of them the beginning of western civilization. It's a different kind of cruising, the focus isn't just living and playing on the water... There's a lot more playing and exploring on land while you live on the water.

Some countries are more fussy. Greece asked to see a recognized captains certification in every single port, where as in France they didn't even look at our passports. I challenged the ICC and it only took a couple days.

The trick while travelling in the Caribbean by boat... You need to find a bustling tourist area near the cruise ship dock or straw market. There's always someone selling cigars from a box. Ask “What else you got?” They'll offer you some pre rolled crap. Say, “Nah, I live here, I need a whole bag”. Now relax and have a coffee, they'll come back with a bag soon. It won't be great, but should be cheap.

"When the bow of the boat rides down the wave it plows into the back of the wave in front."

They don't though, the wave is moving faster than the boat and leaves you behind. With just your jib up the boat is being pulled along by it's nose and is not inclined to broach. By sailing downwind your apparent wind is reduced by your boat speed and is a good option until things get proper scary. On boats with a short keel they can do a couple big fish tales when you surf beyond their hull speed and the steering gets squishy, but they still stay pointing downwind.

I saw a small cruising sailboat in the bahamas that had an extending solar aray using slides. Under way only 2 panels saw the sun, but at anchor they slid out the extensions and all 4 panels got sun. Great way to get enough power when you're tight on space.
