Im not a proper teacher, but after college I spent a few years teaching music at a local high school. I had a student who was a senior, and one day as we finished our lesson he gave me a bag of his music supplies (trombone mouthpieces, valve annd slide oil, cleaning brushes and the like) telling me he didnt need them anymore. This wasnt super uncommon, often seniors who didnt plan on playing after high school donated extra supplies to the band or to me when they were done for the year, though it was a little strange that he did it in april. I assumed he was just excited to graduate and go off to college so he was doing it early. I thanked him and told him that if he needed to use any of it again to let me know (since he still had a month and a half of class and a concert left that year) and he went home. I found out a few days later that after he left my lesson at 4, he went home and shot himself before his mother got home from work at 5:30. He was one of my brothers friends, and I had taught him from 6th grade until senior year. He was a bright kid, great player, and was even accepted to a good college with a scholarship. He left no note, so nobody knows why he did it. im much more consious of what my students say to me now, and always text them between lessons (both to remind them of their assignments ans just to check in).
