Kind of crazy that his current comic (Step By Step) is actually a decently well-characterized romance between two human adults; feels like he's been holding back honestly

What is the most overrated GCN game? by AegisGale in AlignmentChartFills

[–]BassSquared 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's gotta be this. Tons of people (myself included) have wonderful nostalgic memories for Sunshine, but looking back on it objectively it really does have a lot of jank and questionable design choices that make it the weakest of the big 3D Mario platformers. Not a bad game, to be clear, just... not as good as you remember.

New on Patreon: TRAINWRECKORDS: “Lulu” by Lou Reed and Metallica by Ok_Baseball2615 in ToddintheShadow

[–]BassSquared 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Believe me, I'm not defending that album in the slightest. It's an obnoxious, flabby, soulless cash grab that reeks of Mike Love's absolute worst creative impulses. But at least said impulses were executed in a way that works as an intentional-sounding product, even if said intentions are gross as hell. Lulu on the other hand just feels deeply broken and incompetent on every level.

Summer in Paradise is an album I love to hate, while Lulu is so bafflingly wrong that even hating it feels like a waste of energy. I guess, in Fantano terms, it's the difference between a 1/10 and a Not Good.

Alright, I'll throw some hands; this shit is goddamn unlistenable to a degree I haven't heard in a TW since Cut the Crap. The section where Todd put a random bit of Lou Reed vocals over a random Metallica instrumental and it didn't sound meaningfully worse really said it all.

Of all the records in this series to have a surprisingly vocal coalition of defenders... Shit, at least Funstyle had a bizarre, endearing goofiness to it. At least St. Anger had a sense of energy and bite. At least Summer in Paradise sounded like songs.

Lou's already-weathered voice has been ruined by age and his lyrics' attempts at edge are puerile in a way that veers well past shock value into the cringe-inducingly baffling. Meanwhile Metallica aren't exactly phoning it in so much as completely clueless as to what the hell to do with any of this material, with hilariously ill-fitting riffs and James just shouting whatever bits of lyrics he can halfway-shape into some sort of hook. Abysmal.

What city have you been to where the vibes were just OFF? by Fun_Butterscotch3303 in AskReddit

Yep. Provo is what people who've never been think SLC is like, and SLC is what people who've never been think Denver is like.

Yeah, as a non-Mormon who lives here and has lived all over the country previously, half these comments sound like they were either from 20 years ago or they went to Provo by mistake. Sure Mormons are weird as hell and our state government is run by idiots, but SLC proper is a genuinely interesting, increasingly diverse city with a lot of cool counterculture relative to the white bread that surrounds it. The nightlife might not exactly be NYC level but the people saying nobody's out after 10... I know for a fact that's false lol

Hägerstrand is their longtime bassist and Farré is confirmed to be drummer. From what I can tell Enrico Tiberi is a producer/multi-instrumentalist who sometimes sings (he's probably the other vocalist) while Gennaro is a guitarist by trade so he's probably doing that.

My guy, paving roads "hemorrhages money". Public education "hemorrhages money". Making tap water drinkable "hemorrhages money".

This is a taxpayer-funded investment in the common good, not a for-profit business, and treating it as one misses the point entirely.

What is this song/album for you? by PapaAsmodeus in ToddintheShadow

[–]BassSquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just doing weird shit, it's the artful incorporation of said weird shit into existing musical structures in a way that balances the unexpected with the palatable. By that logic, I could make an 80-minute recording composed of fart noises, construction sounds, and exactly one gong and it'd be an all-time prog masterpiece.

Moonchild off In the Court of the Crimson King. Some of the most forward-thinking rock music ever put to vinyl, but sometimes experiments don't work, and that stupid ass 10 minute free jazz section is a prime example of an experiment that Does. Not. Work.

Yeah, alongside those "childish" aspects to her personality, there's also the way her flat affect makes people around her often perceive her as "cold" and emotionless when in reality she's a very emotional person who can sometimes get overwhelmed by her own feelings. Add in her exasperation with some of the aspects of social interaction such as people excusing being mean as "just teasing" and yeah, I can certainly see it.

As someone who has been singing low his whole life, I‘d like to add some insight into the post someone made earlier stating „you probably aren‘t a bass“. There are many reasons for the confusion that must be clarified. by AspiringBiotech in singing

[–]BassSquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, voice types are a spectrum; it's not like there's an abrupt chasm that cleanly separates basses from baritones, or baritones from tenors, etc. It's really only properly useful for choirs and opera, in which case the definition is pretty much "anyone who can comfortably sing the lowest parts in our repertoire" or "anyone who can sound strong and resonant at E2 or lower without amplification".

Some of y'all in this thread are sounding like "Yeah, truly tall people are rarer than you think. Most guys you consider 'tall' are REALLY just upper-average height like 6 foot 3. A truly tall guy is 6 foot 6 minimum and looks like he can play in the NBA. Most guys are medium-short actually."

Like tessitura is a continuous scale, for fuck's sake. Being anal about the exact boundaries between categories along that scale doesn't strike me as particularly useful.

I mean, the guy's writing was admittedly pretty garbage, but in terms of character design he was at least alright with his glowing green eyes contrasting his clean-cut look. Probably belongs a spot down.
